Welcome to the construction industry.

We live in a region which is pushing the boundaries of what is expected and what

is possible in the construction industry.

The world is looking to the Gulf to attempt the impossible, and

everyday a new project is completed that demonstrates state-of-the-

art engineering and design.

While projects such as the Burj Khalifa and the Kingdom Tower gain

widespread acclaim and attention, it should be noted that they would

never be possible without a line-up of some of the world’s leading and most progressive consultants, contractors,

suppliers and support companies.

The GCC Construction Book is a celebration of the very best companies in their respective fields of expertise. A

future is being forged in the GCC and as the region continues to raise standards

and set new records, these are the people that will be crucial in ensuring

that dreams of the developers, architects and the people become a reality.

further developments of the traditional product lines are still at the forefront; however, the trend towards more comfortable bathrooms places new demands on sanitary technology.

In accordance with changing customer demands, the aesthetics and attractiveness of the products is playing an increasingly important role. Design innovations have become more important, along with technical innovations, and have become an important cornerstone

of product development. Geberit is increasingly also offering

products that make a convincing statement about comfort and design in front of a wall. But it’s not just about product design and style, with the company also investing in adapting products to the requirements of the strongly growing markets in Asia.

The group is reacting to the great potentials of these markets with regional-specific solutions as well as a presence with local added value. Many

projects are realised in cooperation between local competence centres and the headquarters in Switzerland.

Geberit is investing in the energy-efficient infrastructure of tomorrow with appropriate planning in its new buildings.

For Geberit, a clear commitment to innovation is indispensable. To that end, the company continues to invest significant resources in new and advanced development of products and technologies.

Kamstrup began operations in the Middle East in 2005, since then it has grown from relatively humble beginnings in Knowledge Village to one of the major players for BTU metering in the Middle East, with offices in DIC12.

Having established a stronghold in the western and northern European markets, as well as a significant presence in the Far East, Kamstrup has expanded its Middle Eastern reach from Lebanon to Oman. In the region, the Danish firm has performed the best in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

With the expertise of the mother-company available to it, Kamstrup has been able to work with distributors in each market while keeping local staff on limited to core activities such as technical knowledge and

local commercial help. Furthermore, with extensive knowledge of the metering field within its onsite personnel, the company can solve most regional technical queries.

Should the need for more dedicated technical expertise, Jarmo Heikkinen, general manager of Kamstrup’s Middle Eastern offices, says that the Dubai office can utilise factory personnel at headquarters through inventive use of modern technology, such as taking over customer’s servers for needed updates and clean-ups.

Over the last 12 months, the company has moved into water metering with its new smart ultrasonic water meter product range including wireless data collection. In addition, Kamstrup inaugurated a new 5,000m2

factory for the new water meter.“We are taking our initial steps in

the field of water metering,” says Heikkinen, adding that all of Kamstrup’s products are “highly related to energy and water conservation, making them very environmental products, indeed”.

With the market for individual metering still developing in the Middle East, Kamstrup are looking at Abu Dhabi

and Dubai to lead the way in energy conservation, with Saudi Arabia and Qatar following behind, Heikkinen says.

“Kamstrup is spreading the word of the importance of individual metering as basis of energy and water conservation. Without measuring you cannot manage! Only metering before and after conservation efforts will high-light the achieved savings,” he says.

Kamstrup branched out into water metering in 2012 with it predicting that static ultra sonic meters will takeover from traditional technology.

Kamstrup is a pioneer in introducing ultra sonic technology into BTU metering.

It has opened a new 3,000m2 office for high skilled engineers and developers in Denmark.

Kamstrup serves over 60 countries and is growing – with new offices in India, South Africa and the USA.

Established in 2010, Green Building Solutions International is one of the few companies operating in the GCC and MENA region that focuses on the performance of the building envelope.

The air tightness of a building enclosure (or envelope) is a significant factor in the overall energy consumption of buildings and homes.

The energy required to comfortably cool and maintain a stable range of humidity in buildings increases dramatically if there is uncontrolled air transfer through the building’s exterior fabric.

