Garage Band 101 Tips! • Unless your computer desktop looks like a scene from, “A Beautiful Mind,” always create copies of your original files and place them on the desktop, and then work from these copies. This is to ensure that you don’t inadvertently manipulate an original song/file. You can then delete the copied files once your project is complete. • Choosing the appropriate project type when you open garage band SHOULD provide you with the necessary elements already in place for you to succeed. • The program is fairly intuitive to use, so if you would expect to be able to use a standard command ie. Cut = command + X, you will be able to use the same shortcuts in garage band when in either the edit window or the arrange window. • You can import movie clips and extract the sound, or create your own over dubbing and soundtrack while watching the video footage. You lose the video editing tools from iMovie, but you gain far more control over the sound editing and it is arguably an easier program to navigate.

Resizing sound filesIf you are posting sound clips to weebly or another interactive website, or merely preparing for email, you are able to reduce the quality of the file and greatly reduce the size.
Process Import original file, or drop & drag file into arrange window Ensure that the file begins at 00:00 in the timeline click and drag to correct Ensure that a portion of the file is not selected for looping ie. No yellow bar highlighting a section of the timeline You may like to increase the volume to boost the sound level before exporting do this in the track listing on the left hand side Go to Share>Export song to disk> and select appropriate file type and size.NB: ACC (.m4a) files are the iTunes standard file type, .mp3 file tend to be smaller and more compatible with online resources.
RingtonesYou can create custom ringtones for your phone using music from your itunes library.
Process Import original file, or drop & drag file into arrange window Ensure that the file begins at 00:00 in the timeline click and drag to correct If you started a new project and selected the ringtone option, you should see a yellow bar (loop indicator) in the timeline. This indicates the length of your ringtone. Ringtones can be up to 00:40 in length. Extend the loop indicator to the desired length, and edit the section you want using the edit window. You may like to increase the volume to boost the sound level before exporting do this in the track listing on the left hand side. Go to Share>send ringtone to iTunes - This will then automatically save the file, and if youre an iPhone user (and why wouldnt you be?!), next time you sync your phone the ringtone will be copied over to the ringtone section of your phone.
