Dear Fellow Members,

Happy New Year!

It is my honor and privilege to serve as your president this year. While it is incredibly difficult to follow Garson Rice, I will do my best to provide a seamless transition in the work that was initiated under his very strong leadership. As president, it is particularly important to me that all efforts on the part of the Board are transparent to the entire membership. We represent you, and our work is centered on bringing tremendous value with a “Best in Class” experience to our members. Think of your Board as a bridge between member-ship and management, and please feel free to share with me YOUR vision for how we can make Greensboro Country Club more appealing to you and your family, as well as the best Club in the state.

In our personal lives, this is the time of year when many of us reflect on where we have been and contemplate where we would like to go. Your Board is engaged in this same process. We spent significant time last year digesting the results of the 2013 member survey to ensure we have a clear understanding of the overall satisfaction of our members in all venues of our Club. While there are always areas that we can improve, our survey showed that overall, 90% of the respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with the Club. This level of satisfaction response was 9% higher than the average rating of Clubs that conduct similar surveys.

With reflection also comes preparation. In 2015, we will build on the strengths of our past and lay the groundwork for our future.

Our architects are hard at work developing long-range plans for the Irving Park Clubhouse and Golf Course. We look forward to holding town hall meetings or small group forums later this year so that our entire membership can provide input and help shape these plans. Once we’ve received input from members, our architects will present final recommendations, which the Board will bring back to the member-ship for approval.

New and exciting events are always happening at our Club, thanks in large part to the leadership of Steve Matlaga, the senior staff and our volunteer committees. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the chairs of each of our committees, as well as all of the members of our Club who serve on them. We value every member’s perspective and want to encourage you to become involved in any committee that is of interest to you.

I am always available and willing to answer questions or to hear your comments and concerns. You can reach me during the day on my cell phone (336) 209-4245 or in the evening at home (336) 275-8124. I will always get back to you in a timely manner.

I look forward to serving on your behalf and I wish each of you a happy, healthy 2015.

Message from the Membership Committee Chairman

I want to thank all the members who supported the Club last year by sponsoring or endorsing new applicants. We accepted 50 new and returning members in 2014, and these strong gains helped us balance more than 65 resignations from the Club.

For 2015, the Board of Directors approved an increase in the initiation fee from $25,000 to $30,000. The increase will be effective on May 1st, and it reflects the greater value the Club offers members as a result of millions of dollars of investments in recent years without any assessments. Future members will have the benefit of these and other improvements, and a higher initiation fee will help us continue to make capital investments in our Club and maintain a strong financial footing.

In the next few weeks, take time to reach out to individuals who will appreciate, enjoy and value all that our Club has to offer. Invite them to come over to the Club as your guest, let us know by contacting our Membership Director, Brittany Mitchell, and we will provide them with an information packet. Please also take the time to thank the individuals who volunteer their service on various committees at the Club, including the Membership Committee. In addition to bringing in new members and vetting every applicant, the Membership Committee helped update a number of Club rules and regulations in 2014.

For example, a small but important change was made to our Club’s Guest Visitation policy to enhance and protect the value of your membership. Members are encouraged to utilize the Club with their friends and business associates, and non-members may come as accompanied guests up to 12 days a year (three times a quarter). Guests who wish to use the Club more often are encouraged to explore membership in our Club. The complete Guest Visitation policy can be found online in our Rules & Regulations.

Please let me, the Membership Committee or Brittany Mitchell - (336) 275-8506 or [email protected] - answer any questions you may have or showcase the Club to a prospective member. I look forward to another successful year.

Happy New Year! What’s your New Year's resolution?

If you’re at all like me, you perhaps reflect a moment on the past year or more as the “Times Square Ball” drops, ringing in another joyous New Year full of opportunity and hope. I smile thinking back on 2014 and I am energized by the accomplishments of our GCC team. Working in concert with our Board and Committees we achieved new participation milestones, successfully opened new venues and offered many new fun and innovative events. I’m pleased to say that I believe we created a “best in class” experience in many ways and spread “Big Happy” around in abundance. I am confident that our team will continue to innovate and challenge the status quo to bring forward a menu of even more engaging events in our sports departments as well as our social calendar. Great examples of what’s in store for 2015 are the "Dueling Piano & Dueling Bartender Night” on January 30th and our first Super Bowl Tailgate Party and Chili Cook-Off on February 1st.

