Plan of action chalked out by the institute in the beginning of the
year towards quality enhancement
SECTION – A
As a follow up measure to the recommendations of NAAC Peer team, a meeting of the heads of the Departments of RIM. Cooperation, Extension Education, and Economics was covered and it was decided to frame the guidelines for the introduction of Management programme to add professional dimension to the existing programmes. Programmes have been revisited with a view to evolve a holistic approach, keeping the roles played by other rural universities in mind.
Cooperation • To redesign the curriculum at UG level and change the nomenclature from B.A (Cooperation) to B.Com (Cooperation)
• To introduce MBA (Cooperative Management) as a unique specialization in collaboration with other MBA departments.
• To take measures as part of outreach programme to form consumer clubs in schools and colleges in the district.
Economics
• To design a curriculum for MBA in Small Business Management • To prepare power point presentations for teaching purposes.
Gandhian Thought and Peace Science • To strengthen the new programme of M.A in Human Resource and Conflict Management.
• To arrange home seminars and dialogue with constructive workers and Gandhian activists to enthuse students to take up social work as their career.

Rural Industries and Management • Five training programmes on skill Development on Bakery products were organized for 265 women self help groups members from the Nilgiris and Dindigul Districts.
• 1,100 weavers underwent training in improved methodology of weaving. • Knowledge of students is upscaled by designing new programmes, introducing new courses, revising the syllabi periodically, and providing options for students to choose from a package of courses.
• Focus of research is centred around contemporary problems confronting the communities around Gandhigram and the society at large, with the aim of generating scientific and pragmatic solutions.
• Disadvantaged groups in the communities around Gandhigram and the general community are constantly supported and guided in conscientizing them to become informed citizens.
• Current developments of the contemporary society are debated by Faculty from across the state and country in specific fora, their proceedings documented for public use and policy recommendations are forwarded to the change agents.
• Linkages established with Government, research and training institutions, industry, NGOs and Funding partners consolidate the academic, research and community service programmes.

Biology • Seminar on “Advances in solid waste management” was organized. • Training in technology transfer on mushroom technology was imparted to SC/ST population.
• Three candidates were awarded Ph.D. degree. • Students were involved in internship at different research institutes and industries viz., Sanat Spirulina Production, Kodairoad, Aavin Dairy, Madurai, Rajashree Sugar, Vaigai Dam, Vijay Medical Lab, Madurai, Central Cotton Research Institute, Coimbatore, Sriram Coconut Products, Batlagundu, and Poultry Farm, Melur.
Chemistry
• A meet on electron transfer process was organized. • An Inter-collegiate workshop on organic spectroscopy was organized. • Studies on the use of polymeric compounds in defluoridation was initiated. • Electro catalytic and electro chromic properties of lanthanide complexes modified electrodes were developed.
• Community defluoridation units were installed. • Upgradation of instrumental facilities was undertaken.
Computer Science and Applications • Organized Board of Studies Meeting to revise the M.Sc-IT syllabus • On-going research on Image Processing was strengthened. • Invited guest lectures on new technologies to the staff and students of the department

Extension Education • The Department caters to the co-curricular and extra-curricular needs and interests of the students. The Department also coordinates the extension programmes of various Departments of GRI.
• The theme of the current year VPP is “Towards Realizing the Millennium Development Goals”. The Department has been responsible for meticulously planning and executing the various activities designed under the scheme. • Nine Training programmes were conducted to disseminate the latest technologies
• Four faculty members acted as chairpersons for preparation of textbook for Vocational Agriculture Stream under Directorate of School Education and published by Tamilnadu Textbook Corporation, Chennai. In total ten books were published in various branches of Agriculture such as crop production, Spices and Plantation Crops, Sericulture and Apiculture, Dairying etc.
• Established Centre for Jatropha and Biofuel promotions at an outlay Rs.88,00,000 funded by UGC, New Delhi.

