Gasification Technologies for Fuel, Power and Chemical Products

About the CourseThis course provides a fundamental grounding in gasification technology. It communicates sufficient theoretical background to understand why different processes behave the way they do. It also reviews the properties of coals and other feedstock for their suitability for gasification.

The course provides a systematic approach to gasifier design options and their application in all the major gasification technologies. It demonstrates a logical selection methodology for developing a short list of processes for any particular feedstock and end product.

A complete gasification project also requires treatment of the raw gas from the gasifier to meet the specifications of a specific application. The course provides an overview of the gas treating processes and their integration into an overall gasification complex.

Attention is paid to practical detail with examples from operating plants. Issues such as availability, reliability and maintainability as well as safety and environmental performance are discussed.

About the Course DirectorChris is an acknowledged expert in gasification and allied technologies. He has over 40 years’ experience in the sale, design, development, execution and management of capital investment projects with special emphasis in the fields of gas production, treatment and synthesis processes as well as Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technologies. For the past ten years Chris has operated his own company providing consultancy services to the gasification industry.

After nine years of professional experience in South Africa, which includes the start up of an industrial gas producer, Chris joined Lurgi in 1975, where he remained for over 25 years. Positions held included: Process Engineer, Start up Engineer / Start up Manager, Proposals Engineer, and Project Manager. He later held management positions including

• Head of Department, Gas Production and Synthesis Technologies,

• Vice President, Gas Technology,• Vice President, Corporate Development• Managing Director, Lurgi India• Director, Systems Technology (till retirement in 2000)

Responsibilities in the various positions indicated included a large number of ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, GTL, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants, mostly based on gasification. This included all the associated gas treatment facilities including acid gas removal. Chris was responsible for development of IGCC concepts within Lurgi and managed the design of the complete gas production train for the combined IGCC/hydrogen plant at Shell’s Pernis refinery in Rotterdam. He has worked on various aspects of the gas production for Sasol Secunda, Shell Bintulu and Mossgas (now PetroSA) CTL and GTL plants.

Since retirement from Lurgi, major activities have included the following:

• Co-authoring the book “Gasification”, which went into a second edition in 2008.

• Co-authoring a peer-reviewed article on the current state of R&D in the coal-to-chemicals field (2013).

• Authoring an EPRI report on availability issues in IGCC power plants.

• Reliability audit on an ammonia plant based on gasification of refinery residues.

• Consultation tasks for two IGCC units recently started up or currently under construction.

• Consultation tasks including HAZOP participation for Shell and ExxonMobil for an asphalt gasification to hydrogen and power project in Fujian, China.

• Consulting tasks for a European client currently building a coal to ammonia plant in China.

• Technical patent review of two Chinese coal gasification technologies.

• Training seminars for various clients on gasification and related topics (clients include Sasol, Eni, UOP, Midrex, E.ON US, Indian Oil Corp., Korean Western Power, University of Freiberg, Vale, and Korean Southern Power).
