Hello year 2I hope you are well and keeping safe. Here is an RE project on the topic of Pentecost to complete over the next few weeks. Rather than doing worksheets or lots of writing I’ve tried to make the tasks as fun and creative as I can while you are learning at home. It would be fantastic if you can

ask a grown up to take pictures of the work you have done and email them to me.

Task 1 - I can talk about my experiences of passing on and receiving messages.

Read the following story about Snowy the cat going missing.

Pentecost project

Now chat about these questions with a family member:

What is easy about passing messages? What can be difficult? How do some messages make us feel? Does it make a difference how messages are passed? How did Lucy’s family pass on the message about Snowy? Who did they tell? What else could they have done to send this message? Why was it important to spread the message that Snowy had returned?

Play a game of Chinese whispers with your family – can you send the correct message on without it changing?

Think about different messages that you might need to send to people – what might be the best way to send it on? E.g. letters, texts, video message, telephone calls, emails.

Task 2 - Jesus is risen Read the story of the Resurrection:

Page 3: Gathering · Web viewCreate your own puppets and use them to retell the story of the resurrection. You might want to make some props too.If you like – instead of creating puppets,

Think and have a chat about:

How do you think the women were feeling? What was the message the men gave to the women? What had Jesus told them to remember? How do you think the eleven disciples felt when they heard

the news from the women?

Create your own puppets and use them to retell the story of the resurrection. You might want to make some props too. If you like – instead of creating puppets, you and your family could re-enact the story yourselves through a bit of role play.

I would love to see photos or videos of this if you do it!

Task 3 - L.O – Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit.

Think and have a chat about:

Who did Jesus return to? What did He promise to do for His friends? What was their new friend called? Can you name some of the ways that the Holy Spirit helped

the friends of Jesus? How do you think Jesus’ friends felt when he gave them the

news of the Holy Spirit? How do you think the Holy Spirit helps us?

Thinking about the last question – How do you think the Holy Spirit helps us?Draw a picture or find a photo of yourself when you think that the Holy Spirit has been there for you. Write down a sentence to go with that picture to explain how the Holy Spirit is helping you. The Holy Spirit helps/helped me when… e.g. giving you courage and confidence, guiding you to do the right thing – helping, sharing, giving, loving.

Task 4 – I can recognise the story of the Ascension.

The Ascension is when Jesus joins his Father in Heaven and it takes place 40 days after Jesus’ resurrection at Easter. He appears to the disciples many times in this period.

Watch what happens in the video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH-N6Erg5XwAnd read the Gospel:The disciples went with Jesus to Bethany, just outside Jerusalem. He told them that they had to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came. As Jesus was blessing his disciples, he left them and returned to his Father in Heaven. His disciples praised Jesus and went back to Jerusalem filled with great joy and spent their time praying as they waited for the Holy Spirit.

Based on Luke 24:48-52.

Think and have a chat about:

Can you remember what was promised to the disciples? How do you think the disciples felt when Jesus blessed

them? How do you think they felt when Jesus was taken from

them? Where was Jesus going? What do Christians do to remember the Ascension of Jesus

into Heaven?

You may want to go straight onto Task 5 as it is a continuation of the story and has a fun activity for you – or if you’ve had enough for today that is fine, you can come back to it!

Task 5 – I can retell the Ascension. For a bit of fun, now watch the Lego version which explains why The Ascension is an important event to Christians today:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnRJa4cZQIE

Page 6: Gathering · Web viewCreate your own puppets and use them to retell the story of the resurrection. You might want to make some props too.If you like – instead of creating puppets,

Task: Using Lego or playmobil (or whatever figures you have available) create your own Ascension of Jesus scene (the picture shows an example of The Last Supper scene) and act it out. Perhaps you could make your own cloud using cotton wool.• Think about the different characters.• Think about the words Jesus said – can you use the religious words he spoke?• Can you say which part you like best?I would love to see photos of you re-enacting The Ascension. Perhaps you could label who the characters are or add a speech bubble to show what Jesus said.

Task 6 L.O – To recognise and retell the story of Pentecost.

After Jesus ascended into Heaven the apostles were waiting to receive the Holy Spirit because that's what Jesus told them would happen.  The Holy Spirit would help bring them closer to God. This is what we celebrate at Pentecost, which occurs 50 days after Easter Sunday.