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction
• Inter disciplinary / collaborative MBA (Cooperative Management) (PG level) was started.
• A 4-semester M.A. Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies (under UGC-Innovative Programme of Teaching and Research in Emerging and Interdisciplinary Areas) is being offered from July 2005.
• Introduced UGC sponsored Career Oriented Programme on Certificate Course on Maintenance of Farm Power and Equipments – 1 year – 2 semesters under CBCS.
• Revised Diploma in Agriculture Syllabus and introduced RAWE (Rural Agricultural Work Experience) component – 6 credits for learning field experience.
• Board of Studies in Sociology revised the syllabus of various courses in M.A. in Sociology and M.Phil in Development Sociology and introduced new courses on Development Sociology, Social Entrepreneurship, Guidance & Counseling, NGO Management, Rural Development Environmental Management etc.
• Interdisciplinary programmes on Geoinformatics, Micro Finance; Field visits, Field report.
• Vocation based multimedia literacy teaching methods for nine vocations prepared for offering through Non-formal mode by Dept. of Adult Continuing Education and Extension.
• Separate field based course on Enterprise Practice on Cooperative Management was introduced by department of Cooperation.
• The curriculum for BBA(RIM) and MBA (RIM) Programmes was designed as per the requirements of the reputed companies for developing managerial skills.
• The thrust area of Hotel Administration was suitably designed in B.Sc Catering Science and Hotel
• Administration Programmes. An innovative programme of Diploma in Labour Management was designed for man power development.
• Introduction of course on Rural Resources and Opportunities Profiling - a full-fledged field based course for all the MBA programmes
• Preparation of manual on MDG and circulated among the participants of Village Placement Programme (VPP) / Village and Social Responsibilities (VSR).
• Restructured the VPP by incorporating the VSR components. • Method and Result Demonstration to Students on various Agriculture and Animal Husbandry practices
4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started
• The department of Biology offered Inter disciplinary courses to other students of PG / UG programmes.
• The Department of Sociology restructured M.A. Sociology and M.Phil Development Sociology.
• Many career oriented programmes like Applied population and health services, project planning methodologies, actuarial sciences, maintenance of farm power and equipment, insurance business, salesmanship, labour management were offered.

• M.A. in Comparative Literature in Cultural Studies was offered by the Faculty of English and Foreign Languages.
• B.Tech. habitat was offered by Rural Technology Centre. • Industrial mathematics with computer applications, an M.Sc. Tech. Programme was offered by Department of Mathematics.
• A certificate course on micro finance and micro enterprise, yoga, guidance and counseling were also offered.
• A Post Diploma course on commercial horticulture was offered. • The Nomenclature of M.Sc. Home Science Extension was changed into M.Sc. Extension and Community Development.
• The Computer Science department introduced inter-disciplinary courses on the following for various programmes.

5. Examination reforms implemented
• GRU was the first university to introduce Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in Tamil Nadu State, with its inbuilt options for flexible curriculum structure and continuous student assessment process.
• Cumulative Formative Assessment (CFA) through monthly tests in a centralized manner, and the End Semester Examinations (ESE) are time-tested evaluation methods to make the students work constantly.
• Third valuation facility in the ESE, Re-test in the CFA, and one-time supplementary examinations for final year students add to the opportunities available for students.

• USIC undertakes the servicing and maintenance of all Electronic Gadgets, Computers and other peripherals, not covered under Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC), belonging to the various university departments and sections.
• The Dept. of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology generated a sum of about Rs. 40,000 through conducting coaching classes for Tamilnadu Professional college Entrance Examinations. A sum Rs. 100,000 was generated by addition intake of PG students on self support basis.
• An amount of Rs.21,750 was generated through Training Programme organized for women Self Help Group on bakery products sponsored by DRDA, Dindigul
• Rs. 1,20,000 was generated as institutional charges for conducting Weavers Training from Department of Handloom Textiles, Government of Tamil Nadu The total earnings out of consultancy, institutional charges and self

23. Courses in which student assessment of teachers is introduced
and the action taken on student feedback
• Departmental committee meeting consisting of all the course teachers and students representative from each programme was conducted in each semester and the feed back from the students in respect of improvement of infrastructure and other academic facilities were sent to the academic section for necessary action.
• A Senior Faculty from other Department chairs the meeting by the close of every semester.
• Student feedback is also obtained on the courses and on teachers in the prescribed proforma.

