Gainesville serves as the cultural, educational and commercial center for the North Central Florida region.

Gainesville is known for its preservation of historic buildings and the beauty of its natural surroundings at its numerous parks, museums and lakes including Lake Wauburg and Morningside Nature Center.

The median household income in Gainesville is $31,426.

The University of Florida is Floridas largest and oldest university and the fourth-largest university in the United States.

Gainesvilles first inhabitants were the Timucua Indians, a Native American tribe that no longer exists today.

Gatorade, the first sports drink, was created by Robert Cade, Harry James Free and Dana Shires at the University of Florida in 1965 for the schools football team and was named after the universitys mascot, Gator Dan.

Gainesville is an important way station for travelers because it is located midway between Atlanta and Miami five hours from Miami and five from Atlanta.

All of the counties surrounding Alachua County vote heavily Republican, while Gainesville votes strongly Democratic.

Gainesville averages 2,800 hours of sunshine annually!

The city of Gainesville was at one time known as Hogtown, for the creek that ran through the town.

The median age in Gainesville is 27.

The estimated number of households in Gainesville is 87,509.

Gainesville was ultimately named for Gen. Edmund Pendleton Gaines, an Army commander during the Second Seminole War and the captor of Aaron Burr.

Gainesville was the scene of small-scale fighting in the Civil War. On February 15, 1864, a skirmish erupted when about 50 Union troops entered the city intending to capture two trains.

The Battle of Gainesville took place on August 17, 1864. Three hundred Union troops occupying the city were attacked by the Florida Cavalry, driven out of town and suffered significant casualties.

Gainesville was chosen in 1905 as the site for the University of Florida, beating out other cities such as Lake City and Bartow, thanks to the construction of modern municipal water, sewer and electric system.

The first classes at the University of Florida were held at Buckman Hall in the fall of 1906.

To the northwest of Gainesville is Devils Millhopper State Geological site, a 60-acre park best known for the huge chasm, about 500 feet wide and over 100 feet deep, that formed from the collapse of an underground cavern.

UF consistently ranks among the top 10 universities in licensing, which includes the glaucoma drug Trusopt, the sports drink Gatorade, and the Sentricon termite elimination system.

Gainesville is ranked number one in the second edition of Cities Ranked and Rated, though it did not even reach the top 50 in the 2004 edition.

Gainesville was ranked the most technologically advanced city in Florida, 30th in the nation, in 2005.

Gainesville is the location of the independent label No Idea Records and the annual underground rock festival known as The Fest, which is co-operated by No Idea.

The University of Florida first opened in 1906 with just over 100 students. Enrollment is now more than 46,000, and its campus sprawls across 2,000 acres.

On January 6, 1853, Florida Governor Thomas Brown signed the bill that provided public support to higher education. East Florida Seminary in Ocala is one of the first schools to use this funding, but it soon closed due to the Civil War. In 1866, EFS reopened in Gainesville, beginning a 150-year journey to become one of the largest, most prestigious schools in the world.

Famous UF alumni include two current NASA astronauts, several presidents of the American Bar Association (more ABA presidents have come from the Levin College of Law than any other U.S. law school), and a myriad of celebrities.

Nine UF alumni now serve in the U.S. Congress something no other school can boast.

UF began a partnership with Spain in 2000 to create the worlds largest telescope in the Canary Islands. The telescope saw its first light on Saturday, July 14, 2007.

Buddy UpRemember elementary school and the buddy system? If youll be out after dark, its always best to walk with a friend.

Dont Wear HeadphonesYou need all your senses working when youre moving around campus or the community. Save the headphones for the dorm room or gym. Use your eyes, ears, and common sense to keep you safe when walking, biking, etc.

SNAP The Student Nighttime Auxiliary Patrol or SNAP is available to escort students who are walking alone on campus. SNAP vans also are available for rides along designated routes. To arrange for free SNAP assistance, log in to GatorLink or call 352 392 7627.

Park in Designated AreasPark your vehicle in well lit campus parking lots. Park only where permitted to avoid towing.

Know the Signs of Stalking and HarassmentSome behaviors are not okay. If an individual makes you uncomfortable or wont leave you alone, distance yourself from that person. If you feel threatened at any time, contact campus police at 352-392-1111.

Know Your Hurricane & Storm SafetyHurricane season can impact the Gainesville community. Prepare in advance and know what to do in the event of a hurricane or other inclement weather. Monitor the UF website and local weather stations for specific instructions when storms are approaching.