Stop and Think!Have a chat about the following questions:

How did the friends feel after Jesus had gone back to His Father? Have you ever felt like this? What happened on Pentecost day? What did the friends do? How do you think they felt then? How did they make other people feel? How might we spread the word about the Good News of Jesus?

Main task: Thinking about both the Ascension and Pentecost day –

How are the events different to each other? How did the disciples feel in both events? What colours could you choose to represent the different

emotions that the disciples felt? What colours make you feel happy/sad?

Using the separate document attached on the website, named ‘Ascension and Pentecost’ – Can you use paint, coloured pencil or felt tips to create artwork to show how the disciples felt during both of these times. I have included a range of artwork from both of the events to give you some ideas – if you want to do your own version without using the template I have given you, that is great. Don’t forget to include any symbols of the Holy Spirit – wind, flames, dove.

If you want more – you can write the story to match each of your pieces of artwork.

Task 8 – Sharing Good News.

We could all do with more good news in our lives right now. Can you think of some Good News that has happened to you? Something fantastic that you just wanted everyone to know! Something that made everything feel better? It might be something that you thought was lost being found. Or was it the birth of a new family member? Did a pet go missing and then return?

Draw your own speech bubble and write your Good News in it. It could be from today, last month or last year even! Decorate it as colourfully as you can.

Task 9 – Spreading the Word by our lives.

Page 8: Gathering · Web viewCreate your own puppets and use them to retell the story of the resurrection. You might want to make some props too.If you like – instead of creating puppets,

Read St Pauls letter to Christians in Rome – explain how it was encouraging because it was a difficult time for them.

Sometimes hard to do the right thing but as Christians we must aim to do the right thing and we can ask for help from the Holy Spirit and pass on the Good News through our kindness and our goodness. Do we know of any examples of people who show us how to live like Jesus wants us to? This might be people in our family, community or around the world. What do they do?How is this showing a good example of God’s love and carrying Jesus’ message on?

Main task – Create a banner by decorating letters that say:

Go tell everyone the Good News!Decorate around your banner with pictures and colours that remind you of Pentecost day.

When you are finished pray together the following prayer to the Holy Spirit:

Page 9: Gathering · Web viewCreate your own puppets and use them to retell the story of the resurrection. You might want to make some props too.If you like – instead of creating puppets,

As a little extra why don’t you plan your own celebration, using your banner? You can practise now and then do it again on the 31st May if you wish.

Ask a grown up to help you make Pentecost cupcakes (see ideas)

Dress in yellow or red and have a Pentecost picnic in your garden.Don’t forget to send the photos!

Liturgy Time As we end this Pentecost topic, now is a perfect time for quiet reflection and prayer. You have worked hard!

Ask your family members to join in with this liturgy.Act of Worship

During this Easter season we specially remember especially that Jesus rose from the dead. After Jesus’ Resurrection, he told his friends, that they would not be left alone. He said, ‘You will receive the power of the Holy Spirit’.And so let us pray a special prayer to the Holy Spirit.Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and we shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth.Reader: We have been reflecting on the energy of wind and fire. The children may share any work done.’Each year at Pentecost, Christians remember and celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the new energy, the new power that he gives to the friends of Jesus.

Leader: Mary and the apostles were in Jerusalem living quietlytogether. They were uncertain as to what to do but wait. There were lots of people in the city at that time because it was the Jewish feast of Pentecost, that is thanksgiving for the harvest. This is what happened next…

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles

When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong and powerful wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak. There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited, because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages. In amazement and wonder they exclaimed, ‘These people who are talking like this are Galileans! How is it, then, that all of us hear them speaking in our own native languages? We are from many different countries yet all of us hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things that God has done!’Amazed and confused, they kept asking one another,‘What does this mean?’ But others made fun of the believers, saying, ‘These people are drunk!’Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles and in a loud voice began to speak to the crowd:‘Fellow-Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me and let me tell you what this means. These people are not drunk, they are filled with God’s Holy Spirit. Instead, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about: God says:‘I will pour out my Spirit on everyone and they will proclaim my message.’Awe and wonder came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Leader: The Good News of God’s love and power spread like sparks from a fire and warmed the people’s hearts towards God

and one another. The people who were watching were astonished when they saw how much the apostles loved one another. The Holy Spirit inspired a new way of living.

Children may share any work done – particularly on the gifts of the Holy Spirit
