Southern Arts Society and Kings Mountain Gateway Trail
“ TRAIL” Photo Competition 2016
This is the second annual TRAIL Photography Competition sponsored by the KingsMountain Gateway Trail and Southern Arts Society. Photos submitted must have beentaken on the Gateway Trail in the past two years. Judge for this show was JoeCiarlante, who has owned and operated Ciarlante Photography in Charlotte since 1985.Mr. Ciarlante has undergraduate and graduate degrees in photography and for the pastseven years has been a full-time photography instructor at The Art Institute of Charlotte.
Judge: Joe Ciarlante
Joe Ciarlante has owned and operated Ciarlante Photography in Charlotte since 1985. He has
undergraduate and graduate degrees in photography and for the past seven years has been a
full-time photography instructor at The Art Institute of Charlotte.
Education: The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, MFA; the Tyler School of Art, Temple
University, BFA.
Experience: 30 years as a commercial photographer, specializing in architectural photography.
As an educator, he has taught advanced photography classes at the Art Institute of Charlotte,
NC, UNC Charlotte, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC and Northwestern University in Chicago.
Awards: with judge’s comments in quotat ions
First Place $75 – #29 Edy Bergstrom “Babbling Silence”
“Great low angle perspective and beautiful use of slow shutter speed to show motion.”
Second Place $50 –#13 Ellen Devenny “Star Magnolia”
“The soft light, use of focus and short depth of field all work together to make this
beautiful image.”
Third Place $25 – #9 Amy Arnoldt “0.9” “Bold use of color and composition”
Honorable Mentions: (ribbons)