‘Leaky’ buildings are vulnerable to moisture infiltration, deterioration of building materials, poor indoor temperature and humidity control.

Set up and operated by William

Whistler, the company has quickly established itself as a ‘go-to consultant’ for developers looking to increase the efficiency and sustainability of their building projects.

“We’ve set our standards high. I want GBSI to be known as a GCC based company that does high quality work. Quite often, buildings here are built in a rushed atmosphere, but achieving air tightness isn’t about rushing around in the last two weeks with a caulking gun. It is really a mindset throughout the building process from design through construction. The building envelope is a system, with a function just as critical as the air-conditioning system, the plumbing system and so on. All the parts of the system have to work together to perform properly.

The building envelope system includes all elements of the building ‘skin’ – windows, exterior surface cladding, connecting details, service penetrations and shafts, entrances and exits, roof elements and floor surfaces.

With the region adopting green building technologies, the market has been extremely receptive to Green Building Solutions International.

“We’ve been very fortunate that calls for building envelope and related testing are coming in to GBSI at a rapid

pace. We are currently performing the required Estidama testing for five Emirati housing projects. We are also testing ten buildings at Masdar, including the Seimens regional headquarters and have recently completed testing on the innovative Al Bahar buildings.”

“The Siemens building is being built to LEED Platinum and Five Pearl Estidama requirements. Fortunately, the project head realized early in the planning of the building that it would be important to have a building

envelope specialist on board to work with the project team. At GBSI we take responsibility for the client’s building envelope performance from the moment we accept the job. The responsibility begins with signing off shop drawings, inspecting during the construction process and working with clients and their team to ensure that when the building is tested the performance levels required in the specifications are met according to international standards.

The air tightness of a building enclosure (or envelope) is a significant factor in the overall energy consumption of our buildings and homes.

The energy required to comfortably cool and maintain a stable range of humidity in buildings increases dramatically if there is uncontrolled air transfer through the building’s exterior fabric.

Energy usage here in the GCC is typically 60 to 70 percent of domestic electrical consumption. The greatest use of energy in the GCC is for mechanically cooled and humidified air –air conditioning. The building ‘skin’ must protect our interiors from the infiltration of the sun’s heat and hot desert air.

GbSi was selected as sustainability specialist and air tightness consultant to test building envelope air tightness at Masdar MiST ib, the al bahar buildings, Seimans regional headquarters and has conducted hundreds of air tightness tests in the uae.

Jointly owned by the governments of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Ducab is one of the most modern manufacturing units in the region, producing over 105,000 copper tonnes equivalent of cables and wires a year with state-of-the-art technology, while keeping ahead of the relentless progress demanded by local markets. Inaugurated in Jebel Ali in November 1979, Ducab is one of the longest established brands in the UAE and one of the leading providers of copper products geared towards power infrastructure. Ducab operates three cable manufacturing sites in the UAE, producing low voltage, medium and high voltage cables and specialist wires for all applications catering to utilities, oil & gas projects and the major infrastructure programs under way with a 33-55% UAE market share, depending upon the cable segment, future growth aims to secure a 15-20% market share across the GCC – products are currently sold in over 40 countries worldwide. “We have strong supportive shareholders willing to back the vision of building a world class manufacturing business based on

quality and excellence,” asserts Colin McKay, GM sales and marketing, Ducab. “Our customers and stakeholders like different things about Ducab; for some, it is the fact that we are a 100% UAE company, for others it is the fierce brand loyalty that the Ducab name has built up amongst customers and employees alike. For still others, it is the reputation for quality without compromise that sets Ducab apart from the rest,” he continues. Affirming corporate responsibility, in 1997 Ducab became the first cable manufacturer to have the Environmental Management System certified by BASEC to ISO 14001. It was in 2005 that Ducab

expanded to Abu Dhabi, opening its first facility that was closely followed by a second, required to meet the growing market demand. In 2008 the third cable manufacturing plant was inaugurated as was the first UAE based copper casting plant. “The market demand for different products depends very highly on the new projects and the path of which these projects are going on. For example, ever since the announcement of the Metros and Railway products in the UAE, Ducab has introduced products that would fit that industry, hence why Ducab specialist cables & wires were used in the Dubai Metro Projects,” McKay adds.