As we focus to deliver positive experiences and create a fun environment for you and your guests, it is key to us that you always partner with us to generate ideas and provide feedback on our events. Some of the best suggestions come from you and we will always listen. The senior management team and I are deep into finalizing our 2015 objectives which are focused around Member-ship, Operations and creating positive experiences each time you visit GCC. In Membership the Club had the best New Member Recruiting year (50 new and returning members) in five years. While this is very positive we remain laser focused on how to minimize resignations and have a positive net member growth year in 2015. Please help us by engaging a member of the Member-

ship Committee if you have a prospect or have thoughts on how to retain existing members. The team and I will support all recruiting and retention efforts in every department of the Club.

I am reminded every day that it takes a team to prog-ress and to achieve lasting success. We have had great leadership this past year and thank you so very much to Garson Rice and to the Board for their unwavering support. We are also appreciative for all the Committees who contributed so much. Ideas are easy but it takes a team to deliver reality. I am fortunate to have a great GCC team and we appreciate your participation and loyalty to GCC. Each of you as Members are on the team, so please communicate your wishes and desires to us and we will do our best to make you proud of your Club. We try hard every day to meet expectations and anticipate needs and always take feedback in a positive way. In 2014 we made great strides in our communica-tion methods to you. Please take a moment to update all your contact information on the website so we can reach you in the format you want. One of our 2015 goals is to double the amount of Members following us on Face-book and Instagram, so please take a second to look us up and "Like" our Facebook page. This will keep you “up to speed” on all things GCC.

So about that resolution… we promise to deliver fun and memorable experiences throughout the year for you and your families in creative new ways to ensure that you enjoy your Club more than ever in 2015. Wishing a happy and healthy New Year to everyone! Steve Matlaga, CCMGeneral Manager/CEO

From the Chef

Happy New Year from Your Culinary Team!

I would like to thank everyone for a wonderful 2014! We have reflected on the accomplishments around the

Club over this past year, specifically in the culinary depart-ment, and we are very proud of our progress. In addition, as the Executive Chef I am always looking at what we can do to continually elevate our products and services. We have made some great gains in many areas this year, growing members of our team through cross-training. We had a fantastic year in the Donald Ross Terrace with the addition of two new culinarians and our seasoned Chef Alex Pierce. We continue to develop the Family Grille/1909 under Billy Cain. Jeff Seagraves has gained a lot of momentum for us at the Farm with increased numbers on Thursday Night Buffets, Sunday Brunches and special parties. We have also made progress in our banquet operations the year with Mike Volinski’s guidance.

In November, Melissa Clark and I spent a week in Houston, TX at a Food & Beverage Conference where we spent time on topics such as sanitation, business law, facility planning, what’s hot for 2015 and what’s not. We were in a group of 50 club chefs, managers and general managers. We met so many people from different clubs around the country, and had fantastic discussions about the club industry. We visited two of the top-10 clubs in Houston - the River Walk Country Club and Houston Country Club. These types of educational opportunities keep your staff fresh and creative, and we came back with many great event ideas…just wait and see!

We are growing our pastry program with the help of pastry chef Ben Shelton. Ben is the pastry instructor of the Culinard Culinary School here in Greensboro. Ben was responsible for our lovely chocolate display "Santa's First Stop" in the foyer this holiday season. It was approximately 50 pounds of solid chocolate! This chocolate creation will be melted down to create a new sculpture in the near future.

Ben and my wife Laurie were instrumental in the execution of our Holiday Bazaar goodies. There were barely any confections left over, and a lot of people are going to have a happy and delicious start to their new year. A huge "thank you" to all of the dedicated team members that spent hours tying bows, and making tags, labels and cards. There was a lot of tedious work to do, and everyone had incredible patience making the treats look beautiful and festive…Bravo! With the success of the Holiday Bazaar we will be offering handmade chocolates and confections for sale for Valen-tine's Day. Be on the lookout for more information soon.

Plans for the 2015 season are well under way. The team has come together to brainstorm new and exciting events for all ages, and we will get "save the dates" to you soon. John Centore has an exceptional line up of leaders in the wine industry - some small and some big - to continue our fine tradition of food and wine pairing events. We look forward to offering new "grab and go" options at our Fitness Center that will feature fresh fruit, bottled juices and smoothies early in 2015.

Let’s have a great 2015 together!

Tennis UpdateAs we move forward to 2015, we will take the success of 2014 and build on it with more events and activities. We will offer events for adults and juniors that will be fun and com-petitive. We are looking forward to an exciting year of events and activities that will give our members many opportunities to be part of the Tennis Program.

