Published by the Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association April 2018 C lean out the garage, organize your goods and get ready for the shoppers! The Festival of Garage Sales is the largest neighbor- hood garage sale in the city. The Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Associa- tion sponsors this event each year. BMNA provides 3 port-a-potties and a police officer to assist with traffic on Penn Avenue and Cedar Lake Road. These valuable services are paid for with the money neighbors pay when they register their garage sale with BMNA. Not only does your money help with these expenses, it also advertises your garage sale and the items you are selling. BMNA compiles a list of registered sales for the public. We post this list on our website and have copies at local businesses and each registered garage sale. $15 is our registration fee. Please register your sale at bmna.org or complete the registration form on this page. The deadline for registrations is Monday, April 30th. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! BMNA wants your stuff! The Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association will sell your donated goods and put the money towards the BMNA general fund. It’s easy to donate items. 1. Place your items in bags or boxes on your front sidewalk by 6 pm on May 3. Make sure they are not too heavy for our volunteers. 2. Send an email to [email protected] with your address. President Kevin Thompson calledthe meeting to order.

Motion to approve agenda. Second-ed. Motion passed.

Motion to approve minutes of lastmonth’s meeting. Seconded. Motionpassed.

Councilmember Lisa Goodman gavea report from the city. Lunch withLisa is March 28th in room 202Opus Hall, St Thomas’ Minneapoliscampus. The guest was going to beMike Kennedy, Director of Trans-portation, but he is now unavailableso Robin Hutcheson, Director ofPublic Works will be speaking.

Lisa took a vote on the topic for thenext Lunch with Lisa, either 911, orAnimal Control. Other associationswill vote and Lisa will select thetopic from the results.

Inspector Biard updated the com-munity on the results of the individ-ual found in Bryn Mawr Meadows. No Foul Play is suspected. It

appears she was homeless and per-haps fell asleep or passed out andfroze to death.

There are reports of drug dealingoccurring again on Penn Ave, justoff the overpass. A camera has beenset up overlooking the area. Neigh-bors can call if they witness suspi-cious activity, to report license platenumbers, or if the dealing moves toa different part of the neighborhood.Patrols have been increased in theneighborhood.

Linda Shaheen and Lisa Goodmanworked with Ned Abdul, newowner of the Century Link building,to use any left-over furniture fromthe now vacant CenturyLink build-ing for Anwatin and Bryn MawrSchools. Ned happily gave permis-sion to remove what furniture theyneeded. The Board would like tothank Linda, Lisa, and Ned for mak-ing this happen.

Nancy Aleksuk from Swervo Devel-opment spoke briefly on the Centu-ryLink building project. Swervo is alocal developer and has a history ofrenovating old building to new uses. The Downtown Armory andUptown Theatre are good examples. The space may be updated toinclude outdoor patios and perhapsa rooftop deck. The building willcontinue as an office complex. They are seeking a large anchor ten-ant and they plan to use the spaceas their corporate headquarters. They will manage the property aswell.

Aaron Diederich and Steve Minn ofLupe Development spoke in con-junction with Swervo. Lupe is com-mitted to Affordable Housing and islooking to develop two new devel-opments on the former CenturyLinkproperty. On the east side, they areconsidering a market rate seniorbuilding, planned as 3 stories, for55+ seniors, since there is no seniorhousing close by. The building maybe configured as an equity coopera-tive.

Second project will be on the westside and would likely consist ofbetween 100-150 affordable familyunits. These will be rentals, man-aged by Lupe Development. Thisproject would probably be about 4stories, built on pylons with parkingunder the building. Aiming at the50% or 60% of the metro medianincome families.

Lupe Development will work close-ly with the neighborhood to findcommon ground with what theneighborhood wants and needs. Thenoted concerns about extra trafficwill be addressed, though tradition-ally senior populations do not havemultiple cars. Initially a committeeconsisting of Kevin Thompson,Christopher Etz, and Vida Ditter willwork on Lupe Development onhow to proceed.

Chris Etz made a motion for theBoard to enter into an agreement

with Hennepin County Library toDigitize the Bugle archives andmake them available on the library’swebsite. Seconded. Motion passed.

