The airport grew by 3.2 million passengers in 2016/17 (up 8% compared to 2015/16), increasing its share of the London market to 26.4%, against a background of strong competition from other London airports, which collectively added 5.1 million passengers.

Gatwick Airport is an important focus for the South East region’s economic activity and is a major employment site, generating around 24,000 direct on-airport jobs and a further 12,000 airport related jobs in the local area, including Croydon. The airport’s GDP impact in the Gatwick Diamond rises to £2.3bn, when including its supply chain activity, and the wages that its staff (and suppliers’ staff) spend in the wider consumer economy.

The airport-related supply chain also plays an important role in the economic success of the region and Gatwick Airport currently spends around a third of its total procurement spend (£139.4m) with businesses in the local area. Gatwick is involved in a range of activities to support the local economy and local businesses in Croydon, including sponsorship of the Ikea hosted 'Big Breakfast' networking events, the annual Croydon Business Excellence Awards as well as being members of Develop Croydon.

The airport has excellent public transport links including the Gatwick Express. It’s just 14 minutes from East Croydon by train, half an hour to London and half an hour to the south coast.

Gatwick Airport reached a record 45 million passengers in a year for the first time in June 2017 and now offers direct routes to more than 60 long haul destinations across the globe.

Supporting Your Business

A more recent and successful applicant to the fund has been Return2Play, a south Croydon based company. With the dangers of head injuries a hot topic in sport, Return2Play is leading the way in providing professional care via an online concussion management portal. The company was formed by two former Whitgift school pupils to provide a pathway for grassroots rugby players who had suffered concussion, to make a safe return to the sport and avoid long-term damage.

Successful recipients include businesses such as Forgetmenot Adult Centre Ltd, a day centre situated in Addiscombe, for adults with learning disabilities. They provide daily activities and workshops to encourage them to develop educational and social skills that will help improve their independence. They operate from a scout hut that, with the financial support of the Croydon Enterprise Loan Fund, has been refurbished and has a new kitchen, disabled toilets and new heating all of which help the day centre as well as the wider community.

Helping you to access finance Croydon Enterprise Loan FundThe Croydon Enterprise Loan Fund is an enterprise growth programme designed to support businesses in Croydon which have not been able to access or secure conventional finance for their business. Croydon, with its vibrant economy and exciting times to come, is unique amongst the London boroughs, in that it has been operating its own fund dedicated to supporting Croydon based businesses.

The Croydon Enterprise Loan Fund, a Croydon council-led initiative, has spent more than a decade supporting businesses across the borough.

In 2007 Croydon council established a £1 million business loan fund to invest in local business start-ups and growth businesses. Over a decade later, that initial £1 million investment has been re-cycled to the tune of £3.1 million – with over 300 local businesses having received loans ranging from £1,000 to £50,000 – bringing significant and much needed economic benefit to the Croydon economy as well as safeguarding and creating significant numbers of jobs.

traineeships and work experience placements. As a result of long-term relationships with various partners, Croydon Works has established itself as the go-to partner for recruitment.

Don’t take our word for it though, this is what our partners have to say:

“Croydon Works is keen to help “harder to reach” job seekers find employment or better job opportunities and has taken on that objective with commitment and enthusiasm, providing those local to Croydon with opportunities to join in. The ‘Employability Fair’ back in the summer was an ideal opportunity for Gatwick Airport to engage with the Croydon job seeking audience about the Airport’s five-year referencing requirements. Croydon Works has been an energetic promoter of Gatwick Airport jobs and encouraging candidates to get their five-year history (education, employment and any unemployment) details together.”

Lisa (Recruitment Manager) at Gatwick Airport Ltd

“Boxpark appointed Croydon Works to help organise a recruitment fair on site. The core focus was to provide an opportunity for Croydon residents to be given an opportunity to apply for jobs at Boxpark. Despite only providing two weeks’ notice Croydon Works were able to effectively manage and run the event and provided help on the day. We had a total of 130 attendees and a total of 55 job roles

to find sustainable, quality jobs locally. This innovative job-brokerage service is delivered by the council in partnership with Croydon College and the Department for Work and Pensions.

More than 23,000 jobs will be created in Croydon over the next five to seven years as a result of the billions of pounds of investment in regeneration that is currently under way. Those jobs are in addition to others in the immediate travel-to-work area as far as, and including, Gatwick.

The service works to support the council’s Croydon Promise – Growth for All, the commitment to residents, investors, developers and businesses that it will do all it can to deliver growth that is inclusive and sustainable for everybody. The commitment promises to support Croydon residents, young and old, into employment, and to raise their skills so that they can access the new jobs being created across the borough.

For the borough’s employers, Croydon Works provides a free-to-use, professional recruitment service, offering tailored training, pre-screened candidates and recruitment events, to ensure that employers can find the staff they need locally. This is completely free and bespoke to each individual employer – a wonderful benefit to our business community.

We understand that working with local businesses is key to maximising the positive outcomes that we achieve through our commercial activity. We are keen to increase the number of local suppliers the council and our partners work with.

Spending public money is regulated by legislation from Government and the European Union, but Croydon has also made a clear commitment to ensure everything that we buy generates as much local value and business growth as possible.

There are key policies and principles that govern the way Croydon council does business. The page overleaf sets

out the council’s approach to procuring services, works and goods, and provides some useful information for suppliers wanting to work with the council.

Council’s buying thresholds Depending on the service that Croydon council intends to purchase from any supplier, there are four specific thresholds operated by Croydon. The table overleaf

The selected quote must represent best value for money. The tender opportunity does not need to be formally advertised but officers may do so using the council’s public website and the government supplier portal Contracts Finder website. Other places to find out about council’s business opportunities To find further information on council’s Procurement, Contracts and Tenders visit www.croydon.gov.uk/business/tenders but to tender for any opportunities you will need to be registered on the London Tenders Portal.

