HOW USEFUL IS IT HOW USEFUL IS IT LABELLING PEOPLE AS NEDS?LABELLING PEOPLE AS NEDS?

People shouldn't label someone as a Ned just because they wear tracksuits and Burberry. Nowadays, people are blaming young people for the problems in society. Labelling someone as a Ned is not a good idea because if everyone says they are a Ned they will start to live up to the name

WHAT IS A NED ??WHAT IS A NED ??

• Ned is a term applied to certain young people in Scotland, like the term chav in England. The stereotypical view of a Ned is a white adult male, of working class background, who wears fake Burberry, who gets involved in hooliganism, petty criminality, bad behaviour, underage drinking and smoking or general anti-social behaviour. They are often assumed to be unemployed.

CHILD POVERTY FACTSCHILD POVERTY FACTSWhen Labour took office in

1999, Scotland had the worst levels of child and pensioner poverty in the

EU.There has been been

significant progress since then but now it looks like

the government will struggle to meet its target of halving child poverty by 2010 and eradicating it by

2020.According to the Child Poverty Action Group,

there are 250,000 children in Scotland living in

poverty.

Glasgow has come out as the worst city in Scotland for child

poverty. The findings are revealed in a new survey

which looks at the support and help which is available for

families across the country.

GANG STORY (1)GANG STORY (1)

Mums on patrol to take on the gangsTWO brave mothers are confronting gangs of neds in their home town.Mum-of-three Maureen and friend Fiona are patrolling the streets of Irvine

seven nights a week. The women, who asked that their surnames not be disclosed for fear of

reprisals, have been attacked with fireworks and threatened with baseball bats and golf clubs.

But they have promised to continue their patrols as long as children, including their own, need protection.

Their three-mile checks, with Fiona's Alsatian, takes up to three hours every night. They confront any gangs they see and use a mobile to call police if they sense trouble.

Maureen, of Girdle Toll, decided to take action after a relative was knifed last year and needed 15 stitches.

She wants more police to patrol the area and a youth centre to give kids something to do.

They are the social networks that are supposed to link up friends all around the world. But violent troublemakers are abusing websites like Bebo, MySpace and Facebook to set up fights. A user who posts videos onto the website YouTube claims to organise fights to settle differences - and invites others to watch. It is done through online social networks and it is happening all over the country. Now, with the summer holidays underway, police officers around Scotland are scouring these sites looking for the next one. However, it is not just school children.

Football hooligans are arranging battles between rival gangs across Britain. Some Bebo pages hide their intentions - but they are easily found.