Garden hose applications for 3 con-nections during the summer hasbeen approved.

JoEllyn Jolstad noted the date forthe Bugle Articles for the month ofApril. Kevin Thompson will writethe Board article for April.

The Board reviewed the CPP reportfor 2017. A few minor changes weremade. The report was approved.

Barry Schade was not present at themeeting, but submitted a writtenreport on progress on SWLRT,included in the minutes:

A Supplemental EnvironmentAssessment on changes to the proj-ect has been published, and a TownHall Meeting will be held on Thurs-day, March 22, 5:00 - 7:30 PM atDunwoody College of Technology.I intend to make a short statementat that meeting acknowledging thatthe BMNA requested such an envi-ronmental review of the Crash Wall, and the document substantiallyaddresses the issues we raised inour request.

In addition, I intend to point outthat the Bassett Creek Valley Work-ing Group has completed its workand issued its Report and Recom-mendations. The Working Groupprovided guidance on the aesthetictreatment of the Crash Wall and hadpositive results.

The environmental review processrelated to the Supplemental Environ-mental Assessment should be com-pleted in May, in time for openingof bids on the whole project. Con-struction should begin this Fall oncebids are awarded. Staff reportsthat momentum for federal fundingcontinues in Congress, in spite ofwhat the Administration is saying.

After the Town Hall meeting nextweek, I intend to start paying moreattention to the phasing of construc-tion adjacent to Bryn Mawr.Access to trails is going to be amess and I want to be sure that theneighborhood is aware of the evolv-ing status. This will be going infor some time once ground is bro-ken.

From the Editor

“The Bryn Mawr NeighborhoodAssociation (BMNA) purpose isto: strengthen our community;

improve the quality of life in ourcommunity; foster good personalrelationships in our community; andopen channels for information andcommunication in our community.”This is printed on page 6 along withinformation about the BMNA Boardelections coming up in May.

The Bugle publishes the BMNABoard’s meeting minutes so thattheir work on behalf of all of us isknown to the broader community. Ihave always said that the Bugleexists to connect and inform neigh-bors. And while it certainly doesaddress the communications pieceof the BMNA mission, it also helpsit fulfill the other aspects of thestatement of purpose.

This month I am thinking aboutthe relationship piece. There are alot of really troubling things hap-pening in the world today. I person-ally attribute much of it to the lackof connection between people. Saywhat you will about violent videogames, gun access and mentalhealth (and I do think we have a lotof work to do in these areas.) But Ifeel that at the heart of everything,if there was more value placed onall human life, we would not havethis epidemic of shooting deaths.

On page 5, you will find a sweetnote I received from a Queen Averesident, thanking a pair of neigh-bors for clearing snow for theirblock. She even explains why her85-year-old husband doesn’t do itany more. (Seriously, look at the bot-tom of the next page and read it!)

I’ve met Matt (one of the volun-teers mentioned) and have heardwhat a great neighbor he is. But Iam lucky to call Rod a friend and Itotally agree with his neighbor Barb– he is a great guy who alwayshelps out. I also know how hard heand his wife Jenny work to instillthis same ethic of caring for oneanother among their two children.

How many of us don’t evenknow the first or last name of theperson(s) living next door or acrossthe street? This woman has proba-bly already thanked Rod and Mattpersonally, but she wanted every-one in Bryn Mawr to know howgrateful she is to them.

Thank you to all the neighborswho quietly do good deeds and tothose who make an effort toacknowledge them. Learning abouteach other and recognizing our con-tributions is a great start to buildingrelationships on which a safe strongcommunity can be built.

Serving as an area representativeis one way to volunteer inBryn Mawr, but there are many

other ways our neighbors contributetheir time and energy. Meet theCarlson family. Rod and Jennyopen their garage and home to vol-unteers in Bryn Mawr each May forthe BMNA garage sale. They cleanout their garage, give me access to itfor the week before(and a few daysafter), volunteer at the sale and

donate to the sale! The Carlsonsare like so many of you. Their con-tributions are invaluable and mostneighbors are unaware of their gen-erosity. I am making an effort in2018 to highlight our “unsungheroes” each month.

