2015 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

Delfina Smith“My name is Delfina Smith. Most of my experience comes from working in public relations for the Chambers of Commerce in Honduras. I have been married to Luis Smith since 1994 and we have two wonderful daughters, Chelsea Marie, 16, and Michelle Carissa, 12. I came to Gulf Coast Safety Council under the AM/PM staffing company. My first duty was translating their Spanish programs and interpreting for the Spanish-speaking customers. Then the company saw the value of my services and offered me a permanent position in the Computer Lab in June of 2007.”

1) What do you believe makes a good employee? There are a core set of skills that I think are important. Among them are self-discipline, organizational skills, being a good team player, and respect for your bosses, co-workers and customers. Overall, love and pride for what you do, and the satisfaction of accomplishment.

2) As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?Growing up I had no idea of what I wanted to be. My father was worried to see that I had no interest in any particular career. He took me to take an aptitude test and it turns out I had good organizational and social skills in addition to public speaking. So I chose to study journalism. My father and my brother, both named Marel, still dream that one day they will see me conducting a special program on a radio... only God knows.

3) What’s the best part of your job?I am in my element when I am helping people. I feel great teaching them and giving them information that they want or need. At home, I enjoy read-ing about Safety and the Petrochemical Industry. I feel the necessity to be well informed.

4) What’s your favorite time of year at Gulf Coast and why? I enjoy all the of the company events. The Christmas Party gives me an opportunity to spend time with my husband away from the kids. What company nowadays will pay for 2 days in a great hotel, a great company dinner at a fancy restaurant, and give you so many presents?! So, Christ-mas is the best for me. The summer party is also an excellent family event. My girls really enjoy it.

5) What is your favorite thing to do away from work?I love spending quality time with my family. I really enjoy going to the movies and watching movies at home. I enjoy going shopping with my girls. I also like traveling and going to concerts. Cooking is also a favorite hobby of mine.

6) What is your favorite Gulf Coast Safety Council memory?

Off the top of my head, I would say that winning the employee of the year was very special for me! It was nice to be recognized by the company. I was also blown away by the positive reaction of my co-workers.

“Delfina is truly passionate about

her dedicated work ethic and positive “can-do” attitude. I

can always count on her to take on any task with enthusi-

asm, without complaint.”

In February, an updated version of the Basic Orientation Plus® re-ciprocal safety awareness training program was implemented here at Gulf Coast Safety Council and all other ARSC affiliated councils. The newly updated version is now current with the OSHA Code of Federal Regulations.

The new program is interactive and relies more on instructor lec-ture, than the previous version that contained predominantly video content, with little instructor/student interaction. This new version also comes with a Participant Guide (workbook) for each student to use as an aid in their knowledge retention.

Implemented: Monday, February 1, 2016

• The Basic Orientation Plus (08BOP) program has been up-dated to meet the current OSHA regulations and guidelines.

• BOP will now provide trainees with a participation guide.

• Encourage more classroom participation and Instructor in-volvement.

• New videos focus on incidents that have actually happened in real life to illustrate how they could have been prevented.

• A more interactive program will help emphasize a better un-derstanding of the topics covered.

• Study Guide on our website www.mygcsc.com or www.arsc.net

REMINDER!EMPLOYERS MUST POST INJURY AND ILLNESS

SUMMARIES NOW THROUGH APRIL

OSHA reminds employers of their obligation to post a copy of OS-HA's Form 300A, which summarizes job-related injuries and illnesses logged during 2015. The summary must be displayed in a common area where notices to employees are usually posted each year be-tween Feb. 1 and April 30.

Businesses with 10 or fewer employees and those in certain low-haz-ard industries are exempt from OSHA recordkeeping and posting re-quirements. As of Jan. 1, 2015, certain previously exempt industries are now covered. Lists of both exempt and newly covered industries are available on OSHA's website. Visit OSHA's Recordkeeping Rule webpage for more information on recordkeeping requirements.

For more information, visit: https://www.osha.gov/recordkeeping/RKforms.html

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY:“Motorcycles are fun and fuel efficient. That’s not news to anyone who’s ridden one. But neither is the fact that they’re also way more dangerous than a car. The cold reality is that motorcyclists are 30 times more likely to die in a crash than people in a car, ac-cording to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). And nearly half of all motorcycle deaths are the result of single-vehi-cle crashes.”Below are 10 motorcycle safety tips for new riders: 1. Don’t buy more bike than you can handle. 2. Invest in antilock brakes. 3. Hone your skills. 4. Use your head (wear a helmet!) 5. Wear the right gear. 6. Be defensive. 7. Avoid bad weather. 8. Watch for road hazards. 9. Check lights, horn, etc. before leaving. 10. Regularly inspect tires.

4. Allow employees to feel comfortable when they observe a fire extinguisher hanging on the wall near them

5. Allow employees to possibly save a life and/or destruction to property

6. Allow employees to possibly protect their family and homes from large fires – because WHAT STARTS LARGE FIRES? SMALL FIRES!

OSHA Standard

BullsEye Features:

CleanThe BullsEye extinguisher uses a conical laser to replicate discharge rather than depending on a dry-chemical or CO2 extinguisher.

Cost EffectiveIn many cases, we (GCSC) can save more than the cost of a train-ing system in the first year alone. Laser-driven training extinguishers plus reduced set-up and clean-up times means we can train more people in less time.

SafeRelies on LED driven digital flames and a laser extinguisher for a completely safe training experience.

RealisticBullsEye extinguishers have sound effects, a timed discharge and are weighted accordingly (5, 10 or 20 lb.) to closely simulate dry-chemi-cal or CO2 extinguishers.

Schedule today by calling 504.469.7787

BullsEye Advantages:

1. Safely train to OSHA requirements

2. Allows training to take place entirely indoors, in the actual work environment

3. Allows instructor to monitor/observe each student. Coach Im-provement and proficiency during exercise

4. Allows student to ask questions and learn

5. Allows student to feel comfortable at work/home

6. Allows student to feel safe from fire related injury
