Procedures – Viewing the Film or Trailer:

1.StudentswillviewtheDVD,Garbage Dreams,orthesix-minutepreview.Beforeviewing,buildbackgroundbyaskingstudentstothinkaboutgarbageandrecyclingintheirowncommunities.UsethemaporglobetoshowstudentswheretheZaballeencommunitylivesandwheretheactioninthemovietakesplace.Askthemtolistwhattheythinktheyknowaboutgarbageandwhattheywanttolearnaboutrecyclingfromwatchingthefilm.Listtheirideasontheboard.YoucanhandoutWorksheet #1 KWL Chart ifyoudesire,andstudentscanfillouttheKWLchartastheywatchthefilm.

2.Themovierunsforjustunderonehour.Youcanwatchthefilmintwoclassperiodsifdesired.Asyouwatchthefilm,youcanstopandstarttopointoutfactsoranswerstudentquestions.Alternatively,youcanwatchthesix-minutepreview.

3.Afterthefilm,discusstheZaballeencommunitywithyourstudents.Whatdidtheylearnaboutthiscommunity?Whatdotheythinkaboutthewaythesepeoplemaketheirliving?Doyourstudentsthinkthisisahardoreasylifestyle?HowaretheZaballeenteensthesameasordifferentthantheyare?

4.RemindthemthattheZaballeenpeoplerecycle80percentofallthegarbagetheycollect.ManyU.S.cities,withrecyclingprogramsinplace,recycleonlyabout30percentofwhattheycollect.AskthemwhytheythinktheZaballeen aresogoodatrecycling.Askstudentstoexplainwhatrecyclingis.Whydotheythinkthematerialshavetobedividedintodifferenttypes?

Discusswiththestudentstheirownrecyclingpractices.Havethemlistthemajorbenefitsofrecyclingandsomeofthechallenges,andrecordtheirideasonasheetofpaper.Allowthemtosharetheirideasandlistsomeontheboardtodiscuss.Collecttheirworkandusethisforassessmentpurposes.

Procedures – Playing the Game:

1.Modelthegameforyourstudentstoexplaingamerules.YoucanhandoutWorksheet #3 Game Rulesbeforethegamebegins.

Theentiregamerunsfor8rounds(representing8months),andeachroundtakesapproximately3minutes,foratotalgameplayexperienceofunder30minutes.Studentscanplaythegameasindividuals,orinpairsorevengroupsofthree.Youmaywishtodividethemintosmallgroupsinordertocyclemorestudentsthroughgameplayandalsotoencouragestrategydiscussion.Thegamecanalsobeplayedinacomputerlabsetting.



2.Introducethegoalofthegame.Thestatedgoalistotrytorecycleashighapercentageofthegarbageasyoucanin8rounds.Specialbonuspointsareawardediftheyplayerreachesan80percentrecyclingrate.ThisrepresentstheefficiencyoftheZaballeenpeoplewhoaremuchmoreefficientthanotherrecyclingcommunitiesorwastemanagementcompanies,whohave,atbest,arateofabout20-30percentefficiencyinrecycling.Askstudentsthefollowing:

• Whyisbeinggoodatrecyclingbeneficial?• Whydotheythinkrecyclingisgoodfortheenvironment?• Whyisitgoodforacommunityeconomically?• Whathappenstothegarbagethatisnotrecycled?

3.Modeldifferentstrategiesforgameplay.Studentscanusetheirmoneyindifferentways.Theycaninvestinmoreexpensiverecyclingfactoriessothattheycanrecyclemorevaluablematerials(thefactoriesarerepresentedbythebinsthatrecyclethedifferenttypesofgarbage).Ortheycaninvestinexpansionstrategies,liketrucksandworkers.TheycanalsoinvestinAwarenessCampaigns,whichreferstogoingoutintothecommunityandteachingpeoplewaysthattheycanchangetheirownhabitstoimproverecyclingefficiency.

Askstudentswhytheymightwanttoinvestinonetypeofrecyclingfactoryorstrategyoveranother.Whydotheythinkthedifferentmaterialsareworthdifferentamounts?Howdoesinvestinginworkersimprovethegameplay?HowdoesinvestinginAwarenessCampaignsimprovethegameplay?Whatiftheytriedtoachieveadifferentgoal—suchasmaximizingtheircashonhand?Howwouldthatchangetheirgameplay?Askthemtothinkabouttheirgamingstrategiesastheyplaythegame.