Last month we featured HeidiRupp and her children. They deliv-er the Bugle each month. I hopeyou saw it.

- Patty Wycoff, Area 4BMNA Neighborhood Coordinator

Volunteers are theHeart of BrynMawr“Volunteering is the ultimate exercisein democracy. You vote in electionsonce a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind ofcommunity you want to live in”.~Author Unknown

“Volunteers do not necessarily havethe time; they just have the heart.” –Elizabeth Andrew

Spring is coming to Bryn Mawrand with it comes the BrynMawr Neighborhood Associa-

tion’s (BMNA) Annual Meeting. TheAnnual Meeting is Bryn Mawr’s offi-cial business meeting wherein boardmembers are elected for a two-yearterm. The board consists of officersand area representatives. Electionsfor board members are staggered sothat in each year about half of theboard is up for election. This year, the positions of President and Secre-tary are up, as well as even num-bered area representatives. BrynMawr is divided into seven areas, sothe even numbered areas 2, 4 and 6are up this year. Each area canelect up to 3 representatives to serveon the board.

The BMNA is incorporated as a501c3 non-profit organization. It isthe recognized entity representingthe interests of the geographicalportion of Minneapolis designatedas the Bryn Mawr Neighborhood. The BMNA’s stated purpose is:

“…to strengthen our community, improve our quality of life, fostergood personal relationships and toopen channels of information andcommunication in our community.”

The BMNA strives to accomplishthis mission by maintaining lines ofcommunication with elected repre-sentatives and being activelyinvolved in issues that affect theneighborhood. One well knownissue over the past decade or morehas been the Southwest Light Railline, for example. The BMNA hasbeen actively involved in SWLRTfrom the start with representativeson multiple advisory committees. One of the BMNA’s most recentactions was to request a supplemen-tal environmental assessment for thebarrier wall that is to be constructedin the corridor between Bryn Mawrand the Cedar Lake Trail area. That

request was submitted to the MetCouncil and the review was done.Bryn Mawr representatives have alsobeen working on landscape andscreening options to reduce thewall’s impact from a visual point ofview.

Another example of a long-termproject that the BMNA has beenworking on is the redevelopment ofthe Basset Creek Valley betweenBryn Mawr and downtown. Thearea has been largely industrial formany years and suffered a greatdeal of environmental contamina-tion. Slowly, working together withthe city, the Harrison neighborhood, and other stakeholders, the under-utilized land is attracting interest andis evolving into new uses. TheSWLRT is playing a part in theincreased desirability of the area fordevelopment since Bryn Mawr willhave two stations within its bound-aries, the station at Penn and 394,and the station at Van White Blvd(the Basset’s Creek Station).

In the coming few years, develop-ment will almost certainly come toother parts of the neighborhood aswell since some large parcels areeither for sale, or in one case, recently sold.

Other things the BMNA does:Sponsors and puts on community

building events such as the annualFestival of Yard Sales, the annual IceCream Scoop-Off, the annual Har-vest Dinner, Sip and Stroll and Sat-urnalia events.

The Bryn Mawr Garden Tourevery other year.

Extensive public garden spaces.Community projects.Support of the schools (Anwatin

and Bryn Mawr Elementary).Publication and distribution of the

Bryn Mawr Bugle, possibly the lastneighborhood-specific newspaperaround.

Maintenance of our website,bmna.org.

And more.Please consider getting involved!

The Annual Meeting and Potluckwill be held on May 9th at the BrynMawr Elementary School in the cafe-teria. Check BMNA.org for moreinfo about the neighborhood andthe association. If you’re interestedin serving on the board, contactBrian Treece [email protected].

Unsung Heros

A Heartfelt Thank You ForTwo Wonderful Neighbors

We are lucky to live on this side of thestreet where Rod Carlson and MattPequignot live. Every time it snows

they are there early clearing off the sidewalks forthe whole block and up to front doors and ourdriveway.

