74 Witch hazel The common name. witch hazel, has no connection to sofceresses or she·dev1ls. According to the Oxford EngUsh Diellon:Jty wilch. or,vych. refers to any tree or shrub that has pliant branches. such as the "'YC:h elm, from which bows "'ere made. The first record of rt being used to describe hamamelis 'vasn·t until 1760. when Brihsh emtgn1nts to North America apphed it to the indigenous shrub. Early setuers to North America used a decochon of hamamelis. made from mashing and boiling the hvigs of th e plant. to treat cuts. bruises and sores. and Native Americans still use it to treat swelhng and intlammahon. USDA5a·9b. H. X INTERMEDIA ' FEUERZAUBER' A vigorous hybr.cl that grows quickly and has a 3m·wide spread. The coppery·orange flowers are produced 1n tibundance but have very ht tie perfume. Sometimes sold as H. x 1ntermediil 'Firecracker: 3. 5m. RHS H7. USDA 6a·9b. H. X fNTERMEDIA 'LIVIA. Bred only 20 years ago this cult1var must have the most intensely red flowers of the genus.
