GARDEN CLUB The monthly meeting of the Garden Club scheduled to meet at the home of Mrs. Roscoe Queen has been postponed until next week. 3 RUTHERFORD COUNTY SUN Friday, July 15 1938 Club Meetings HAPPENINGS AROUND RUTHERFORD COUNTY The town of Forest City is abuzz with excitement. The Griffith Theater will present a special showing of the Academy Award-winning movie All readers are reminded to tune your radio to President Roosevelt’s Fireside Chat scheduled to begin at 7:00 on Wednesday night. Speaking of radio listening, please remember to keep my Uncle Jim Bob in your thoughts and prayers. He fell off his porch and into the shrubbery yesterday evening and twisted his ankle. He was listening to the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show while sitting on the front porch. When he got up to turn off the radio, he accidentally rocked on his cat’s tail. Daisy, his cat, jumped up screeching and began circling around his feet. All the noise startled Bear, his coon dog, who was sleeping under the porch swing. Bear started chasing Daisy, who jumped un in Uncle Jim Bob’s arms causing him to lose his balance and fall off the porch. Dr. Lane said that Uncle Jim Bob would be fine in a few days, but that she should stick to listening Miss Laura got into a nest of yellow jackets on Saturday while picking blackberries and is not able to host at the scheduled time. However, she is still very confident that her beautiful gardenias, geraniums, begonias, and hydrangeas will still be in full bloom at the new date. BOOK CLUB The Lucille Nanney Book Club met at the home of Mrs. Charles Z. Flack Sr. on Thursday morning for the monthly meeting. The group enjoyed a lively discussion of Ernest Hemingway’s book, The Sun Also Rises. The ladies decided to deviate from the usual novel reading and read Thorton Wilder’s new play, Our Town, which is the talk of the town. Mrs. Flack served delicious refreshments consisting of cucumber sandwiches, petit fours, maple meringue cookies, and mint julep iced tea. STAMP CLUB Rutherford County Stamp Collector Club met at the home of Dr. Frank Lloyd on Monday evening. Ten stamp enthusiasts were present for a very entertaining evening. Dr. Lloyd had purchased a rare stamp from New Zealand, and all attendees thoroughly enjoyed perusing the details of this newly acquired t reasure. Mrs. Lloyd served her famous Lane cake and coffee during the social time following the meeting. The club will meet Entertainme nt Mutiny on the Bounty, starring Clark Gable, this weekend. FILM RADIO Celebrit y FITZGERALD S VISIT RUTHERFORD COUNTY The world famous author F. Scott Fitzgerald and his socialite wife, Zelda, are visiting our county this weekend. The Fitzgeralds were seen playing golf, dancing, and dining Saturday at the lovely Lake Lure Inn with Mr. and Mrs. Bobo Tanner and Mr. and Mrs. Norris Briggs from Rutherfordton. After dinner, the Fitzgerald couple continued to socialize with various revelers until the wee hours of morning. According to an anonymous source at the Inn, the Fitzgeralds became loud and unruly after Mrs. Fitzgerald slapped a waiter when she was asked to get down off the piano. The altercation became more boisterous when Mr. Fitzgerald tried to drag her down, and authorities were called. However, no arrests were made since Mrs. Fitzgerald passed out before they arrived. The
