THE TOM QUINN

STORY

The Centre is named in honour of

Thomas (Tom) Norman Quinn OAM,

committed Salvationist, Bachelor of

Laws, Certified Practising Accountant

(CPA), Associate of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries

(ACIS), Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management,

Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics.

Tom led a very busy corporate life as a Senior Executive of

Qantas before retiring to Bundaberg from Sydney in January

1979 due to his wife Elaine’s ill health.

From his early days in Bundaberg he became actively engaged

in the life of the church and in the Community Affairs,

particularly in regard to the Local University Campus,

Technical Education and Training and the Tourism Industry.

Tom was secretary of the Hinkler Memorial Museum and

Research Society Inc. from 1985. Tom was one of three

Bundaberg men involved in having Bert Hinkler’s House in

Southampton England dismantled brick-by-brick and brought

to its current position in the Botanic Gardens in North

Bundaberg. Tom was also a member of the Bundaberg

Advisory Committee of the Central Queensland University’s

Bundaberg Campus since its establishment in 1988.

Tom’s contributions in these fields were widely acknowledged

and he was the recipient of a number of awards and honours

including Medal of the Order of Australia (1997), Australian

Trainer of the Year (1996), Honorary Master of Business

(Central Queensland University), Hon.M.Bus (1995) and

International Golden Key Award for Academic Excellence.

He completed a Bar Practice Course at Queensland University of

Technology in July 2003 and was admitted to

The Bar of The Supreme Court of Queensland in November

2003 at age 75. Tom provide pro bono (no charge) legal support

and representation to over 400 clients until his death in 2006.

Tom identified the TQCC site in early 2002 as having the

potential to service the young people who he and other concerned

educators had notice “slipping through the cracks” through

neglect, poor education and little emotional support. He was

also concerned at the lack of resources for people recovering from

addition.

In 2002, work began to convert a derelict, abandoned former

recycling centre into a vibrant, effective community initiative

that has assisted thousands of people in need and continues to

do so.

The result of which now surrounds you. Beautiful gardens,

wonderful support staff and volunteers, lives being

transformed, a happy and peaceful place.

A WONDERFUL TESTAMENT TO TOM’S VISION.

Tom’s favourite Japanese proverb.

“nana korobi ya oki”

“Fall down seven times, get up eight”.

“TRANSFORMING LIVES ONE AT A TIME”
