This directory of services relating to mental healthissues has been compiled and published jointly bypartners from the Voluntary and Statutory sectors (inparticular Caerphilly Social Services and GAVO).

The focus is on services within Caerphilly borough, butincludes some services which are nearby, but areavailable to residents from Caerphilly.

Also included are some national organisations,particularly those that offer telephone helpline services.

Web-site addresses have been included, whereavailable, thus enabling people to obtain current andadditional information.

A web-site to include this Directory information is in thefinal stages of development. This will make publishingchanges and amendments possible at minimal cost.The web-site development has been conducted withHafal, in Aberbargoed, and is an excellent example ofinvolving people with a living experience of mentalhealth problems in developing services. On-goingmaintenance will also be carried out by people withexperience of mental health problems.

The South Wales Mental Health Advocacy Service is anindependent professional service. Service users andcarers living in Caerphilly County Borough area, orreceiving services there, can request an appointment(no charge).

The advocate visits various locations in the borough,including Ty Sirhowy in-patient unit (Blackwood),Blackwood Resource Centre, Pentrebane Street and Ty Siriol (Caerphilly) and Hafod Deg (Rhymney).Advocacy can help if you have issues which need to beclearly expressed, or if you have complaints orproblems with services.

Aims: To provide a formal advocacy service to peoplewho are in - and day - patients of psychiatric units andday hospitals in Caerphilly county borough. Also toprovide advocacy at specific resource and user centresin the borough.

The purpose of the Caerphilly Self-Help Group is toprovide a warm, safe and friendly environment forpeople affected by depression. It aims to providemembers with mutual support and understanding bysharing experiences and also to work co-operatively topool information and practical ways of coping withstress, anxiety and depression. This Group hasoperated at other venues within Caerphilly. It wasoriginally set up in May 2001, and meetings at this thirdlocation began in 2005, having assisted formermembers to regain employment or to lead a morestable life where weekly meetings were no longernecessary to them.

There are plans to help understanding of aspects ofdepression, by inviting health professionals,pharmacists, and holistic practitioners from time to time,and to explore other areas of interest which maypositively benefit the group’s members. Visits to otherself-help groups, a small library of tapes, literature andCDs are other initiatives being explored.

GAVO provides the Mental Health Development Service for the former county of Gwent and RhymneyValley. It provides advice and information to voluntarybodies and statutory agencies, helps with projectdevelopment, assists partnership working betweenvoluntary and statutory agencies e.g. Health and Social Services.

It works together to identify un-met needs in thecommunity in order to develop new activities andservices. GAVO is often called on to signpost people toappropriate services. In co-operation with national andlocal organisations, GAVO supports (and has initiatedsome) local mental health self-help groups, step-ins,drop-ins and campaigning groups.

GAVO often accepts a coordinating role on issuesimportant to people with mental health issues andservice providers, such as the Mental Health Bill, andreports views to policy makers.

Inside Out provides free Community Arts workshops foradults to improve physical and mental well-being, andwhere people can learn new skills and meet newfriends. It is user led and aims to help people becomemore accepted and involved with the communitieswhere they live. Inside Out does this by runningworkshops in all different art forms; these includemusic, poetry, dance, photography, creative writing,painting, digital storytelling and any other art forms inresponse to need. It can be helpful if workshopscontain both mental health service users and peoplewho have no history of mental health problems.

Inside Out is not about art therapy, but about peoplebeing helped to express themselves through creativearts. Therefore it employs professional artists, nottherapists. Many people attend groups with their carers,who also take part. Workshops take place throughoutthe Caerphilly Borough, in community buildings.“Taster” sessions can be arranged.

Mental Health Day Services currently provided byCaerphilly Social Services and the Gwent HealthcareNHS Trust have attracted funds through the WelshAssembly Government’s recent Wanless Funding todevelop an Integrated Day Opportunity Service.

The new service Plan will be a re-shaping of currentservices and will be structured for people who have acurrent Care Plan. The service will provide and arrangeaccess to:• Day Support and Activities• Health Promotion and Healthy Living• Group work and Therapies• Medication Management• Crisis Resolution for people involved with the Service.

The Services developed will be socially inclusive andtailored to a person’s recovery from mental illness andtheir return to good health. The Care ProgrammeApproach (CPA) process of monitoring and review willensure the type and level of day service providedcontinues to properly meet a person’s individual needs.

Pathway works with people with learning disabilities andin some areas with mental health problems referred tothem by the Job Centre or Social Services. Once areferral has been made, Pathway staff meet with theperson to discuss their skills, interests, experience andideas for work.

Pathway staff go out to talk to employers to promotethe benefits of employing young people and adults withlearning disabilities and in some areas with mentalhealth problems and to find work placements.

Pathway staff are also able to discuss benefits andsignpost to the relevant agencies. They support peopleto ensure that they are accessing the most suitableplacements or job, and also provide individual supportwhile learning the job - and on-going support asrequired.

Counsellors are qualified professionals employed bythe Gwent Health Care Trust as part of the PsychologyService. The service is available by referral throughmost GP practices within the county.

If your Doctor considers the service is appropriate toyour needs, referral to the service can be made viamost surgeries within Caerphilly county area.

A leaflet is available outlining the service and self-helpleaflets are available to enable people to understandabout conditions such as depression, anxiety andstress. There is a leaflet which gives contactinformation about local self-help groups, nationalorganisations, and a list of helpful books and usefulweb-site addresses. Leaflets are available from thePrimary Care Counselling Service.

There is a supported housing service for ages 16+ whoare referred from Caerphilly Social Services.

There is also a mentoring service for people aged14 - 25 which can help with building confidence andself-esteem.

This can work in a number of ways, e.g. encouragingand helping young people to start a hobby, join aneducation or employment course, or find a job.
