Chorale News

April flowers will sure be welcome after the blustery winds of much of March.
And we've lot's of good reading and listening on tap in our library.
Managing Bubbie by Rossel Lazega in a six CD story about his grandmother, her indomitable spirit, her refusal to
follow rules or to give up. All of which saved her and her family from the Nazis during WW11. It features the voic-
es (in character) of Linda Lavin, Gavin MacLeol, Renee Taylor, Lainie Kazan, Judy Tenuta, Alex McKenna, Kassie
Lazega, Russel Lazega and J.J.Crowns. The book club read the book and Russel entertained us at a very enjoyable
luncheon meeting in March.
Our non fiction book this month is a memoir called On The Move, a life, by Oliver Sacks. “Sacks writes about the
passions that have driven his life – from motorcycles and weight lifting to neurology and poetry. … On the move is
the story of a brilliantly unconventional physician and writer, a man who has illuminated the many ways that the
brain makes us human.”
The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict is the story of Mileva “Mitza” Maric, Einstein's first wife. She was a brilliant
scientist in her own right and it is suspected that the theory of relativity may have been hers. It portrays Einstein as a
selfish, self serving individual who made many promises to his mathematically brilliant wife but kept few. It is fic-
tional but makes one wonder.
Stuart Woods and Parnell Hall's Smooth Operator again introduces Teddy Fay. Teddy is ex CIA. “Using every bit
of his masterful cunning and total anonymity to best advantage, Teddy immediately hits the pavement to dig further
into a mystery that becomes more twisted as the clues are revealed. When circumstances escalate to a fever pitch, he
holds not only the fate of a young woman in his hands, but the fate of a nation.”
The last meeting of The Highlands Ridge Book Discussion Group before the Summer break will be on April 27 at
l:30 in the library. Book to be discussed is The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende.
Hello all! Well the “season” is nearly over and the snow-birds will soon be leaving us to return to their northern
nests. With that said, we in the chorale will be on hiatus until the fall. Some of us will be leaving paradise as well,
but some stay all year.
It’s hard to believe our concert season is over. We certainly hope you enjoyed our spring concert as much as we
did performing it for you. It truly was our pleasure. We do what we love and we hope it shows! If there is anyone
out there that would like to sing along with us, please don’t be nervous. We have such a great time and there are
plenty of us to help you out. Just give our co-directors a call and they will get you an easy and quick try-out. It’s
that simple. We rehearse twice a week on Tuesdays 3:30-5pm and Saturday mornings 8:30-10am. That’s it! So
think about it. We especially need basses, baritones and tenors. But all are welcome. Come on guys, give it a shot
and join the fun!
A huge thank you to our 2017 Patrons!! This has been our biggest year yet! We couldn’t do what we do without
you. If you missed the spring concert deadline, never fear you can still donate and we’ll add your name to the 2017
Christmas concert program.
We have so many gifted people in our chorale, but it wouldn’t be the same without our wonderful accompanist,
Judy Vekasy. She’s a talented marvel and we love her! And, of course, what can I say about our Co-Directors, Sue
Shellhammer and Cindy Becker? What a gift you give us all year. Your talent and love of what you do is apparent
in the way you bring out the best in all of us. We are truly blessed to have you!
The chorale will be saying “so long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye” to our Chorale family and their spouses
with a “Goodbye Happy Hour” on March 21 in Founder’s Hall from 3:30-5pm Heavy hor devours will be provided.
Thank you all again for a great season!! Have a blessed and Happy Easter!!

THE CASE OF THE CONFUSED CHURCH-GOER
“What do you mean I am not a true Christian? I believe in God, I keep (most of) the Ten Commandments
and I go to church (sometimes, when not playing golf Sunday mornings)! I am as good as the next person!”
Well, have you been born twice? Jesus said, “Do not be surprised when I say that you must be born
again” (John 3:7)
“Huh? What is this mumbo-jumbo about being born again? I hear that used in many ways, talking about a
fresh start or something.”
Well, Jesus explained to a religious seeker that we need two births: one physical, into the human family; and
one spiritual, into God’s family/kingdom. Spiritual birth happens when you ADMIT you need forgiveness
for sins, BELIEVE that Christ died on the Cross in your place to provide forgiveness and rose from the dead
to give you eternal life, and CONFESS that you have received Jesus into your life as your Savior and Lord
(John 1:12)
It is NOT automatic, it is NOT just attending church, it is NOT just believing that God exists, it is a change of
heart and a PERSONAL COMMITMENT to Christ that determines whether you are a true Christian.
My grandparents were prominent, respected church-goers all their lives and were indignant if anybody
thought they were not true Christians. Not until age 80 did they understand the spiritual birth and made that
decision to receive Christ personally (John 1:12) and commit their lives to Him. At that point they were born
into God’s forever family and were ready for Heaven. I can’t wait to be with them again forever !
HOW ABOUT YOU? Have you experienced this life-changing spiritual birth? If not, we are here to help.
Jesus stated firmly that unless you are born again you cannot even see the Kingdom of God (John 3:3)

