Overview: The Works, Inc. Our mission is to work to rebuild, restore and
renew our community’s families, and the environments in which they live through housing, economic development, and social services.
Goals:1. Increasing the availability of affordable housing.2. Delivering programs and services related to
affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization.3. Providing the social services, advocacy, and
support requisite for families’ holistic, healthful, socioeconomic success.

Fellowship Objectives Develop an understanding of how anthropology
applies to community development projects Explore the relationship between community
development efforts and healthy communities Explore the role that improved food access can
play in neighborhood health, economic development, and quality of life
Hone business plan writing, research, and data analysis skills
Improve networking and advocacy skills
Placement Role Participation in ongoing South Memphis Farmers
Market research, including instrument design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination
Developing a business plan for the new South Memphis Farmer’s Market building
Create a central online database and templates for correspondence
Participation in South Memphis Farmers Market planning activities
Assisting with grant writing related to programming and funding for the South Memphis Farmers Market

• South Memphis Farmers Market (SMFM) instrument design, data collection and analysis
• Directory of services available in the South Memphis Community
• Research for SMFM permanent structure business plan Spring 2012
• Assist in grant writing related to food access and training in the South Memphis community

• Create a central online database and templates for SMFM and South Memphis Revitalization Action Plan (SoMe RAP) correspondence
