FROM WHERE I SIT ....
Together with almost 100 others, I attended the 2019
Northumberland Celebration of Village Halls on a glorious
sunny but frosty day in Stannington Village Hall. What a
great inspiring event.
There are over 180 village halls in Northumberland,
including 20 Warm Hubs. Seahouses Hub is our equivalent
of a village hall and the monthly Fish and Chips Lunch
(organised by Seahouses Rotary) has been designated a
Warm Hub. I had lunch with Lynne and Angela,
representing Beadnell WI Hall, and read a copy of the fas-
cinating booklet “The history of the WI in Beadnell”.
Julia Plinston talked about the birth of Community Action
Northumberland in 1951 and their initial concentration on
village halls, announcing the launch of a Heritage Project
in collaboration with Northumberland Archives to ensure
that the tons of information about village halls is stored
and made available in a variety of ways.
After lots of networking and nattering, Ian McMillan (Radio
3 Presenter, Poet and Village Halls National Ambassador)
gave an hilarious talk and, with the help of the audience,
created a special poem.
The terrific conclusion, announced by Louise Curry before
lunch, was a £420,000.00 grant to Community Action
Northumberland from the National Lottery, to be
distributed to eleven village halls in Northumberland. Wow!
Kelvin Rushworth
Rockliffe, St Aidans December 2018
May I offer a huge thank you to all Jean’s relatives, locals and
friends, who knew her so well, and sent good wishes to myself,
Elizabeth, Judith and Jean’s sister, Gillian.
Initially, my thanks go to our local First Responder Martin
Spruce for his exceptionally speedy arrival after 999, the
ambulance crew in attendance, Martin and Agga, and the two
helpful policemen from Berwick.
I am also indebted to Deacon Jackie for such a truly
understanding Service, to Jean’s family friend, organist Harry
Hanvey, to Alan Haile and his funeral team for, as always, a
perfectly directed funeral, to the RNLI team who turned out “on
parade”; finally, but not least, all the past and present staff at the
Ship who knew her so well and meant so much to her.
I regret, out of pure ignorance, not being able to reply to Internet
emails and texts, but thank you anyway!
Further to my letter above, the Funeral collection amounted to
an extremely generous total of £1,200.
As indicated on the service sheet, the monies will be donated to:

Thank you all for your splendid largesse.

BAMBURGH WI REPORT
Bamburgh WI held their first meeting of 2019 on the 9th January, Christine Hutchinson welcomed everyone including one new member. County events in the future include a Pamper Evening, a Craft Day, Speaking with Confidence Workshop, Easter around the World and Carpet Bowls. We had also received an invitation from North Sunderland/Seahouses WI’s 95th Birthday. Our own events during January are a Programme Planning Meeting, a Quiz Night and our monthly lunch group. We are also hoping to organise a visit to Peebles in the Spring. We did not have a speaker for this meeting so we held a Members Afternoon. The format was a “Story to Tell” and several members had a few tales to relate. These included a lost piglet, a piece of coal, several tales of loos around the world. There was also funny tales (and sad ones) from retired teachers in our group. Tea was very welcome afterwards. The next meeting will be at 2pm in Bamburgh Pavilion on Wednesday, 13th February, when Ian Wilkinson will give a talk on his naval exploits. A warm welcome is given to all visitors.
Beadnell WI
Having enjoyed an autumn programme and become informed about the work of a naval attache in Moscow, what it is like to be a driving instructor and how to train collie dogs to do their work, Beadnell members finished 2018 with a convivial Christmas meal. The new year is going to be fun for us. In January we are to have a Members’ Night based on the theme of food – a favourite subject for many of us! That will be followed in February by a session on Days out with a Camera led by by Sue Dawson, one of our members. As ever, a pooled supper will be incorporated into our meetings. We always meet on the second Thursday of each month at 7.00pm in our institute hall. Please come along if you would like to join in the fun.
NORTH SUNDERLAND PARISH COUNCIL
Improvements and more spaces in Seahouses Main Car Park
The present work in the car park will be completed before
Easter and will offer:
Additional spaces for vehicles
a total of 177
Larger bases for camper vans
Bays clearly marked out
New drainage in the top car park
to ensure excess water flows away
efficiently
Northumberland County Council have
arranged and funded this work to en-
sure
Seahouses is better equipped to offer residents easier
parking. With additional space, tourists will be able to park
their vehicles and go off to explore and enjoy the delights
of the beaches, the harbour and all the village has to
offer.
BELFORD MUSEUM NEWS
During January, we have been busy at the Museum, redecorating the Front Room, preparing new exhibitions on the Greenwich Estate Mills at Spindlestone and Waren, and on the Belford Area men who became Japanese Prisoners of War after the fall of Singapore in 1942. We are also updating our interactive system and hope to have the catalogue for the Resource Area complete by our reopening on 1 February - still the same hours - winter 10.00 - 4.00pm daily, admission free. On the weekend of 16/17 February, to encourage you all to come and see our changes and explore our resources, we are having a special Open Weekend. Then there will also be an opportunity to see Brian Rogers’ award winning photographic presentation ‘A Northumberland Farm’ which was shot at West Hall Farm in 2010. We hope to see you sometime over that weekend.
The village had a surprise visitor when Princess Anne dropped in by helicopter to
see George and Ailsa Shiel and pop across to the Longstone lighthouse! George
runs the Golden Gate, the only boat allowed to land on Longstone and Princess
Anne is a keen Pharologist which is why she requested to visit Longstone
Lighthouse along with the celebration of Grace Darling.
She became an Elder Brother in 2004 and was elected The Master of Trinity House
in May 2011. HRH Princess Anne is also a proficient and keen sailor having taken
part in many competitions and was talking to George about her sailing and his own
experiences.
You can see pictures of the visit on the Golden Gate’s website at
www.discoverthefarneislands.co.uk

