A Message from our President Gate City Quilt Guild Gazette Volume XI, Issue 4, April 2019 Guild Events Next meeting: April 4, 2019 ~6:30pm, social time ~7pm, meeting starts Location New Garden Friends Meeting 801 New Garden Road What to Bring: * Name Tag * Show and Tell * Checkbook to pay for membership or workshop I can tell Spring has come since our guild is hippity-hopping with lots of activity! Our month starts out with a program by talented Augusta Cole followed by a Saturday Wheel of Fortune workshop. There is still time to sign up, but space is limited to 20 people! Contact Karen Cartlidge. Then we have the inauguration of our Guild Mini Groups. I’m looking forward to the sharing and company of wannabe and experienced free motion quilters in my first mini. Carol Lejda is our fearless leader in trying to promote friendship and perhaps skill through our connection to quilting. You can jump into a Boutique workshop or pick up a project at the guild meeting. Sue Roth and Donna Paulsen continue with these workshops once a month to be sure visitors to our next quilt show will not be disappointed in the availability of great items to purchase. They always need lots of quilt-bunnies on their committee! Gail White and Lori Young continue the guild’s prolific charity efforts and love to have your skills (absolute beginner to seasoned quilter) at the monthly charity get-together. You can pick up a project at the guild meeting to work at home or create something from your overflowing scraps or stash. Let’s not forget Show and Tell! We want to see what you have made! I have heard members say they don’t feel that their work is good enough to show. Hogwash!!! Everything you make is worth showing. Sharing your work is how we get to know you. The story that goes with your quilt is far more important than having your points match. I look forward to getting to know more of you at the next meeting. Our guild is your guild. We want you to tell us what you want from our guild by filling out a couple of surveys. The Program Committee (Karen Cartlldge and Bette Brownlow) are planning speakers and workshops through 2020. So, now is the time to tell them what you want to learn about. The Boutique committee also wants your input. You can return the surveys at the guild meeting, email those committee chairs or you can always contact me. For just one month, I get to play newsletter editor while Caryn Wright is traveling. Caryn promised me that she would pre-format the newsletter with her great graphics and organization to keep the high quality she has been giving us. Send anything you want to share with guild members to me by April 22. In the meantime, enjoy the inspiration of Spring. Valerie

Editor’s Note:

Quilts pictured on page 1 are by Terry Aske. See more on her website.

http://www.terryaskeartquilts.com/Studio/gallery/rainy-day-people-the-story-so-far/ I edge-stitched the fused buildings and the smaller pedestrians. The larger people and umbrellas were outlined with narrow zigzag stitch. After sandwiching the quilt, I machine-stitched ‘rain’ with a variegated black-white-gray thread.

April 4 “Scrap Party”

Augusta Cole, Augusta Cole Quilting, Richmond, VA

Augusta brings her scrappy quilts to share. Augusta loves to plunder her stash to create beautiful quilts. “Variety is the spice of life” being her motto, it is no surprise that most of her quilts use scraps. Come enjoy and discover ways she uses her scraps. If you have a favorite scrap quilt you would like to share with the guild, please bring it with you.

Saturday, April 6 “Wheel of Fortune” 9:30 until 4 - 4:30. This is a 6 hour workshop with a break for lunch.

The Wheel of Fortune quilt is one of Augusta’s very favorites. You will love making this quilt. You may choose to use a very controlled palette or her version, which is "Variety is the Spice of Life”. The “Wheel of Fortune” pattern fee if $5.00 (payable to instructor) for each student and the workshop fee is $65.00 (payable to GCQG). She will take 20 students for this workshop, so the first 20 people to contact me will be registered. A workshop supply list will be provided upon registration.

Contact Karen Cartlidge at [email protected] or text to 304-279-1296. Please provide your name, phone number, and email.

Matthew Emerson will present a lecture on Color Theory for the Quilter.

Program: May 2, 2019

Matthew Emerson, “Color Theory for the Quilter”

Emerson & CO Quilting, Winston-Salem, NC

[email protected]

What makes a quilt a success? The answers are many. But one design

area of quilting has more influence on successful quilts than the

others…color. In Matthew Emerson’s program “Color Theory for the

Quilter” he explores methods of choosing fabric colors, why some color

combinations are more pleasing than others, and how to plan and

arrange your colors for a successful quilt.

Matthew’s goal in this program is not to prescribe a process for choosing colors, or even

to mandate a set of unbending principles, but to encourage you to make honest,

thoughtful, and personal decisions in your quilting. Because some of the topics in the

lecture can be a bit technical, Matthew is careful to infuse humor and real-world

applications of the concepts into the presentation. He guarantee’s you will learn

something and laugh while you do.

Everyone will receive a handout of helpful resources and color principles at the end of the

program.

Program: June 6, 2019

“Fabric to Dye For”, Karen Cartlidge, Gate City Quilt Guild Member

beginner’s quilting class at the Caswell County Senior Center once a month. Along with

quilting, Karen has taught classes in needle punch embroidery, tin punch, and locker

hooking. She is also a basket maker and a beginning rug hooker and knitter.

The program, “Fabric to Dye For” will cover the basics of fabric dyeing in preparation for

her workshop on Saturday, June 8. She will also have samples of basic dyeing techniques

to share with the group. A handout will be provided to all attendees.
