eDear Friends:

I find inspiration in many places, including our rich living collections and their beautiful settings. In them I see the promises of growth and development, and the opportunities for diverse people and families to gather, sit, stroll, learn, relax, enjoy and make memories.

I’m also inspired by the various public programs we produce each year and the tens of thousands of people we engage. You can read about all of them in our most recent summary at www.bbgardens.org/education, but one tidbit I’m tremendously proud of is that more than 98% of the 14,000 children who participated in our education and other public programs did so completely free of charge. And that number has been at or above 95% for more than five years. Please read that report! It will take fifteen minutes of your time and I promise you will be surprised (and maybe more than just a little bit proud).

Volunteerism inspires me, too. Last year, over 1,200 volunteers gave of 28,000 hours to The Gardens. That amounts to more than 14 full-time staff positions, and over $650,000 in in-kind support. I’m humbled every day by such devotion. It’s unforgettable.

Achievements like these are only possible with your help – and the more you do, the more we can do. So I’m respectfully asking you to do more if you’re able to do so. How? Give us more volunteer hours. Move up a membership level or two. Give memberships as gifts. Make a charitable year-end donation – or a bigger one! Remember us in your estate planning, and please let us know so that your dedication can be an inspiration to others.

Lastly, as we wind down the calendar on this, our 50th year, we’re deeply grateful for all the support we have received in 2014, and to the individuals, businesses, foundations and organizations who have provided it. I hope The Gardens continues to inspire you.

See you in The Gardens,

Fred SpicerExecutive Director & CEO

On October 2, Birmingham Botanical Gardens kicked off Antiques at The Gardens presented by IBERIABANK with Sterne Agee’s Gala in The Gardens. The annual black-tie event was reinvigorated for its ninth year, welcoming more than 500 guests to shop Alabama’s premiere antiques show. Guests made their way to Blount Plaza as the evening concluded, dancing to the sounds of the Atlanta Pleasure Band and enjoying desserts.

Taylor Steele, volunteer coordinatorVolunteer SpotlightVolunteers Bring Style, Beauty and Creativity to the Garden Center LobbyEvery week, a new palette of color transforms The Gardens’ lobby, courtesy of a group of talented and creative volunteers involved with the Lobby Flowers Project, supported by the Redmont Neighborhood Association.

The Gardens are about plants and flowers, so it makes sense to promote the appreciation of plants through the creative school of floral design in the Garden Center lobby.

William Wong and Zhaleh McCullers are two of the talented volunteers who bring beauty and color to our arrival area.

William Wong spends most of his workday assisting people with mailing their packages around the world, but at least once a month he shares his talent of floral design and arrangement by creating stunning arrangements for the lobby. Mr. Wong stated that he enjoys the process of creating an arrangement just as much as the finished product.

His style is best described as clean and proportionate. Influenced by his love for the art of Ikebana - a style of arrangement that often emphasizes other areas of the plant, such as its stems and leaves - draws emphasis toward shape, line and form. Though Ikebana has some open tenets of creative expression, it does maintain certain rules governing its expression.

Zhaleh McCullers’s arrangements come from her love of art in any form. She believes the traits of creativity and the imagination within the artist can turn anything in our environment into art. Zhaleh lives by the belief that you create arrangements through your house at any time (she has a bowl of fruit and vegetables on display in her kitchen every week). Zaleh’s interest in flower arranging started over 26 years ago, and was influenced by her husband’s grandmother, Mrs. Aileen Kelly. Whenever they found a Sunday afternoon free, they would drive through the countryside picking wildflowers. Zhaleh recalled they always picked enough to create an arrangement upon their return home

Zhaleh has always loved using Queen Anne’s lace in her arrangements. She says, “They are so delicate, beautiful, and go with everything.” Zhaleh believes her style is an eclectic and carefree look with a more monochromatic theme.

“If I want to create an elegant, timeless, and sophisticated look, I go with roses and make a robe ball with no other filler except leaves or baby’s breath.”