They are the kind of neighbors that make Bryn Mawr what it is -a good place to live. My husband did it for 39 years and wore out3 snowblowers doing it. But now he is too lazy even though he isonly 85 years old. Matt and Rod also volunteer for other deeds inBryn Mawr.

Last month, the Up North serieskicked off by highlightingBoom Island Brewery, good

beer, cats, and cat videos. Don’tworry, that sentence should onlymake sense if you read the article!Since that time, the MinneapolisPark Board’s Community ActionCommittee (of which, I’m fortunateenough to be a member) continuedits work to inform plans to re-designMinneapolis parks north of I-394and west of I-94.

Plans have really been comingalong, and community engagementby the Park Board remains remark-ably good. There have been meet-ings with landscape design compa-nies from across the country, andthe Master Plan for North Minneapo-lis is starting to take shape. Pleaseconsider getting involved! Whileyou’re Up North, maybe you’ll con-sider hitting Boom Island Breweryor my latest exploration of NorthMinneapolis, So Low Grocery Out-let.

I have to admit, I’ve been curiousabout So Low, since I first sawFancy Ray McCloney singing itspraises on TV: “they’ll bag you upand carry you out! Located onEmerson and Lowry. So Low!Where Big Mama gets her greens, and saves some green!!! HaHaHa-Ha.” If you haven’t seen the com-mercials, you’ll find them with lotsof Thumbs Up on YouTube. They.Are. Awesome.

Fancy Ray declares So Low tohave “the best meat department inMinnesota: chicken wings, cat fishnuggets, neckbones, smoked turkeytails, ribs, chops, everything!” Inanother commercial, there’s a refer-ence to pigs’ feet. When my wifeand I were dreaming up the menufor Christmas dinner for 15 peoplethis year, it came down to pigs feetor pork loin. The loin won out bya toenail, and my boys and I head-ed to So Low on a quiet Fridayafternoon.

I have to say that I don’t know ifthere would have been a better wayto foster my kids’ empathy for racialminorities than to make them a

minority themselves, even if onlywhile shopping for pork. There’sno doubt we stuck out like a whitethumb. There’s also no doubt thatNorth Minneapolis was as MinnesotaNice as Ely.

It took us a few minutes to getoriented to the vast selection and, from there, we really needed help.Having missed the “take a number”cues, we stood patiently waiting tobe helped. Another patron immedi-ately noted our predicament and, despite her having the next number, directed the butcher to us (if you’rereading this, thank you again!).What we got from the butcher wassmiles, witty banter, and far morethan our fair share of his time, with-out even an inkling of guilt. It wasone of the most pleasant shoppingexperiences I have had.

And how was the meat? I can’tblame So Low for putting their porkin the hands of a complete hack(me). I smoked it way too long, but the meat itself saved the day.My guests were very gracious, andI’ll be back to So Low again soon.

As a busy professional, I chose ahome in a neighborhood with small-town charm, access to some of thebest urban and natural features, anda five-minute commute to down-town Minneapolis. My story-and-a-half features beautiful originalwoodwork along with eclectic mod-ern furnishings and a new kitchen

open to the original dining room.Livable square footage more thandoubled by creating a spacious, rest-ful master suite in the unfinishedupper level, and a theatre and homeoffice in the lower level. Killers of the Flower Moon: :The OsageMurders and the Birth of the FBIBy David Grann

Molly Burkhardt knew themembers of her family werebeing murdered, but author-

ities appeared unable to discoverwho was behind the poisonings, bru-tal shootings, and arson. It startedwith the mysterious death of Molly’s27 year old sister, from what doctorsclaimed was “wasting disease.” Twoyears later, another sister was foundshot in the head in her car, andshortly after that her mother died ofthe vague “wasting disease.” By thetime a third sister was killed in ahouse fire, Molly had no doubts thatsomeone was targeting her family.

This riveting true story of themurders of members of the OsageNation chronicles the history of theU.S government’s broken promisesto American Indians, the Oklahomaoil boom of the early 1900’s, andthe early years of the FBI, woventogether in a conspiracy to takecontrol of the oil the Osage Indiansowned. Given how long this traves-ty went on, and the number ofagencies and people involved, wewere taken aback that we had neverheard of this historical event. Itspeaks to the absence of narrativefor marginalized peoples in theUnited States.