For some minor building works contracts we use Constructionline to select suitable suppliers, so it is advised that you also register with Constructionline. www.constructionline.co.uk

Commissioning and working with third sector and Small businessesThe council is committed to supporting the local SME and third sector in Croydon as we truly value the role played by these organisations in building a thriving local economy and creating a real sense of community.

We understand that meeting the requirements of a commissioning exercise can be demanding and, for smaller organisations with limited capacity, it can at times feel as if there are unnecessary barriers to participation.

This is why we have made a commitment to working with local voluntary and community organisations, charities, social enterprises and small businesses to help them better understand our commissioning approach and develop the skills and resources necessary to meet the requirements of a commissioning process.

Some of the ways we aim to help our local providers to successfully compete is running targeted commissioning support sessions, engagement exercises or events that introduce large council contractors to the local market. Those aim to help familiarise local organisations with buying processes and standards and to promote existing opportunities.

n the primary account holder can add/create other user accounts and specify their role, choosing if they can apply for opportunities on behalf of the organisation or simply monitor and input information on opportunities and contracts

n additional contacts can be added to an account, but these will simply relate to receiving notifications relating to opportunities relevant to the organisation

Council tender opportunities are advertised and managed through the London Tenders Portal because using the portal enables us to ensure everybody receives the same information about opportunities and clarifications, at the same time. It also means that it is easier for suppliers to do business with the council as it eliminates repetitiveness by allowing bidders to save their details on the site and reuse basic information for future bids.

The council uses the London Tenders Portal to undertake formal tendering but also intends to use it to get quotes from providers for low value spend. Therefore we advise all potential providers interested in council’s opportunities to sign up to the portal. On occasions we also advertise Market Warming Events on the portal.

If you have any difficulties with registering on the portal or want to know more about the portal, please go to https://procontract.due-north.com/ or email [email protected]

Quick Quotes - low value spendThe council is piloting and beginning to roll out purchasing for contracts with a value of more than £5,000 and less than £25,000 through the London Tenders Portal, using Quick Quote functionality.

Quick Quotes are used for lower value contracts and enabling this functionality means that once suppliers register on the London Tenders portal, they will have the opportunity to provide the council with quotes through a simplified bidding process. Council staff will have to select at least one local supplier for every opportunity we put through the portal, meaning local suppliers will have the chance to bid for all the goods and services the council buys.

Accessing council’s business opportunitiesTo take part in any tender from Croydon council and to be able to express an interest in a contract opportunity, first you must register on the London Tenders Portal with details of yourself and also the company that you work for. www.londontenders.org

Registering for an account with the London Tenders Portal is free and easy, and will also ensure that the council is aware of your business’ interest in becoming a supplier. Numerous London Boroughs and organisations also use the London Tenders Portal and registering will ensure that you receive notifications of any relevant opportunity.

London Tenders PortalBelow are the key steps to consider when registering for London Tenders Portal:

n The entire process is completely free of charge to access and be a part of

n when registering for the first time, you will be the primary account holder for your organisation if it’s not registered on the Portal yet

n the only mandatory information to provide is marked by*

n the email address that you will use will be where all notifications of new opportunities will be received, so consider using a generic email address of the organisation so that more than one employee can have sight of it and ensure no relevant opportunity is missed in your absence

n make sure you select all relevant categories (CPV codes) to your organization (if you are unsure, it’s still possible to select more categories later), as your selection will define what opportunities you are notified about

n in the area notifications screen, you can select a specific council such as ours, or a wider region if your business covers an area wider than one specific borough

Third sector organisations, charities and social enterprises often have elements of social value hard-wired in them which can give them a competitive advantage when social value is assessed as part of a bid.

Just Be Croydon is a website for all Croydon residents and businesses. It has been designed to help you take positive steps towards becoming a happier and healthier YOU.

Live Well - Just BeHelping You Create a Healthy Happy Workforce

CASE STUDY

Karen, 53 found the JustBe website through a workplace promotion. She already had many positive health behaviours; regular gym classes, at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day and she was a non-smoker. Her main motivation to joining the Just Live Well programme was to lose weight, improve her relationship with food and improve her mental wellbeing. During her initial appointment she and her Live Well Advisor discussed her history of dieting, the emotional connection she had with food and how this impacted her mental wellbeing. Together they explored her food triggers and the foods that she reached for at low moments such as crisps and cakes. Through motivational interviewing with the Advisor, healthy alternatives were discussed and an action plan was agreed which included Karen keeping a “food and mood diary” to help her identify what were her triggers that had her reaching for less than healthy foods.

At her 6 week drop-in session Karen had already seen a decrease in her weight and had a greater awareness around her food & mood triggers - she had also started to increase her walking and said she felt she was heading in the right direction.

When Karen came back for her 3 month follow up appointment she had lost an impressive 10kg and had even signed up for a lengthy walk for charity to keep up with her good work. She was delighted to see an increase in her mental wellbeing score and stated that she felt more positive than she did at the beginning of her journey. To continue on her weight loss and wellbeing journey she has set further weight loss goals and adding more variation to her keep fit classes to keep her interest. We look forward to seeing her results at her 6-month appointment.

For some residents there is also a 12-month face to face support service called Just Live Well. To find out if you are eligible for this service you can take the Health MOT found on the website. This can be found on the top right hand side of each page.

If you have any problems accessing the website or would just like a chat with one of the Advisors you can find them at one of our weekly Health Hubs across the borough.