As standards have escalated for project and fiscal efficiency in the industry, Construction Computer Software (CCS) has developed programs to support the growing requirements.

Supplying the versatile and powerful cost control systems, BuildSmart and CCS Candy, the software has not only set a standard but become one in its own right, with 800 contractors utilising the digital tools across 50 countries.

“From Construction Computer Software’s humble beginnings, our direction has always been to service the construction industry needs with technology, rather than produce a generic software package,” explains general manager Ian Hauptfleisch.

“In other words the company emphasis is on people and their tasks-at-hand, not technology for its own sake,” he adds.

Originating in South Africa, Candy Estimation and Project Control software was first developed in 1978 and introduced to the Middle East by South African and British companies operating here in the 1990s. Then supported by remote offices in the UK and South Africa, CCS established

its dedicated Middle East base in 2003 with offices in Dubai and distributors in Bahrain and Lebanon.

Already represented internationally, a further distribution base is currently being set up in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia.

CCS employs 100 staff in South Africa, with more than 70 working on the development of new products, and around 20 working regionally, including distributors catering for CCS admin, sales, implementations, training and support services in the Middle East.

“First and foremost, CCS products are designed and developed from the bottom up for the construction

industry and professionals by construction industry professionals,” Hauptfleisch begins, saying the highest adoption rates in the region are seen in UAE, with the strongest growth in Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Combined, modules incorporated in CCS Candy and BuildSmart include estimating, planning, valuations, forecasting, cash flow, procurement, accounting, wages, plant, yard and stock management and document control. While each may be available from individual suppliers, CCS offers interconnectedness between each module. CONTACT

The GCC’s building and construction industry currently consumes up to 400,000 tonnes of aluminium annually, making it one of the biggest markets for aluminium products in the region.

In particular, construction projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait have been key growth markets that are driving the surge in demand for aluminium.

Aluminium has a significant influence on the building and construction sector in these countries and in the rest of the GCC because of the diversity of ways of processing aluminium and its excellent properties that unlock a virtually unlimited potential for creativity and innovation in the design of projects.

The UAE has 36% worth of $958 billion of total construction projects in the region and is expected to see its construction industry grow by a compound annual growth rate of 9.6% between 2011 and 2015. Qatar has 15% share and the country has the biggest growth potential as its CAGR from 2011 to 2015 is estimated to reach 12%.

Developer of the most exciting architectural products around the globe, Trimo operates in roofing, cladding and façades, innovating the technology used in the sector to enhance the sustainability of the built environment.

Following a collaboration with London-based sustainability consultancy dcarbon8, Trimo product Qbiss One had its entire carbon footprint measured, from raw material to final product, allowing Trimo to off-set and continuously reduce the CO2 consumed and ensure Qbiss One can be considered and offered as a truly green product, offering sustainability and architectural freedom.

As a result of the collaboration with dcarbon8, Qbiss One won Planet Positive accreditation. Qbiss One is a five in one systematic approach to construction, presenting a total building

solution comprising a modular façade element, sealing and fixing components, flashings and corner details.

Its unique ‘true’ rounded corner is enhanced further with its ‘shadow’. Recessed joints offer an aesthetic appeal to designers and architects that genuinely expands the limits of the design envelope.

Complementing Qbiss is Trimo’s design-led service ArtMe, which allows the designer to create any pattern or logo on the external face of the façade.

In 2010 ArtMe became the first product from the field of fireproofed roofs and façades to win a coveted Red Dot Design Award. 2012 saw the release of Qbiss Air, a revolutionary and contemporary, energy-efficient façade system that maximises a building’s internal space within the same exterior volume. `Using a carbon dioxide-filled

insulating core, Qbiss Air will re-write the rules for thermal efficiency.