Pickleball News By: Bob Cisler , President
IS IT APRIL ALREADY? The years never seemed to go this fast when I was 30, heck, even 40 and 50.
So, what does LA LA LAND AND HR PICKLEBALL have in common? At the Academy Awards, Warren
Beatty (50 Year Anniversary of Bonnie and Clyde) announces LA LA LAND as the winner of best picture.
BUT WAIT! Warren has been given the wrong card and the best picture winner is Moonlight. LA LA
LAND was the favorite and they lost. At the 2017 Central Florida Pickleball League "Shootout" Highlands
Ridge was the #1 seed and, much like LA LA LAND, we lost. Our HR team took second. Now, some teams
might be pleased with second yet HR has won the Championship 3 of 6 years and the distaste of the loss will
linger until next season. Should the core of the team choose to return to Highlands Ridge, HR should be
poised to regain the Championship next year.
HR is "home" to several outstanding players who have earned medals from various tournaments this season
and their pictures and names appear often in the Highlands News-Sun: Chris Donaghy, Mickey Dorman,
Doug Ebeling, Donna Landers (goodness, if it were not for the graciousness and patience of Donna and Jean
Walker, Sandi and I would not be playing this wonderful game), Susan Price, Gary Schinderle, Dave Shaner,
Sue Shaner and it is a joy to watch these fine players who have honed their skills at our 2 courts and have
taken their game to a high level.
Yet, as much as I enjoy watching or competing against these top players it is the everyday play of all of
members that I will miss as folks begin to depart HR and travel to other places that will bring joy and happi-
ness to them.
The "everyday" play does create some admiration for me: I admire the serve of Leo Racicot (heck, I envy
most any player with a serve), I admire the pure joy that Ralph and Judy Mete display playing the game, I
admire the wisdom about the game that Ron Curry has, I admire the knowledge of the game that Dave
Majick has, I admire the competitive zeal that Jane Anne Dunham displays, and I admire all the ladies who
laugh and have fun on Pickle Pal Tuesdays. I admire the growth I have seen in every player who plays on
our courts.
HR has 51 members playing the fastest growing sport in America, Pickleball, yet we will miss two of our
long time members:
Dale Flores has passed on and we know he is playing Pickleball in heaven and he has his choice of multiple
courts. Peter Gardner has returned to England to battle and win against an illness. We pray Peter will be back
to our courts. My favorite quote from Peter, as a player hits a soft, high return to an opponent, "that is like
feeding strawberries to a donkey."
Wherever you travel to this summer, create fun, keep playing, hit the ball hard and "don't feed strawberries
to a donkey."
By the time you read this, many of you will have already left for the great North. We’ll miss you of
course, and wish you the very best summer with your families. Keep in touch.
President Cindy Robinette introduced new council members, Jim Haas, Jim Abercrombie, Susan Ingram, and
Karen O’Laughlin. Jim Haas was elected Vice President and Jim Abercrombie was chosen to be the Marina
Cove representative. All other officers remain the same.
At this meeting, we talked about plans for the coming year. Some changes may be made to the Holly Jolly
Christmas party. Stay tuned.
Terry Carlson, activities director, had her hands full the weekend that Founder’s Hall was booked with four
major events in a 24 hour period. All events went well, and she came through like a trooper. Thanks to all
of you who helped with these successful events. That is what keeps us “ old folks” going.
Safe travels to those who are leaving.
Stay well and we’ll see you in the fall.

