Street Names in Horace, Kansas by Cecile Shepherd The first town of Horace, Kansas was located south of highway 96 in Sec. 36- 18-41. In this location the east to west streets were named avenues, numbers Six through Twelve. The north to south streets were named Sharon, Seward, Greeley, Main, Horace, Chase, and Stanton streets. Due to the anticipation of a railroad through Greeley County, Horace was moved north of highway 96 and platted in August, 1886 in its current location in NE ¼ of 24-18-41 and NW ¼ of 19-18-40. Later a Hughes addition and a Lake addition were added on the north side of Horace. In September, 1887, after the railroad came through Greeley County, an addition to Horace known as the Railroad Addition was added on the west and south sides of Horace. Horace, Kansas was incorporated on October 3, 1887 by the Board of County Commissioners of Hamilton County in Syracuse, Kansas. Horace had over 250 inhabitants at that time. The original map of the current Horace, Kansas, blocks 1 through 32, shows the following east to west street names: Kansas Ave., Michigan Ave., Ohio Ave., and Indiana Ave., obviously named after other states. The north to south streets were originally named First, Second, Third, Main, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth streets. When the Railroad Addition was added to Horace, the avenues of Montana, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Delaware, and Pennsylvania were added to the east to west streets on the west side of Horace, and the names of Olive, Pine, Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Streets were added to the north to south streets on the east side of Horace. Streets in Horace remained the same until the implementation of the E9- 1-1 emergency system for Greeley County. A basic E9-1-1 emergency system went live in Greeley County on January 11, 1990, and an enhanced E9-1-1 system was implemented in 2007. Before the implementation of E9-1- 1 systems addresses were assigned by the telephone companies and the location information came from whatever information was assigned to the telephone number. Addressing was moved from the duty of the telephone companies to the duty of the PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) in each county, which covers 9-1-1 emergency call taking for each area. Greeley County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch is the PSAP for Greeley County, and is thus in charge of assigning new addresses and managing the changeover from the telephone company. The new address system for E9-1-1 caused the need to change the street names in Horace, as there could not be duplicated street names in Horace and Tribune. First street was renamed Russell Street in honor of Ed Russell, Horace mayor for many years; Second Street was renamed Louise Street in honor of Louise Russell Jacobus, a lifetime avid supporter of Horace; Third Street was renamed Francis Street in honor of Francis Graham, Horace city clerk for many years. Main Street did not have to be renamed, as Tribune has a Broadway Street in place of Main Street. Fourth street was renamed Landis Street after the Landis family, early owners of the Pacific House Hotel on Main Street along with a mechanic garage where Ezra Landis sold Maxwell cars and Overlands. Fifth Street became Roundhouse Street, named after the Horace roundhouse. Sixth street became MoPac Street, named after the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company, and Seventh Street became Rock Island Street, named after the Rock Island Railroad Company. Store Hours: M-F 7:30 - 5:00 Sat. 7:30 - noon, Closed Sundays WE’RE NOT JUST LOCAL, WE’RE MOBILE. ®*