Striving to provide that highest levels of customer service and communication, Trimo’s Middle East base opened last year to provide dedicated sales and support to valued regional customers following a number of prestigious contract wins.

Still part of Trimo UK, it is one of three markets that Trimo names as its strongest, along with the UK and Central Europe.

“The Middle East has always been a strong trading partner and with the number of construction projects increasing in the region year-on-year yet with sustainability central to most projects, it was a perfect fit for Trimo’,” Kinsey says.

Trimo façades have captured the

attention of some of the biggest names in global architecture, including Foster+Partners, whose projects include Qatar’s Lusail and Abu Dhabi’s Central Market and Masdar Institute.

Working together, Trimo and Foster+Partner completed the McLaren Production Centre, in the UK, which will house production of the MP4-12C high performance super car.

Using Qbiss throughout, the Foster + Partner designed project combines both functionality and aesthetics.

Trimo has also supplied Qbiss to the new terminals currently being built at Heathrow Airport.

Qbiss One and Qbiss Air are just two of the many products that have emerged from Trimo’s innovation and creativity – visions that run throughout the company, underpinning its success.

leading manufacturer of high-end laminates flooring in Europe and United States. The variety and durability of high-end laminated flooring of Kronotex gives Greenwood customers the best option for their chosen designs and requirements.

Kronotex laminates are innovative products of incrementally refined materials. The best of natural wood is its basic component; its classic quality is

visible in every single panel. Laminate holds up brilliantly in comparison to traditional parquet flooring: no matter what form or decoration, its realistic wood appearance is almost more beautiful and lifelike, more dazzling than parquet. But Kronotex laminate floors offer further advantages over traditional wood flooring. They are harder, easier to handle and care for, more versatile,

have a higher load capacity, and are available in greater variety.

The adhesive-free Express Click System installation system is simple and fool- proof enough for anyone to manage; no toolbox necessary.

Express Click System panels can be installed upon all dry and even sub floors and suitable underlay. If needed, they can be removed, reinstalled, and reused without harm or damage.

Byrne was founded in the U.A.E in the early 1990s. The early motivation for Byrne’s entry into the rental business stemmed from market interest in a small fleet of basic plant and equipment, and the emergence of some aggressive growth in the marine repair, and oil and gas industries.

In 2007, a HSBC Private Equity vehicle, Byrne Investments Limited, acquired Byrne Equipment Rental businesses in the UAE, Qatar and KSA to work alongside another HSBC Private Equity company, Spacemaker (Emirates) LLC. Both are now run under a single management umbrella.

Today, Byrne is one of the longest established and well-known rental companies in the region. Through a network of thirteen operational bases spread across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), Qatar, UAE and Oman, Byrne specialise in the provision of high quality equipment rental solutions to a broad variety of business sectors including oil & gas,

In Dubai Byrne are heavily into sports and music events, whereas in the eastern provinces of Saudi Arabia and in Qatar Byrne are much more heavily focused on oil & gas related activity.

The growth of the leisure, sport and tourism industries in the region has developed a need for very individual and tailor made services in order to make each event more extravagant and memorable than the next. It is by meeting this need that the Events Division of the company has grown to become a key part of the overall business and continues to expand its products and services today. The customers of this division cover a range of regional sporting and entertainment events year after year. These include golf tournaments, horse

A specialist business of Zamil Industrial Investment Company, Zamil AC was one of the first air-conditioning companies in the Saudi Arabia and today is the leading international manufacturer and service provider of air conditioning systems for a demanding Middle East market.

Founded in 1974, Zamil Air Conditioners is now recognised as a complete air-conditioning solution provider, with an impressive portfolio

of innovative products that continue to service the residential, commercial and industrial sectors across the world today.

“We are the largest supplier of air conditioners in the Middle East,” says COO Osama Bunyan.

“We started off by simply manufacturing room air-conditioners and have grown to offer end-to-end HVAC custom solutions, right from application study, engineering, manufacturing, supply, installation, commissioning and a long-term maintenance agreement,” Bunyan continues.