CHRISTMAS DAY LUNCHES 2018
The friends of St. Paul’s would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to
the team of volunteers who combined to make the Christmas Day
lunch deliveries (around Beadnell, Seahouses/North Sunderland
and Bamburgh) possible once again. The warm hearted response
from everybody involved was greatly appreciated and this year
more lunches than ever went out, or were eaten in with some of
the helpers. We also received more donations, contributions and
gifts of food whilst the offer of drivers and kitchen helpers was
truly amazing, not only on Christmas Day but also for preparations
on Christmas Eve and for Boxing Day visits. New friends came to
assist alongside those regular faces who are always there to lend
a hand. We have already received welcome offers of help for
Christmas 2019.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
The Mobile Library will be in the car park at Seahouses Hub
on the following dates:
SATURDAYS 9.45AM – 11.45AM
February 23rd
March 9th
and 23rd
It’s all been quiet on the Skiffing front for the Bamburgh & Beadnell CRC apart
from an alternative Christmas party with a row from Amble up the river to
Warkworth and back again at the beginning of December. It was a brilliant day out
and as you can see well attended by other local clubs.
Grace Darling is in dry dock at the moment for its annual maintenance but we look
forward to getting her out on the water very soon.
At the time of printing this article, the BBCRC Annual General Meeting is due to
take place on Tuesday 29th January with a packed Agenda and hopefully some
exciting new initiatives to announce.
If you are interested in finding out more about this Club, please feel free to contact
me on [email protected]. This is a club for the community
and all ages, abilities and levels of interest of welcome.

2019
The Beadnell Community Volunteers AGM took place on
16th January 2019 at the Craster Arms when we were
delighted to report another successful year of fundraising
and awards!
The meeting started with a change of Chairman for the BCV. Gordon
Brown has retired as Chairman; the post he’s held since the group was
first formed in 2012. To formally thank him for all his hard work and
abiding commitment, the committee presented him with a framed
drawing of St. Ebba’s Church, originally drawn by Jen Hall’s father the
then proprietor of Beadnell Towers. Gordon and Joan were outbid at a
recent Auction held by the BCV for a similar picture so they were
particularly thrilled with this.
For your information, the newly elected Chairman is
Peter Jenkinson, with Colin Brunt continuing as Treasurer
and now Katie Archer as the new Secretary.
Christmas seems like a long time ago now, but we do hope you enjoyed
our display of lights. The event was attended by a record number of
adults and children with standing room only at St. Ebba’s Church, then
a visit from Santa Claus followed by the “Village Voices” entertaining
everyone at the Beadnell WI Hall while they drank mulled wine and
enjoyed some homemade soup.
As expected not a lot has happened during January as far
as gardening is concerned. Apart from the daffodils getting
it wrong and sprouting too early due to the beautiful sunny
and warm winter days we’ve experienced. Let’s hope we
don’t have another Beast from the East to cover them all up
with snow!

Hello and a belated Happy New Year to everyone, from Bamburgh
Castle! We are starting the New Season determined to make contact
with all local residents, as well of course with our welcome visitors.
We hope you may like a flavor of what’s happening this season at the
Castle, now under new management, with the Watson-Armstrong
family playing an increasing hands on role. We hope through Village
News, to keep you in touch as the season progresses.
This is the 125th Anniversary of the first Lord Armstrong buying the
Castle in 1894. So, although our history goes back to Anglo Saxon
days, and earlier, we will focus on the Armstrong story at the Castle
this year. Next year will have a different historical focus. We will be
offering illustrated Talks on the 4 Lord Armstrongs, and today’s
family; we have a new Book to celebrate. If you visit the Castle, you
may even meet Lord Armstrong in person...! And we are happy to
arrange for Talks to local Groups, if you would like someone to tell
your organization more about the Armstrong era. Just get in touch...
Changes are happening here; we are about to throw open the Castle
grounds to dog lovers and their canine companions as of the 1st April.
We are introducing a new Local Friends/Membership scheme for
local residents-watch this space for further details. For young visitors
we are introducing miniature pony trap rides and how to care for a
pony along with Lego workshops and open air cinema concerts to
name but a few of the different events happening here.
We do hope that you, as well as our Visitors, will visit our Castle this
season for more details about events our website can be found

SEAHOUSES OUTDOOR BOWLS CLUB
8 STEPS FORWARD – 7 STEPS BACK!
We were very pleased to have gained 8 new members in 2017
but, alas, we lost 7 members last year due to ill health or
moving away, thereby reducing our total to 23. We are
therefore urgently looking for more members again, still with a
target of 50 members if possible, to ensure the long term future
of the club.
So, if you were ever considering playing flat green bowls,
PLEASE GIVE IT A TRY THIS YEAR.
The new season starts on Saturday 20th April 2019 and all
prospective new members are allowed THREE FREE 2 HOUR
TASTER SESSIONS on weekday afternoons or evenings
(2 – 4:30 & 6:30 – dusk) or at weekends by prior arrangement.
ALL EQUIPMENT PROVIDED and don’t worry if you’ve never
played before.
For any further information, please contact Steve Clement, on
01665 721203 or have a chat with Stephen Keay in Cubby’s.
FUND RAISING EVENTS THIS YEAR
We are trying to raise funds for a suitable structure to provide a
changing room/bad weather viewing facility as we no longer
have the use of our previous locker room in the Hub.

agreed) in late July at Seahouses Hub. 9am to 12 noon.
