With schools in our association dating back morethan 600 years there is no shortage of experiencein dealing with the learning needs of generationsof students. It is indeed the strengths of individualschools that contribute to the strength of theeducation system in the UK, from prep schools tosixth form, from early years education to theachievement of the A level gold standard.

Our independent schools are committed tosuccess for each and every one of their studentbody and as such, will make high demands on theacademic strengths and personal achievements oftheir students. Once a student puts on theuniform of the school, they become anambassador of that school and its values.

Those expectations mean that a student will needto make a serious and meaningful choice both interms of their school and their own expectations.Schools will expect potential students to undergoentry tests and interviews to assure themselvesthat the students are the right fit for theirinstitution.

Once a student is accepted by the school and hasembarked upon their study path, the school willwant the student to play a full and active part inthe life of the school. Not only will the schoolneed to see success in the classroom but also inthe debating society, on the sports field or in themusic room. Schools need to see achievement, enthusiasm and dedication.

Academic UK

Schools will involve each student in their “house”system, which means that within the broaderschool there are smaller groups of students whoare organised under a housemaster orhousemistress. The “houses” are the buildingblocks of a school, and form the basis of allcompetition, cohesion and compassion.

As the student passes through their school life, every progress step will be monitored by theschool and Gateway and fed back to the parents. This regular reporting forms the keystone ofmeasuring a student’s development. The reportswill be based on observation of the student informal and informal assessment, attitude andapproach and how much time a student invests inindependent study.

Parents can be assured that the discipline anddedication of school life will lead ultimately to asuccessful outcome and that students are guidedtowards the next important step in theiracademic career - university, and here again, theschool and Gateway are here to help.

Accommodation

The association of Gateway schools offers the discerning parent a choiceof accommodation for their child during their academic studies in theUK. Traditionally the only option for international pupils studying at anindependent school was boarding. This model is still as popular today asit was 100 years ago, and is for many students the most appropriatechoice - one with which Gateway is happy to help parents.

Alternatively and uniquely, Gateway works with a wide variety of dayschools. This means that students join a school which has no boardingfacilities and consequently a much lower number of internationalstudents. Students are placed with our network of carefully selectedlocal host families, many of whom have children studying at the sameschool.

There are advantages to both choices and we are happy to discuss themwith parents so that they can make the best choice for their child.

During the holidays Gateway provides alternative accommodationoptions for students if they cannot stay at school.

Our network of caring hosts provide a home from home to all thestudents in our care.

8

Guardianship

Gateway will be the student’s appointed and trusted guardian while theyare studying in the UK. We are proud of the level of service we offer toour parents, students and schools - a level of service that covers thestudent from the moment of arrival to the last sad, moment when theyleave us.

The Gateway Service Promise covers all aspect of a student’s stay -including:

• Advice and assistance on school selection

• Meet and Greet services on arrival

• Assistance with all travel arrangements throughout their studies

• Support with visa applications and extensions

• Representing the students’ academic interests

• Attending all parents evenings

• Regular feedback to parents on both academic progress and pastoral

matters

• Registration with police, the health service, banks and other official

bodies

• School visits to meet with the student at least once every two weeks

• Own-language Guardians who mentor and support the student

• 24-hour emergency response team

Gateway offers its Guardianship either as part of the package whenchoosing a Gateway association school or as an additional service toparents who have selected another educational institution.

How to book

Gateway services can be booked directly with us or you may choose touse the services of one of our highly trusted overseas representatives.

Long Term StudentsEach one of our associate schools operates their own admissions criteria.Admission to a chosen school will normally consist of a English andmaths test, plus a review of previous academic history from the studentscurrent school. If the student has taken an IELTS test recently then thatscore will also be taken into account. Associate schools also like tointerview candidates to find out more about them - so it is importantthat applicants are ready to talk about not only their academicachievements but what they have done outside of the classroom. Havinga full extra-curricular experience - in sports, arts or music - can make allthe difference to whether an application is successful or not.Gateway and our representatives will guide you through the applicationprocess and help you at every point. We will also be there to advise onvisa applications and transferring to the UK to study.Contact our representative or ourselves to talk through the optionsavailable, and remember - our role is to be there for you.