Perhaps Zamil Air Conditioners’ success lies in the fact that its products are completely designed, manufactured and fabricated in Saudi Arabia to the highest and most stringent of international standards.

“The quality of our products and services are among the best in the industry,” Bunyan says. “Zamil Air Conditioners has contributed to the region’s tremendous growth over the past few decades by providing

reliable products, unrivalled service and our pioneering efforts.”

Zamil AC recently released the ResisTec product line of high quality, anti-corrosion coating solutions, created specifically for HVAC products and components.

The company developed ResisTec® protective coating to help lower lifecycle costs, minimise HVAC depreciation, and provide customers with the option to choose high quality products and services that help them to substantially reduce costs and produce a healthier bottom line.

The innovative, environmentally-friendly ResisTec technology protects HVAC equipment from corrosion and deterioration with a negligible effect on the performance of the coated coils due to the slight drop in air pressure and change in the K-Value. ResisTec was developed specifically to lengthen the product life cycle and minimize equipment failure, especially under harsh Middle Eastern climate conditions.

Zamil air Conditioners The company has introduced a number of new

products that were required by the market, including high-energy efficiency chillers.

The company expects a significant increase in demand for sustainable and environmentally-friendly products.

The company sells its products in more than 90 different countries.

It has manufacturing facilities in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Austria, India, Vietnam and Italy.

With a near 80-year history and a reputation for innovative products that stand the test of time, Pittsburgh Corning’s revolutionary FOAMGLAS insulation continues to be an industry leader.

Pittsburgh Corning began when the American Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and Corning Glass formed the Corning Corporation in 1937. The new company spent two decades researching the science behind industrial glass applications; a practice which continues today through a rigorous R&D programme.

With demand for FOAMGLAS and Pittsburgh Corning’s glass blocks growing world-wide, the company then moved into the European market. A production unit opened in Belgium in 1962, close to vast resources of sand, to reduce the transportation of raw materials. Today, FOAMGLAS products are manufactured

sAinT-GObAin GYPROC Saint-Gobain is a world leader in the design and manufacture of lightweight building systems, with operations in 64 countries and a heritage that dates back to 1665. The company has been active in the Middle East since 2004 and began trading in the region under the Gyproc name in 2005.

Demand for the company’s market leading partition, wall lining and ceiling systems has continued to grow rapidly, leading Saint-Gobain to undertake major investment in the area, culminating in the opening of a US$60 million plasterboard manufacturing plant in Abu Dhabi, in April 2010.

Capable of producing in excess of 30 million sqm of high quality plasterboard products a year, the-state-of-the-art plant, opened by HE Sheikh Mohammed Bin Sultan Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan and Claude Imauven, president of Saint-Gobain Construction Products, is the first of its kind in the region for Saint-Gobain and local partners,

acoustic and impact performance to meet every requirement, whilst saving costs and enabling much faster build and project completion times.

As the world leader in its field, Saint-Gobain Gyproc invests heavily in research and development, and is able to leverage global resources to develop innovative new solutions to building challenges, and to focus these to meet the needs of the Middle East market. Using global plasterboard manufacturing expertise, Saint-Gobain Gyproc has been able to build unique relationships with local specifiers, engineers and contractors, and use its local knowledge and experience to provide solutions tailored to suit local needs and building techniques. In 2011, this included launching an on-site training programme of 8 courses for installers and 2 for site

managers, which builds into a knowledge bank covering every one of the company’s core products and systems.

Reassuringly, behind everything the company does is an overriding focus on safety. Not only are products and systems designed for ultimate safety on site – safety is also a priority for the Abu Dhabi plant which, in February 2013, totted-up over 1,300 days without a single lost-time accident - a very important safety milestone and a real achievement for everyone involved.

Although they are part of the global Saint-Gobain group, with operations throughout the world, Gyproc‘s primary target will always be the Middle East. This allows the company to concentrate on serving local customers and developing products that are appropriate to the local market.