Other areas where Zhaleh’s creative talents are expressed are in her interest in designing one-of-a-kind beaded jewelry and interior decorating.

We’re fortunate to have a team of wonderful and talented volunteers like William and Zhaleh that share their passion and gift for floral design with us every week.

Thank you William and Zhaleh!

◄ November 4: Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon

December 2: ►The Roots of My Obsession by Thomas Cooper

We are very excited to announce a new addition to The Archives and Rare Book Room in honor of Carl Frederick Mattil (1933-2007): three Victory Garden posters. These three vintage posters cover the time period from War World I to War World II. Each poster has beautiful illustrations and are like taking a walk back in time; they show the importance of gardening, stretching resources and the strength of our military. Each poster makes you very proud to be an American and a gardener, and shows the American resolve to push forward in times of crises. Mattil was the City Horticulturalist who ran The Gardens before it had an official director. He was also a military veteran and loved his vegetable garden. He retired as the Director of Horticulture and Urban Forestry for the City of B i r m i n g h a m where he was employed for over 34 years.

iNg Good Things Growing…

in The Gardens Fred Spicer, executive director & CEO

In our area, Japanese maples offer dependable and beautiful fall color that peaks in mid- to late November. In addition, they are generally pest-free and surprisingly drought tolerant once established. The inherent genetic variability in the species, Acer palmatum, is staggering and 1,000+ cultivars have been selected over its centuries-long cultivated history. Dozens—if not hundreds—can be found in the retail and mail order trade and differences in size and form make them indispensable in almost every garden. This surfeit makes writing anything less than an encyclopedia inadequate (and for those please visit our library!), thus this focus on one of my favorites, which is an excellent performer at The Gardens.

‘Katsura’ is a older selection of Acer palmatum, apparently named for the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto, Japan; it may have originated on those grounds or been given the name as a deserved honorific. In any case, it is a spectacular large-growing form of the species that was selected for the brilliant color change of its newly-emerging leaves in spring. A number of cultivars have been developed for such characteristics. And with flowers that are

not obviously ornamental, why not? After all, leaves last much longer than flowers do.

In early spring, usually mid-March for us here, ‘Katsura’ leaves emerge a dusky orange (above left), distinctly different from typical red- or green-leafed varieties. As the stems quickly elongate, the leaves turn deep yellow suffusing to reddish-orange at the margins (above right and lower left). Soon after, the entire leaf goes to brilliant chartreuse, lighting up any setting (upper left). Finally, as the growing season

heats up, the leaves turn a medium-green, showing no hint of what occurred earlier. The entire changeover happens in about a six weeks. In fall, the color change happens almost in reverse before the final show of intense orange-red, with orange-yellow highlights (below left).

Different sources list ‘Katsura’ as growing to different sizes, but my research (and experience) indicates that this is a small tree form, wider than tall, with a dome-shaped habit to 25’ tall and maybe more over time. A final caveat regarding what the literature says about Japanese maples: sizes and growth rates are larger and faster, respectively, in the southeastern US than in the northwestern US, Europe and Japan, and much of the literature emanates from the latter three locations.

tsThe Lady

With All The Answersby David Rambo

drawn from the life and letters of Ann Landerswith the cooperation of Margo Howard

performed by Dolores Hydock

Before there was Oprah, before there was Dr. Laura or Judge Judy, there was Ann Landers. For decades, the renowned advice columnist answered countless letters from lovelorn teens, confused couples, and a multitude of others in need of advice. No topic was o-limits, including housekeeping au naturel, sports equipment in the boudoir, and other hot topics. But whatever the subject, Landers always regaled her readers with direct, insightful, and often

humorously honest responses.

Dolores Hydock stars in the one-woman play, where we nd Ann Landers in her Chicago apartment, struggling to write the column that would become one of the most famous she would ever compose. Come spend an evening with the woman who seemed like family to millions of readers who had breakfast with her -- or at least her advice -- every morning.