31. Activities and support from the Alumni Association
• The alumni of the Institution help the present students by offering advice for placements and projects.
• Alumni of Computer Science and Applications department is actively involved in supporting the inter-collegiate meet ‘interfACE’
• Guest lectures are delivered on Current Trends in the industries by the Alumni
• Alumni of the institute participate
in the policy making by being members of the Senate elected from the graduates constituency.
32. Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher
• Notwithstanding the lack of a registered Parent Teacher Association, the parents have interaction with teachers of the Department o initially during admission of their wards o during the completion of the course and o after graduation of their wards
• They share the o educational antecedents and ambitions of their wards initially o difficulties faced by their ward and / or suggestions of parents during the study period
o employment requirements and preferences of their ward after completion of course
• A small segment of students hail from nearby rural areas where our Faculty regularly visit for extension programmes. Parents of these wards provide the extension team with full cooperation and support in organizing village camps, conducting surveys and other activities.
33. Health Services
• The University Health Centre, provides medical care and counseling on health. The centre is kept open from 04.00 p.m. to 06.00 p.m. every day.
• A team of one doctor and two nurses from Kasthurba Hospital, Gandhigram visit the centre and offer service to students and staff.
• All sections of students and staff - hostellers and day scholars, research scholars, teaching and non-teaching benefit by the services.
• Yoga centre organized Yoga Therapeutical sessions

36. Students achievements and awards
• Five students won the best NSS Volunteer award and competed in cultural fetes in various Universities in Tamil Nadu and won prizes
• 100 % placement by students of Agriculture Faculty • 100 % placement by MBA students of Rural Project Management • Ph.D. scholar of Applied Research has been awarded Jawaharlal Nehru National Fund Scholarship and Women Young Scientist Scholarship of DST, New Delhi.
• CAPART, (Ministry of Rural Development), Govt. of India organized campus interview for selection of Young Professionals among outgoing Masters degree students i.e. Sociology, Rural Development, Public Administration, Rural Project Management, Home Science five students were selected.
• Students of M.C.A and M.Sc. IT have won a number of prizes in the Inter-Collegiate Technical Meets / Symposia organized by various Universities and Colleges.
37. Activities of Guidance and Counseling unit
• Faculty has constant interaction with the students and provides counseling and guidance regularly, especially at times of critical need.
• Gurukula system practiced by GRI enables each Faculty to closely monitor and guide a small team of students for individual attention.
• In addition, the Students counseling / Placement and Career Guidance unit, attached to Dept. of ACE & E serves students of High School and rural Youth, besides GRI students through the following programmes.
• Through students activities clubs career guidance programmes were organized.
• Dr.M.G.Sethuraman, Reader in Chemistry and Dr.S.Lakshmi, Reader in English organized a one day Workshop on Career Opportunities during the second week of October 2006.
• The Dept. of Gandhian Thought offers counseling services to the students of GRI.
• Through Gurukula meetings the students are guided and proper counseling is made possible through one to one interaction.
38. Placement services provided to students
• Placement Bureau registers interested students for personality development and placement.
• Campus interview is arranged every year for students of various streams. • Corporates, IT firms, NGOs, Funding agencies, Teacher Training Institutes and Schools avail the services of the Bureau.
• Certain Faculty and Departments also have separate Placement officers. • Department of Computer Science and Applications facilitate their MCA and M.Sc. (IT) graduates and have achieved 90% placement.
• Department of Rural Development assists their M.Sc (Geo informatics) students with placement.
• All the students of Diploma Agriculture programme 2005-2006 batch got placement in various companies through campus interviews

• The PG/UG Chemistry students were encouraged to attend off-campus placement interviews conducted by the Pharma Industries in Madurai/Chennai.
39. Development programmes for Non-teaching staff
• Training in internet browsing was conducted at GRI computer centre in two batches to the non-teaching staff.
• E-circular training was given to the non-teaching staff upto the cadre of assistant from LDC in the GRI Computer Centre. Also arranged a programme on Visual Basic to the non-teaching staff of the institute.