The company will continue to focus on the building and construction sector, whilst constantly looking into new products and systems that enable them to serve new areas of this market developing new applications for their thermal, fire, impact, moisture and acoustic systems, alongside recent additions in mold prevention and indoor air quality.

Gyproc plasters and plasterboard linings are also fully recyclable and manufactured from gypsum, with a very large recycled content, making them inherently environment-friendly. They also benefit from the company’s lean manufacturing techniques and World Class Manufacturing programme, which minimises energy and raw material usage and wastage. This results in a significant contribution to sustainability in buildings.

The group has nine major research centres and more than 100 development units employing some 3,700 research workers around the world. In 2011 it invested more than €430 million in research and development at these facilities alone.

Gyproc’s objective is to deliver a constant stream of new products and processes that support their market leading position and better serve customers in an industry that is constantly changing.

Saint-Gobain Gyproc’s innovation programme is focused on building sustainability ratings through improved energy utilisation and better acoustics and reducing environmental impacts through plant initiatives such as reused heat and water schemes and lower raw material usage and wastage.

Over the last decade, GMMOS has cultivated the products and services it offers to diversify and expand to new commercial and geographic markets, while more than tripling its staff and retaining – and continuing to strengthen – its core focus on oil and gas.

Established in 1983 Gulf Marine Maintenance and Offshore Service Company (GMMOS) Dubai LLC, provided offshore services to the Middle East’s oil and gas industry: vessels from which maintenance, modifications and upgrades were carried out to offshore working platforms; transport for cargo and personnel, and tows. Over the years GMMOS has diversified the equipment it fabricates and today the company is a world leader in the fabrication of pressure vessels, process piping

and skid packages, modules, legs for a maintenance windmill vessels, spud cans, evaporators and boilers.

Such rapid and continued growth has seen GMMOS move its primary logistics base from Al Jaddaf on the Dubai Creek, to Industrial Zone 1 in Jebel Ali in 2005 and as well as to Ras Al Khaimah in 2008; a decision taken to ensure the new facility was surrounded with high quality infrastructure, thus providing even better service for clients via direct access to the sea for loading heavy and bulky equipment onto barges.

Specifically introduced to serve CIS countries, a 50,000 sqm facility was opened at the port city of Aktau on the Caspian Sea, in the Republic of Kazakhstan, in 2005. Operating as GMMOS Kazakhstan LLP, the new company currently manufactures desalination evaporators in consortium

with SIDEM, while also fabricating other equipment for clients in the oil and gas industry in Russia and the CIS.

From its UAE base, GMMOS serves a worldwide market in the Engineering-Procurement-Construction (EPC) industry in addition to the major process houses of the international world; end- users typically comprising national and international oil and gas companies and desalination plants, among others. Supporting the growth, GMMOS currently employs approximately 650 specialists at its UAE base and a further 130 at its dedicated CIS and Russia base for GMMOS Kazakhstan LLP.

the products supplied by Dubai Precast cater to the basic concepts of industrialisation; working both on and offsite simultaneously and constructing projects with modularity.

Precast is usually specified due to a number of its properties, which include: strength, durability, easy and efficient installation, quality control and aesthetics.

As an inherently eco-friendly way to build, precast is energy efficient, recyclable, reusable and produces minimal waste in the plan and on site.

The high durability of precast concrete results in buildings with a total service life that far outpaces other structural solutions; factors that are key to meeting increasingly demanding environmental standards.

Additionally, precast as a construction material offers high thermal mass; an important part of building design. When aiming to achieve the US-based sustainability criteria set out in the LEED standards, the benefits of thermal mass will become more apparent to designers in the future.

The initiative was named the ‘best green investment project’ and through product innovation and customer education, cut back the amount of paper used by Dhofar customers by 22%, saving them money and reducing the harmful carbon emissions produced in the manufacturing process. The second new initiative was the “colour

magnet”. Colour codification has become an integral aspect of the hygiene business. It has always been lacking in the tissue industry, an area where it should be of utmost importance.