It is important as you get ready for spring tennis that you stay fit during the winter. A weekly fitness program with 30 minutes of cardio four times-a-week will keep you in shape.

It is also important to hit tennis balls at least two times-a-week to keep up your game in tune, either with a weekly tennis lesson or weekly tennis games. This can definitely have you more prepared for competitive tennis as you move into the outdoor season.

Don’t hesitate to let our Tennis professional staff help you with your winter exercise program. Stay fit this winter!

Greetings,

Welcome to the New Year! Our golf staff are really glad the last two years are behind us with record rainfall in 2013 and lingering winter weather in 2014. For both our membership play was down

from our norm affecting the revenue for the Club in food and beverage, golf and our golf operations. We know this year will bring us good news with you, our members, playing more golf and being involved in more events. The more you play, the better your Club can be.

As you have observed, each year we strive for more fun for the golfers in your family to enjoy. Adding new activities and tweaking the present ones, it is our pleasure to see our members enjoy their time at the Club. Last year, we introduced the PGA Junior League for our girl and boy junior golfers. It was so successful, we fielded two teams to compete against other teams with a chance to be in a national-scale event. For mixed golf, the Night Golf was so popular, additional nights were requested. Our ladies were formidable in their many events with the Fore Fun Monday group growing, the regular Tuesday play days and major events continuing to be well supported. The Sunday “Nine and Dine” events were highlights to end week-ends on a positive note, and more have been added to the schedule for this year. The Men’s Player of the Year award to the winner of the year-end shootout was a highlight to the end of the season.

Watch for new events on the 2015 calendar. Intro-duced this year will be a Men’s Conference Champi-onship in a GCC League competition. Teams will be made of members competing against other teams in our Club during the summer in 9-hole matches. The season winner then will advance to League Play-off

with another team champion from another area club. In addition, for the first time we will have an Adult-Ju-nior team event where juniors will play with an adult from the Club who is not a family relation. For the nostalgic history buffs, we will have a unique Hickory Club Championship, a 9-hole event where all players will use hickory shafted clubs like the antique clubs often seen. GCC is blessed with the fine members who are a part of our Club. With the continued support by members playing, bringing guests, sponsoring new members and participating in events, our Club will have a 2015 prosperous year.

Tournament ResultsChairman’s Cup Title Won by Fisher/Kirkman and Andrew/Yates

The last event of the Men’s Golf Calendar for 2014, the Chairman’s Cup, had some spectacular golf played at the Farm. Chairman Kevin Green handled the first tee jitters starting with a birdie 3 on the first and easy par on the second. But bogeys on the next five holes in a row and a lone par on the 8th produced a front nine forty with only two handicap strokes for net scoring. The second nine was redemption with a birdie on the tenth and three successive birdies on holes 16, 17 and 18. The whole field sighed a relief.

Jim Fisher and John Kirkman won low gross with fine 9 under par 63. Aided by three birdies from Kevin Green, the pair were one shot victors over David Egerton and Ryan Gioffre.

For first place net, three teams tied at 61: Jim Belcher/Patrick Theissman, John Andrew/Mark Yates and Glenn Davis/Mikael Svensson. A playoff was conducted for the names on the trophy. After the other two teams secured a par, Mark Yates made a solid birdie from ten feet for the team victory. With the assist from the Chairman’s score, the Andrew/Yates team sizzled the back nine with a seven under par 28 that had no pars. A single bogey counted on the 12th and the remaining holes were all birdies for the team low ball.

A big “thank you” to Kevin Green for his hard work and effort as Golf Committee Chairman. Kevin served as a committee member under John Kirkman’s Chairmanship and subsequently served as the Chairman for the last two years. In that time, he introduced the Men’s Four-Ball Match Play, an event that has filled up both of the first two years and co-authored the Annual Pro-Am with John Kirkman that has been so popular and successful. His time and creative contributions have had a positive effect on our golf program.

Next year’s chairman has been appointed. Cabell Poindexter will be taking the helm for 2015 for the Golf Committee. Cabell will continue the assignment of promoting member activity with the assistance of his committee. Any suggestions for ways and means to increase new member growth, golf play on our fine courses and tournament participation will be welcomed by our new chairman and his committee for inclusion in their plans for the upcoming year.

