toys for totsWe had a wonderful turnout for this event with 48 members taking part

in our annual toy’s for tot’s Charity tournament. We would like to thank

all members that took part in this event and also those who donated

toys for the holiday season. members played a foursome scramble

format on the Watson course. the results were very close within the

field and there were many ties but the team of mike Payne, Jim staskiel,

Don Harding and Don rafferty took the outright lead.

Reunion CupWe had 8 teams take part in this year’s reunion Cup where 3 members

were paired up with a reunion employee. to make things even more

difficult the event was played on the nicklaus course. incredibly there

were only 3 shots separating first and last place but it was the team of

mark and sue Greenstein with employee Wilke Hopkins that took the

lead that day on a scorecard play off with team bob and Helen eichorn,

Chris Clausen and superintendent tray maltby.

Ron: i know you are the designer of the frankly frog putter and a putting coach and i need some information about putters and green speed. A friend told me that on slow greens you should use a heavy putter and on fast greens use a lighter putter. What is your opinion? Frank: Yes, i have helped numerous golfers with their putting strokes and this in combination with the frog Putter has resulted in many very happy customers who are now enjoying their time on the green, are confident and have been able to lower their handicap as a result. there has been some speculation that one needs a heavier putter than normal for slower greens. in addition, some golfers have suggested that you make contact on the toe of the putter face or use a light putter for fast greens or down hill putts. i disagree with both of these notions for the following reasons:first, it is important to groove your putting stroke to be as consistent as you possibly can. Consistency is of utmost importance in putting. to be consistent you must not add an additional variable by changing the instrument for different course conditions. for a slow green, the ball must be launched a little faster than for a fast green for the same length putt. this difference should be established on the practice putting green which should be similar in speed to the greens on the course. it does not make sense to get out a stimpmeter -- (see the birth of the stimpmeter at http://franklygolf.com/stimpmeter.aspx) -- on the practice green and then make a decision as to which of several putters you are going to select for that particular range of green speeds. second, making contact with ball on the toe of the putter-face, for fast greens, again introduces another variable

leading to inconsistencies – how far toward the toe will you strike it and for what green speed or down slope? the difference between a slow and a fast green, independent of the putter you intend to use, is that the faster green will have more break than the slower green for the same side-hill slope, and you must launch the ball faster for the slower green than a faster green for a specific length putt.

the speed of the putter head for a specific

length putt is a judgment call based on your experience and pre-shot plan and routine. this will be different for every putt, so why try to complicate this further by introducing another variable by using a different putter

for every green speed or missing the sweet spot intentionally for down hill putts or faster

greens?

ron, i hope this has helped.if you want to improve your putting come and visit the Putting PAD.

1. Favorite golf course? i love the old traditional courses in the northeast part of the us. they are known for their narrow fairways and small greens. they usually put an emphasis on accuracy and distance control, but i’m also a big fan of Links Courses. one of my favorite courses in the world is turnberry, in scotland. every day is different and you could literally experience all four seasons in one round.

2. Favorite golf hole? i have had the opportunity to play many great golf holes through the years. it’s hard to pick one, but if i had to i would say the par 4 9th hold at turnberry. this is an amazing setting for a links hole. the tee is set around rocks so your tee shot must carry 200 yards over rocks, sea and beach. there is a lighthouse to the left and a precise approach shot is necessary to the green that has the ocean in the background. Love it on any day!

3. Lowest round? my lowest round as a professional is, of course, when i shot a 59 in 2001. However, i can remember the days i broke 90 for the first time, then 80, then 70 and then march 16, 2001 60.

4. How did you get introduced to the game of golf? my parents played golf a lot when i was growing up and the course was just about five minutes away from our house. my sister, Charlotta, and i would join them on the course. We would always get ice cream as we made the turn and rode the pull carts pretending they were horses. that was definitely a highlight!

5. Best Golf snack? As a competitive golfer, i was always sure to have nutritious meals the night before a tournament. i wanted food that will hold me over and give me the energy i would need to perform at my best. throughout the day on the course, i liked to eat bananas, raisins, maybe a protein shake and drink lots of water. i still eat snacks like this, even though i am not playing competitively anymore.

6. Dream foursome? one day my favorite foursome will be my

family Ava, Will, and mike, but for now...Jack Welch (business tips), madonna (can she sing on the course?) and brad Pitt (it may be a long day with the other two so i would need something good to see...sorry mike).

7. Favorite tournament to watch? i love watching the majors, especially the us open. it’s mostly played on a traditional course and i love the history of the Championship. the Women’s open was my favorite tournament to play and every time i watch that event it brings back some wonderful memories.

8. My favorite golf shot? my best golf shot was the tee-shot at the Colonial in 2003. i’ll never forget that moment and that shot. i have never been so nervous before.

9. What is something we might not know about you? A favorite memory of mine is playing golf growing up in my home course bro balsta, just outside stockholm. i have so many wonderful memories from playing there and love going back every time i go back to sweden. the people are still wonderful to us. i always think back to diving for balls in the ponds or hitting balls with the other kids. that is also where my dad told me “there are no shortcuts to success.”

Whether you play singles or doubles, the drop shot will be very useful. the drop shot is one of the most under used weapons there is. You can use it to set your opponent up for the lob or to even finish off a point with some touch; either way we have to follow these few tips in order to hit this shot consistently.

the first and most important thing to remember is that you just can’t hit a good drop shot from anywhere in the court. You must be at least standing in the middle of “no-man’s-land.”

now the execution: make sure you are approaching this shot with a volley grip (Continental), not your ground-stroke grip. move toward the ball with your racket head above your hand and with no backswing. once you reach your hitting location, push your hand forward with a firm wrist and you will see the ball simply float over.one common mistake that a club player will make is to try and get the drop shot to travel over the net as low as possible. there are two reasons why this is not correct; number one your chances of missing in the net just greatly increased, number two is that if the ball does go over, it will be going deeper in the court making it much easier for your opponent to run down. the perfect height is 1-2 feet over the net, making the second bounce much closer to the net.

one last tip is to stay low; too many people stiffen up when trying to hit the drop shot. You need to keep your knees bent and push the ball with a slightly open racket face.

if you keep these few tips in your pocket, you will have a new weapon to break your opponent down.