Thank You Letters
To all our great friends and neighbors of Highlands Ridge:
My family and I cannot express how grateful we are that Ben and I chose Highlands Ridge to live out
our golden years. All the cards, food and heart felt hugs have been wonderful. Ben loved this place and
the people. All of your prayers have helped me a lot and I am so humbled. Thank you from the bottom of
our hearts and God Bless you all.
Much Appreciated, Sherri Coyner and Family
I feel so blessed to have friends and neighbors like you who showered me with well-wishes, prayers, cards,
flowers and dinners during these many months of recovery.
Thank you all, Willi Grotjohan
I wish to thank those who sent sympathy cards in the loss of my brother Tom Rost. We appreciate your
prayers and thoughtfulness.
Gods Blessings, Pat and John Yirsa
HR Residents,
On behalf of Samaritans Touch Care Center, I want to thank you for your support during our recent golf
tournament. We made $14,500 and with our recent funding cuts from Highlands County, it was much
needed. Again, thank you to those that played and the many that made a contribution.

Jack Macneil shot a 52 during the Sunday afternoon 9 hole group on February 12.
He was playing with Laura Daniels on south course and chipped in for a par on hole # 4 . By the way Jack
was 93 years young at the time. He really enjoyed golf and always had that competitive keep fighting on
spirit. How inspiring is that! Way to go Jack, we miss you very much. Sunday Golf Group
On Sunday, March 12, 2017, Marina Cove HOA held their first Quarter Raffle. We would like to thank all
of Highlands Ridge for making this an exciting event. Many guess's were out on the total amount that we
raised. Well here it is. $2,548.98.
I would like to thank all of our team who worked many hours to make this a success!!! I'm sure that the
Food for Families and the school Backpack program will be delighted to receive our gifts to them.
On February 7th 2017, Nancy and Don Davis celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Congratulations Nancy and Don!!!
Are you or your neighbor in their 90’s? Yes, 90 as
in 90 years of young age!! If so, please call the

Our Quarter Raffle was a big success and we look forward to having another next year!
Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 11th at 1:00 p.m. in FH meeting room. Safe travels to our Departing Snow-
birds and Happy Spring to all!
Greetings and Happy Spring from the HRHOA Board.
The Annual Meeting was held on March 13. Thank you to those who attended. Please welcome our newly
elected Board members, Gary Dobereiner, Rick Nicholson, and Pat Shine, each elected to serve a two year
term. They join Ron Robinett, Gary Nielson, Dale Huffman, and Willie Faye Myers, all who have one year
remaining of their term.
By now, all residents should have received both a garbage and a recycling receptacle. For our yard debris,
the large container will still be on site at the storage lot. It has been an extreme undertaking for Highlands
County to implement this program, and glitches can and have occurred. We ask that if you have any
unresolved issues regarding garbage and waste collection, please contact a Board member. We will pass
your concerns on to Don Elwell, the Highlands County Commissioner who serves Highlands Ridge resi-
dents. Also, as a reminder, all receptacles must be kept in the garage, and our pick up day for both garbage
and recyclables is Friday.
For the Villas residents....regarding the tree removal-15 trees were removed several months ago due to the
root systems damaging the irrigation system and the street. Trees will not be replanted for obvious reasons,
and Birdy is consulting with a professional landscaping firm for an alternative plan.
For more information on our Annual Meeting, visit the Highlands Ridge website, as well as
information posted on the bulletin board in Founder’s Hall.
Our next Board meeting will be on April 10 at 4 pm in Founders Hall. Hope to see you there.

LGA NEWS

~~~AH, APRIL, THE MONTH FOR FOOLS~~~
It's hard to believe the season is almost over and many of us will be leaving Paradise for the Summer. But
before we get too sad, let's recap the great March we just had in LGA! Marilyn Videbeck pulled off
another fantastic Round Robin with her sidekick, Jo Johnson. Even one day of "damp" weather couldn't
put a "damper" on the fun we had playing golf and socializing over a delicious lunch at the Tavern! Willie
Faye and Cheryl waved their magic wand and produced another successful Choose Up with 64 players and
a Pizza Lunch at Founder’s Hall. That's really being creative!! Thanks to all who helped both events! At
the time of this writing, the Member-Guest and Farewell are still on the horizon, but true to form, Bobbi
Pinckney and her band of volunteers are sure to host another great tournament, once again showcasing
Highlands Ridge golf!⛳ the Farewell scramble will end with a nice luncheon meeting in which next year's
officers will be introduced.
Finally, April will bring our last official event as we join with the 9 hole league for a fun day of golf and
another luncheon at the Tavern. After that, it's bye-bye, bon voyage, happy trails, toodle-oo, adios amigos,
and see ya later, alligator!
A SPECIAL QUOTE FOR APRIL FOOL'S DAY
