• Create a new song, and choose ‘strings’, or ‘smart strings’ on an older iPad.

• Experiment with different ways of playing the sounds. Get pizzicato (plucked) sounds by lightly tapping, and arco (bowed) sounds with short and long finger flicks.

• Use one or more parts, and experiment with switching string instruments on and off.

• Experiment with changing the key. Try a minor key for a different sound.

• Add other instruments. Try unusual instruments such as the chinese percussion kit for extra sounds.

• You can use any chord progression you like, and try varying the tempo and adding sections.

• Use ‘chords’ and the autoplay feature to create your rhythm guitar part first.

• Experiment with using a one, two of three fingers on the strips to get different chord autoplay patterns.

• Make sure you choose a rock style drummer.

• Keep their style appropriate with loud volume and suitable choice of drums.

• Add a fill region at the end if you wish.

• For bass, choose ‘picked bass’ or another bass which is suitable for a rock style.

• As with guitar, experiment with the autoplay feature using one, two or three fingers on each strip.

• Make sure you create a new guitar track for the lead guitar.

• Switch the guitar from ‘chords’ to ‘notes’.

• Select the ‘scale’: and choose ‘minor pentatonic’. ‘Minor blues’ will also work for this chord pogression.

• Begin by choosing a lighter style drummer who will be suited to jazz.

• Set swing to ‘1/8th swing heavy’.

• Turn off bass and snare drums in the beat - leave only the cymbals on.

• Choose ‘Upright’ bass, and leave autoplay setting OFF.

• Move up and down on the chord strips over the given chord progression, adding in some swung notes.

• When recorded go to track view, choose quantise and quantise to ‘1/8th swing heavy’.

• Use the same chord progression as in task B above.

• Play sparsely - jazz piano players don’t play chords on every beat.

• Don’t forget to change the ‘G’ chord to ‘G7’ by clicking the settings and choosing ‘edit chords’.

• in the older version of GarageBand, you’ll find sampler as a separate item in the main menu. In the newer version, you’ll find ‘Sampler’ as a sub-item of the Keyboard instrument.

• Press the start button and record a single note of audio.. Trim it back, and then play the instrument using the keyboard at the bottom of the screen.

• Remember that the sampler records one sound, and makes that sound into music with the keyboard. Therefore, concentrate on capturing one perfect sound.

• After you have recorded it trim the sound back with the yellow bracket.

• Use any of your previous projects, or create a new one using prepared loops.

• Like any tool, remember to use this tastefully, and only where appropriate.

• Use CHORDS mode on the Pipa for an accompaniment. Experiment with the tremolo control in the bottom right hand corner. You could also use an autoplay pattern if you wish.

• Use NOTES mode on the Erhu to create a melody, or alternatively you may prefer to use NOTES mode on the Pipa. Utilize as many of the controls as you can for vibrato, grace notes and trills.

• Add whichever instruments you wish. If you’re using chords, make sure you keep the chord pattern the same as for your traditional instruments.

• Begin by choosing the live loops option, and clicking on ‘new’.

• Click the plus sign on the side of the pallette and choosing ‘instruments’, and then choose ‘drummer’ from the menu.

• With bass, try using NOTES method, but you can use CHORDS and the autoplayer if you are struggling with playing your own riff.

• You can use any instruments you wish, and use guitars or keyboards with autoplay if you would like to.

• Keep loops on one chord each, and that way you can change chords on the live loops pallette.

• Use the labels at the bottom of the live loops pallette to keep track of which loops are using which chord.

• When you are ready, press record at the top of your live loops pallette to record your piece into the tracks mode.

• Think about the form of the piece, and keep your changes in a logical progression.

• Begin by choosing the live loops option, and clicking on ‘new’. Click the plus sign on the side of the pallette, choose ‘instruments’, and then choose ‘sampler’ from the keyboard menu option.

• Sample each sound on a new track 1) Bass drum: ‘b’ as in ‘boots’ 2) Hi-hat: ‘t’ 3) Snare drum: ‘k’ as in ‘king’

• Begin the same way as the drum part, by choosing ‘instruments’ and ‘sampler’.

• Sing a single note into the sampler - use the syllable ‘doh’, and make it sound like a single pluck of a guitar string.

• When you have a sample recorded, create a bass riff using the keyboard, using any scale you wish. Minor blues or minor pentatonic work well for this activity.

• Begin by clicking the plus sign next to an empty row, choosing ‘instruments’ and ‘audio recorder’

• Record only one or two bars. Make it sound rhythmic and work with your drum and bass parts.

• Once it has been recorded, experiment with effects. Your goal is to make it sound like an instrument, rather than a voice.

• On your iPad, go to the ‘settings’ app. Choose ‘sounds’ from the left hand column, and then ‘ringtone’ to bring up the list of ringtones on your device.

• Experiment with all the different keyboard sounds available on your iPad.

• Keep the pattern to between 8-16 beats, and use what you’ve learned in task A about what makes a good ringtone.

• Edit with the piano roll editor to make the pattern perfect, then loop it over 8 bars.

• Save your file and name it. Then, with it selected on the ‘My Songs’ screen, click the sharing icon, which looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it. From there you should have an option to export as a ringtone, which will make it appear on the ringtones list on this device. You can also then connect your iPad to a computer and access it through iTunes file sharing to move it to another device.