Jingle Bell Tournament December 9, 2014

LGA NewsMost Improved AwardsDeb Staton received the “Most Improved Player Award” at the Annual LGA Jingle Bell Brunch in December with improvement in handicap by six strokes over the April to November season. Sonya Marino was also congratulated for reducing her handicap by 4 strokes over the season. Dr. Carol Boles regular attendance on Tuesday’s play days helped improve her game and lower by 3 strokes. Retirement is agreeing with Candace Cummings, who continued to improve and lowered her handicap by another two strokes this year. Well done ladies!

Ringer Book Winners The Ringer Book is a record of rounds of golf played by our ladies which represents the best score on each hole over the whole season. It is a fun way to see how great you could score if you played your best on every hole. This year we had a tie with a score of 78 at Irving Park by Becky Campbell and Carol Boles. Becky also prevailed at the Farm with a one over par 73.

Year in ReviewAs is customary for this time of the year, I ask each of the two course Superintendents to give a brief review of their experiences throughout the year. These gentlemen are respon-sible for overseeing the majority of hard work that is accomplished each and every year by a very talented

team that make up the whole of your golf course mainte-nance department. It is difficult to express in words the true extent of their hard work, dedication and accomplish-ments, so I will sum it up in a short message, “Thanks to the both of you for all you do to make the two courses their best each and every day!” One last thing while I am being warm and fuzzy. Each year the members contribute to the annual Christmas fund for the entire staff, and I want to express my staff’s gratitude for this membership’s generosity. Speaking for all of my staff, the year-end holiday bonus means a lot to each and every employee and really does make a difference during this special time of the year. So a big thank you goes out to everyone for their support of this heartfelt program.

Wesley Proctor - Irving Park Course SuperintendentWe faced a number of challenges at Irving Park in 2014. We applied an herbicide to the bent grass collars in order to clean up and prevent weed encroachment around the perimeter of the greens. Unfortunately, the herbicide didn’t perform as it was labeled. It moved from the application site into the bent grass perimeter and ultimately caused a portion of the bent grass to die. Once we were confident that no additional damage would present itself we began the necessary repairs. Fortunately, the Club was reimbursed for the cost of labor and materials to complete the repairs. But regardless of the reimbursement, it is an occurrence I hope we never have to go through again.

As spring arrived, the temperatures remained moderate and the Bermuda grass was very slow to grow. This, coupled with a high demand for sod this year, led to some difficulty locating acceptable Bermuda as well Zoysia sod. When the sod reached an acceptable quality, we began necessary re-pairs and some improvements to the course. The most no-table improvements included the change in turf species to the 1st tee area and the 7th tee. We replaced nearly 10,000 square feet sod with most going to the 7th tee area. The decision to change from Bermuda grass to Zoysia grass

is directly related to the lack of sunlight in both of these areas. During the long history here at Irving Park, the trees have grown not only in size but in number. Although this adds an aesthetically pleasing quality to the course, it also creates some difficulty growing turf in the shady areas. With 2014 coming to a close, we began to think of what challenges 2015 will bring and plan to meet them with the same determination to give the GCC membership the best golf conditions possible. I also want to thank the Club managers and membership for the opportunity that our department is given to serve as your golf course mainte-nance staff at Irving Park.

Brooks Turner – Farm Course SuperintendentWorrying and some sleepless nights is how the year started for us. The cold temperatures that we endured this past winter definitely posed concern for the health of warm season grasses. On one of those days that the lows that night were going to be in the single digits, I recall a member asking me, “Don’t you think those guys with Bermuda grass greens are worried right now?” I replied, “At least they have covers, I am worried about our fairways and roughs.” We studied the historical weather data for the years we encountered substantial winterkill, and it did not look promising. To our delight, the amount of moisture that we received over this same time period proved to be our saving grace. We did not encounter large areas of winterkill, and lucky for me the additional gray hairs caused by all that worrying are not noticeable!

The temperatures during the summer months proved to be less worrisome. The somewhat cooler weather pattern over the last two summers has allowed us to be a little less cautious in regard to raising mowing heights on the putting greens. However, the triad area was only two days short of having the average number of 90-degree days for the year! It would be nice if we can keep these somewhat “cooler” summers for a long time!

All in all, the year very was very good and we accomplished a lot more than I have writing space to communicate. Looking forward to 2015, it is our goal to continue with our drainage improvements, landscape improvements and provide the best playing conditions possible. We are also very excited to be hosting the CGA’s Carolinas Amateur next July!