Dhofar has opted for white in the guest areas. The colour denotes purity and is generally pleasant and neutral enough to complement most surroundings. Blue is a particularly pronounced colour and is therefore used in the kitchen or food preparation areas. If it falls on produce,

it can be easily spotted. Green is the colour used in areas of general purpose.

Dhofar has supplied to a number of projects. It has a three-year contract as the tissue supplier for government mosques in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Inflight Catering has renewed a contract with it for a second year as has Abu Dhabi Hospitality, and it has successfully initiated a project for washroom solution products with Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technology.

Building on its 50-year reputation of its Danish-based parent company, Arminox Middle East was established in 2001 in the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) close to Dubai; growth and expansion facilitated by the regional popularity of stainless steel reinforcement building solutions.

Arminox is a production, trading and service company; developing, designing and selling stainless steel for use in the construction industry globally.

Products include alloys, coils, rebar, stirrups and rebar wire mesh.

A world leader in stainless steel reinforcement technology and still expanding; the company today sells its products worldwide and employs around 400 workers at its facilities located in

the UK, Europe, the Middle East and its recently opened operation in Canada. A new office in Qatar opened recently and the company has plans to open a new base in Saudi Arabia in the near future.

“Arminox is the only supplier, capable of offering a turnkey solution to its clients. Arminox will assist its client from the beginning of the project, advising clients and consultants, sourcing and processing material, taking responsibility for matching all relevant standards and securing full traceability of the supplied material,” asserts Torben Krebs general manager, Arminox Middle East.

Having supplied more than 8000 tons of stainless steel reinforcement over the past year, Arminox has successfully completed marine

related projects such as ports, bridges and sewage installations.

“Over the years, structures have become more and more complex and extreme in size.

This has resulted in a demand for extreme durability within such structures, with minimal maintenance, in order to ensure a positive result, convincing many investors and project owners to insist that the designers and consultants specify the most durable material possible, stainless steel,” Krebs says.

Reporting that the company is constantly looking for new opportunities to add to its portfolio of high quality steel products, Krebs adds that Arminox will further expand into Asian markets, where a lot of new products are being planned.

“Apart from the established markets, Arminox is looking very much in to the emerging markets where infrastructure is being built in great numbers; particularly mainland China looks promising, as do countries like Malaysia,” Kerbs explains.CONTACT

Infrastructure is becoming more expensive, the demand for longer lifetimes are also increasing.

New specs mean that a bridge has to last 120 years.

The Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi was the first in the region to use stainless steel reinforcement.

Arminox utilises a fully computerised system where it does the bar bending schedules before construction.

Megger has manufacturing facilities in the USA, United Kingdom and Sweden, each incorporating their own engineering teams for new product research and development.

The Megger product range is sold throughout the world through a series of specialised distributors who are acknowledged experts in this field and within their own individual countries.

These local distributors are supported by Megger’s own technical, sales and marketing teams.

Megger operates in the Middle East via technical, sales and marketing offices located in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

General manager for Middle East and Africa, Nick Parton, adds: “Megger Limited has a strong presence in the region and opening and developing our own offices in Bahrain, Saudi and now UAE has allowed us to be closer to our customers and offer

a speedier after sales service.”These offices provide sales and

technical services to the local markets, helping the local distributors to promote and sell the products, as well as answering technical queries, performing induction training to the end users in the use of the equipment, and looking after local service, repair and calibration operations.

While the company has been active in the region for several decades, the size of the local workforce has grown rapidly over the past five years, as local offices have been established employing primarily Saudi and Bahraini engineers, growing from one to 11 team members, now reporting through the regional headquarters in Dubai. Eagle Electromechanical Company Co LLC was established in Sharjah, by Mohammed Hijaz, in 1985. The company’s initial business, with only five people, was concentrated on electromechanical works in the water sector. Times were difficult for companies operating in the Gulf and the company expanded along with the region into a diversified water and wastewater contracting company.

Eagle’s range of expertise broadened to include work on plumbing projects, lift stations and sewage treatment plants. In the 1990s, it started to focus on design and build contracts for water and sewage treatment plants. Eagle’s major breakthrough was in 1987 and 1988, when it was awarded a series of military contracts.