After many broken agreements, the Osage Nation was forced to selltheir lands in Kansas in the 1870’s,and bought a parcel of land inOklahoma that was hilly and unsuit-ed for farming. They were one offew American Indian nations to buytheir own reservation. In a shrewdmove, it was stipulated in the pur-chase agreement that the land’s “oil, gas, coal, or other minerals” wouldalso be owned by the tribe. Whenoil was discovered, the Osage

leased their land to prospectors, including the Getty, Skelly, Sinclair, and Phillips families. Grann writes,“In 1923 alone the tribe took inmore than $30 million, the equiva-lent today of more than $400 mil-lion. The Osage were consideredthe wealthiest people per capita inthe world.”

The wealth concentrated in theOsage Nation was a great source ofenvy and frustration for white set-tlers and town leaders. Molly’s fami-ly was not the only one to be sys-tematically murdered. Between 1920and 1924 over a dozen killingsoccurred, including an oilman whowas advocating for the tribe inWashington and an investigator sentto find out what was happening. AWashington Post headline read“Conspiracy Believed to Kill RichIndians.” It became known as theOsage Reign of Terror.

With local and state authoritiesunable or unwilling to find thekillers, the fledgling FBI stepped in.Grann’s meticulous research docu-ments the case FBI agent TomWhite was able to pull together toexpose those behind the murders ofpossibly hundreds of people. Hiswork illuminates how the FBI grewinto the organization it is today.

This book is dense; filled withdates, and quotes and references. There are numerous facts and char-acters to keep track of, with Grannlinking direct quotes from resourcematerials. For some, it was difficultto power through. But it’s a com-pelling crime story that needs to beexposed, revealing the disturbingattempts to destroy a proud nation, told with urgency and compassion._______________________________What the Moms are reading now:

Moms at La MesaThe Moms were excited to visit

the new neighborhood restaurant“La Mesa” on a recent Friday night.Though we loved “Sparks” andwere sad to see it go, we wereoverjoyed to see that its space wasso quickly filled. An excellent com-plement to our neighborhood inevery way. We got there as quicklyas our schedules would allow. Wewere not disappointed.

Because it was a Friday night, itwas full but with minimal waitingtimes. There was usually at leastone table available in the ‘new’ sec-tion in which we were sitting. Thespace is a lovely and well designedas before, of course, though a bitdark for my taste, but then I’m abright lights gal. The noise levelwas very acceptable especially givenhow full the dining room was.

The beer and wine selections weregood and not too expensive andthere were some exotic importedsodas and soft drinks from SouthAmerica. We’ll try them next time orperhaps when we visit with kids. This visit we opted for adult bever-ages.

We ordered the chicken wings –-4whole wings to an order, not justdrumettes. They were excellent, prepared in a chili sauce (glutenfree), but with a Minnesota spicelevel (not too hot). They were a bitmessy and we wished we’d had

some of those little packet handwipes. We also ordered the QuesoFundito which we loved best of all!It is a spiced cheese sauce servedwith grilled crostini for dipping.Yummy! Kind of an Andean fon-due.

Next we ordered the Chorizopizza on a gluten free crust, mahimahi tacos and the Chuzos – mari-nated chicken skewers with Andeancorn and red onion-tomato salad. The gluten free pizza crust wasexcellent. The gluten intolerantamong us said it was the best she’dever had. She even had to doublecheck it was gluten free, it lookedand tasted so different than she’dhad in the past. The pizza toppingcould have used a bit more sausage. One in our party thought the pizzawas too bland. The rest thought itwas fine. The tacos were good, thegrilled mahi mahi excellent but thetortillas themselves were crumbly,so not a finger food. The chickenskewers were very tasty as was thesalad. We did not care for theAndean corn.

Then, yum of yums, we ordereddessert! We shared a piece of TresLeches cake that was moist but nottoo sweet, just as it’s supposed tobe, and a martini glass full of choco-late mousse that was excellent.

Kudos to the chefs and theservers and welcome, La Mesa, tothe neighborhood.