• Community meet and morning assembly • Promoting inter religious prayer and Shramdhan activities in villages. • Working in partnership with NGO’s ,Department, Sister Institutions, Parent bodies
• Dissemination of information to NGOS ,colleges, and schools. • Encouraging PG students to go in for Summer Placement at higher Education & Research Institute
• Gurukula system • Village Placement Programme incorporating values and social responsibilities.
• Samaj Shilpi Programme. • Yoga centre created awareness on Yoga among students. • The Department library of chemistry is kept open upto 10.00 pm on all days facilitating better opportunities for students to refer books.

• The institute has close collaboration with Ford foundation which funds several of our initiatives.
• The Institute has collaboration with MS Swaminathan Research Foundation and carries out the extension projects.
• The National Institute of Rural Development has selected GRI has resource Institution for conducting Leadership Training for grass root level functionaries and leaders.
• The Dept. of Chemistry and Physics work in close collaboration with Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi.
• The faculty members serve in National / International agencies like the Planning commission, TWAD, Rajiv Gandhi drinking water mission, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency as members / consultants.
• GRI with the help of CAPART has been instrumental in building the capacity of NGOs in the field of preparation of micro plan using PRA and Logical frame work analysis.
• The Faculty members undertake projects from UGC, CSIR, DST, DBT, KSSR, Ford Foundation, AAPI, USA, Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission and other Governmental and Non Governmental agencies.
• The faculty of Agriculture is having linkage with FORD foundation New Delhi, ICAR, COMPAS ETC Foundation, Netherlands and State departments

• The Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension attempted to impart literacy through a method called Morphological Sequence and a primer developed by Dr. T. Karunakaran, Vice chancellor of GRI.
• An attempt was made to produce mass learning materials like CDs and picture book for dissemination of information to neo-literates.

• The academic input into the students resulted in good pass percentages. The average percentage of pass was 79.29%.
• The staff members besides taking care of the teaching assignment have also involved themselves in research, and Extension resulting in the publication of books/research articles in National and International journals.

Plans of the Institution for the next year
Measures are constantly taken for institutional functioning towards quality enhancement through internalization of quality culture and institutionalization of best practices. Views and suggestions of all the stakeholders are taken into account in the process of planning. Keeping the needs of society and the context of liberalization and globalization GRI takes all efforts to sustain a quality system for the improvement of academic and administrative performance of the institute. The plans for the departments for ushering in quality are given hereinunder.
FACULTY OF RURAL SOCIAL SCIENCES
Cooperation
• To revisit the existing curriculum for UG and PG programmes • To depute staffs to attend training / refresher courses • To organize national level seminars / workshops at Gandhigram • To conduct training programme to the staff of the deparment of cooperation / cooperative institutions as a part of the extension activity
Economics
• To organize guest lectures in such areas like econometrics and environmental economics.
Gandhian Thought and Peace Science
• To offer Five year integrated programme to develop a cadre of people to address various social and organizational issues in Gandhian line. .
• To orient the research towards rural reconstruction and the various fields of Gandhian idealogies.
• To encourage students to undertake research projects on different spectrums of rural issues.
• To organize exposure visits to successful community experiments and NGOs and other organizations in order to link classroom teaching with field realities.
Political Science and Development Administration
• To establish smart classrooms • To organize National workshops on Role of Panchayat in Disaster Mitigation and Management at Chennai
• To organize a National workshop on Globalization and Decentralization at Chennai