Then, in 1988, the company was granted a design, build and operate contract for a sewage treatment plant at the Dubai Police School, becoming the first UAE-based company to work on such a prestigious project. Eagle continued the same approach throughout the 1990s.

In 1995 Hijaz founded Al Hijaz Mechanical Equipment Co LLC, the Dubai-based sister company of Eagle. At the same time, sustained

by the construction boom in Dubai, international consultants and contractors garnered interest in Al Hijaz Mechanical Equipment and Eagle Electromechanical, enabling the companies to work on yet larger projects.

Today they offer custom design, supply, construction, operation and maintenance services in the fields of wastewater and water treatment, recycling, reclamation and reuse; pumping stations, networks and reservoirs for wastewater and water; electrical medium-voltage and low-voltage networks and

substations; electromechanical works for a diverse array of facilities from luxury villas to high rise buildings.

Al Hijaz Mechanical Equipment is registered in Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah Free Zone and newly in Abu Dhabi, while Eagle Electromechanical is registered in Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai Free Zone. Eagle Electromechanical and Al Hijaz Mechanical Equipment have grown rapidly, becoming two of the largest water and wastewater contracting companies in the UAE.

The company has expanded regionally, with the opening of branches in

Jordan as Eagle Jordan Construction Contracting Co LLC. Since 2012 Eagle is operating in Saudi Arabia as Saudi Eagle Environmental Contracting Co LLC.

Having carried out projects in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Palestine, the UAE, Sudan, and Azerbaijan, the company is currently expanding its presence across the region. Within the GCC it is chiefly targeting water works and sewage treatment plants. Iraq will soon follow and Bahrain, Oman, Tunesia, Syria, offer promising prospects for the company as it creates relations with certain parties for sewage treatment and pumping stations.

Regionally for wastewater treatment, there is a need for mobile, temporary solutions, so where we are seeing is a growing demand for the fast delivery of these compact sewage treatment plants. With higher effluent standards, driven by the need to reuse water locally, the MBR is a very suitable solution. The company has launched a mobile package product with hollow fibre membranes which treats 500 m3/d of domestic wastewater. This skidded mobile plant is available in three options which are proposed to the client on the basis of the layout and space availability.

Working to promote Malaysian timber products around the world, the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) was established in 1992 with an initial remit to counter the anti-tropical timber campaign in Europe, as well as to procure raw materials for the Malaysian timber industry.

A semi-governmental – rather than commercial – entity, it has focussed on the marketing and promotion of Malaysian timber products and in 1999 established a regional office in Dubai in response to the significance

of a growing MENA market. Two other offices have also been established in London (since 1993) to serve Europe and in Shanghai (since 1999) to cater to the Far East market. The council has a staff strength of 64 at its HQ and across all its branches.

Explaining the council’s logo, Director Khairul Anwar says the five sides of the green pentagon represent MTC’s five founding members which are the timber-based associations, each of which has around 150 of its own members.

While the overall aim is to assist the Government of Malaysia in achieving its target of $18 billion of wood-based exports by the Year 2020, the council’s primary objectives include expansion of the industry’s manufacturing technology base, and augmentation of the supply of raw materials from around the world.

MTC provides information and samples to encourage clients to try new materials or products, and different species. Since 1993, MTC has also been the Malaysian timber industry’s mouthpiece on ‘green’ issues. Malaysia’s firm stand on non-tariff barriers disguised as ‘green’ concerns has been communicated

to the necessary authorities in environmentally sensitive markets.

The exponential growth in the export of Malaysian timber to markets such as the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, India, Sri Lanka, Poland, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Russia is partly due to the Council’s various marketing and promotional activities in these emerging economies since the year 2000.

MTC is continuing to look for and develop opportunities for the Malaysian timber industry, in line with the Malaysian Government’s aim to achieve multi-billion dollar sales of the country’s wood-based exports by the Year 2020.
