Julie Nisbet, 28, decided that 2011 would be the year to help raise awareness and money for Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland, where she’s also a full-time fundraiser. In April, she completed two marathons within seven days, and in June participated in the Great North Swim. In September, she will start her biggest series of events yet. Over five consecutive weeks, Julie will be doing the Mid- dlesbrough 10K run on September 4th, followed by a tandem parachute jump, Great North Run, a trek to Machu Picchu in Peru, and finishing with Kielder Marathon on October 9th. She said, “My aim was Epic month for local fundraiser to raise awareness for Butterwick Hospice by completing every running race in the Butterwick vest Julie really is a full-time fundraiser! this year. Then I started participating in events that were out of my comfort zone – it’s not a ‘challenge’ if it’s easy. I’m very passionate about the work of the Butterwick Hospice, and keen to raise the awareness of the charity as much as possible.” Julie is keen for people to ask about the work of the Hospice, so if you see her at any of the events listed, don’t be shy – say hello! To watch the progress of her fundraising efforts, you can visit her online donation page at www.justgiving. com/butterwickbigone. If Julie has inspired you, why not join her on one her fundraising adventures? The charity will be hosting a sponsored skydive on Sunday 11th September at Skydive Academy near Peterlee. A deposit of £70 is required upon booking and participants need to raise £350. For more in- formation call Julie at the Hospice on 01388 603003 or email julienisbet@ butterwick.org.uk. After local residents reel from the aftermath of the recent Leisure Centre saga, it seems that our community centres are now facing funding cuts and threat of closure. As part of its remit to reduce its budget by £125m in the next four years, Durham County Council has carried out a review of community centres, halls and other community rooms in our area and proposes that some will be forced to close. The review outlines how 12 communal halls will be considered for closure and a further 15 that currently have their doors closed will shut permanently. A further 43 community facilities will receive no more council investment unless extra money becomes available. This would mean that their management committee or community association would be responsible for seeking funding to pay for upkeep of the facilities. Community centres come under threat Thirty eight facilities in deprived areas or areas where there are no alterna- tive facilities will continue to be funded by the council. Councillors will discuss the report in coming weeks with a public consultation to follow next month. A final decision is due in February. As it stands, Henknowle Community Centre, Coundon & Leeholme Community Centre and Selby Close Community Centre in West Auckland are to receive investment and remain open. Toronto Community Centre and Monteith Close in West Auckland will receive no further funding unless the resources become available, while Mickle Grove in Leeholme and Cornwall Place in Henknowle are both set to close or be transferred. Furthermore, Dorset Place in Henknowle and Sycamore Grove in West Auckand are already closed and will remain so.

Maternity unit set to reopenAfter the recent closure of the mid-wife led maternity unit at Bishop Auckland due to lack of staff, hospital bosses have confirmed that the unit will reopen as planned. A spokesperson from the NHS Durham & Darlington Trust said, “We have suc-cessfully recruited 12 midwives to the maternity service, which includes consultant-led units at Durham and Darlington.“This means the MLU

(Midwife Led Unit at Bishop Auckland) will reopen on September 5th as planned.”The local unit operates on a small number of staff and is for women who are expected to have trouble-free, normal births. Only roughly 350 births take place at the MLU each year - most of the births in County Durham take place at the larger consultant-led maternity units in Durham and Darlington.

The town’s Rugby Club has expressed its anger over the state of surrounding land due to travellers setting up camp. The club has recently spent a large amount of money repairing and re-seeding the training area, however they fear more money will need to be spent after damage was caused by the

travellers’ horses.A spokesperson for the club said, “The horses are continually straying onto rugby club land and causing damage to our pitches and there is the added inconvenience of clearing up horse manure on a daily basis from the pitches and training areas.”

Boys from King James I Academy in Bishop Auckland pick up some dance skills from their Jamaican friends

Teenage boys at King James I Academy have been showing off some fancy footwork now dance has become ‘cool’ thanks to friends from the other side of the world.A growing number of boys in Years 8-10 at the school are discovering talent they did not know they had, following a visit by young people from their partner school in Jamaica. The academy began sending staff and students to the Caribbean three years ago as part of a project to explore the other side of life for a half-Jamaican student.Following the first visit a relationship developed with the Flankers Peace and Justice Centre in Montego Bay.“They showed us dance and we did some drama workshops; the partnership grew from there, and the first group came here from Jamaica in January 2009,” explained Stephen Elliott, director of learning for drama.Together with Joanne Howard, head of performing arts at King James, they have developed the project which is known as Jamaica Difference.“It has had a big impact on boys’ dance at King James. The Jamaicans have helped show that dance is credible and cool, to the point where all the boys in our school dance. Eight boys are even developing choreography themselves.”The boys’ skills were on display recently at the official launch of King James I’s Academy status, when they were joined on stage by some of their Jamaican

friends, who spent ten days in County Durham.Ryan Minns, 13, from Coundon, said, “It’s been great to try something new, and dancing has helped my drama. I’m going to Jamaica next year. I’m excited but scared at the same time.”Callum Dixon, 13, from Crook, added, “It feels good to be with other people and you don’t care so much if you make a mistake.”Mr Elliott added that local students were gaining fresh insight into another culture.

“The Jamaicans have very little financially and very little opportunity. But they have immense enjoyment for life and know how to appreciate what they do have. That’s a very powerful message,” he explained. The academy has also welcomed three visiting headteachers from other schools in Jamaica, Lambert Pearson from Runaway Bay, Desland Pennant from Hoolebury and Duen Lindsay from Steer Town, as part of the growing relationship with the country.