4.Afterstudentsplaythegame,askthemtoreflectongameplaywiththefollowingquestions:

•Researchpapermakingandsetupapapermakingactivityforstudentstohelpthemdiscover,hands-on,whatpaperrecyclingislike.Papermakingrequiresonlyafew,easilyavailablematerialsandcanbedoneinoneclassperiod.TheAdditional Resourcessectionofthisguideprovidessitesforfindingoutmoreaboutthisactivity.

•Presenttheideaofover-packagingtostudents,withtheideathattherewouldbelessgarbagetorecycleor“throwaway”ifitemshadlesspackaging.Askstudentstobringintwopackageditemsfromhome.Havestudentscomparethesizeandweightofthepackagingcomparedtothecontentsofthepackage.Theycanuseascaletocomparethegrossweightofthepackage(thepackageplusthecontents)totheweightofthecontentsthemselves.Ortheymaybeabletofindinformationaboutweightrightonthepackage.Theycanalsocomparethedifferencesinpackagingandcontentssizes,bymeasuringeachonewitharuler.Ortheymaymakethecomparisonbyeye.

1.ClickonRECYCLEtostartthegame.

2.Youwillstartthegamewithonehungrygoatandapaperrecyclingfactory;thesegiveyoutheabilitytorecycleonlycleanpaperandorganic(foodwaste)materials.Clickanddragthosematerialsoutofthepileofgarbageandontothematchingrecyclingfactories.Eachtimeyouuseaparticularrecyclingfactory(orthegoat),itwilltakeafewsecondsforittoprocessandbereadyforthenextitem.

Youmayneedtomoveanobjectoutofthewaytogetyouritemout.Throwoutmaterialsthatcan’tberecycledintothegarbagecan(Landfill).Ifyouclearthepilebeforetimerunsout,youwillgetasmalltimebonus.

3.Asthegamebegins,youwillbegivenseedmoneytostartyourrecyclingbusiness.YoucanchoosetoUpgradeorExpandusingthemoneyyouhaveonhand,oryoucanjustbegintoplaythegame.Itis,however,highlyrecommendedthatyoustartbyspendingyourseedmoney.

Attheendofeachturn,youwillagainbeabletospendmoneyimprovingyourrecyclingcapabilities.Themoreyourecycle,themoreyoumoneyyou’llearn,andthemoreyou’llbeabletospend.

InUpgrade,youcaninvestinnewfactories(bins)torecyclenewmaterials(tin,glass,plastic,andaluminum),oryoucanimproveanexistingfactorybymakingitmoreefficient(animprovementwillreduceprocessingtimeorallowyoutorecyclenewtypesofmaterials).

YoucanalsoinvestinWorkers(whichincreasethetimeontheclockduringtheRecyclephase);Education(whichincreasestheamountoftimethatWorkersaddtotheclock);orAwarenessCampaigns(whichteachcitizenswaysthattheycanhelptoimprovetheoverallrecyclingrate)

InExpand,youcanbuytrucksthatletyoucollectgarbagefrommoreneighborhoods.ToExpand,firstbuyatruckandthenchooseanewneighborhood.Thiswillincreasetheamountofgarbageyoucollect,whichincreasesthesizeofyourgarbagepileduringtheRecyclephase.Themoreneighborhoodsyoucollectfrom,theyhigheryourCity-Widerecyclingratecangrowbytheendofthegame.

Remember,ifyoufindyourselfrunningoutoftimeduringRecycle,itmightbetimetoinvestinWorkers!



4.Eachinvestmentandexpansioncomeswithamaintenancefee(theUpkeepcost)thatmustbepaideachturn.Ifyouinvestintoomuchtoosoon,youmaynotbeabletorecycleenoughtocoveryourcostsandyou’lllosethegame.

5.Earlyinthegame,sendinggarbagetotheLandfillisfree.Laterinthegame,youwillstarttobechargedforgarbagethatgoestotheLandfill.AnyitemofgarbageyouputintheLandfillyourselfwillcosta$1DisposalFee.Anyitemsthatareleftunsortedwhenyourunoutoftime(includingrecyclables)willbeautomaticallysenttotheLandfillforyou…andwillcosta$2Haulingfee.

6.Continuetoclick“Recycle”andgothroughtheturns(months)untilyouhavereachedtheendofthegame.Atthatpoint,youwillseeyouroverallCity-Widerecyclingpercentageandbegivenatotalscorethatrankshowwellyouhaveplayed.ThisscoreismostlybasedonyourCity-Widerecycling,butalsoaccountsforyourmonthlyincomeandcashonhand.

Onceyougetyourscore,youmaythenpostitontheLeaderboardstocompetewithotherstudentsorfriends.
