The National Aeronauticsand Space Administration hasquinoa from Bolivia in its menu.

Its personnel recently had adelicious quinoa breakfast, thanks to Chef Ana Chipana.

Chipana proved that quinoais high in protein, lacks gluten, and is tolerant of dry soil at JohnF. Kennedy Space Center, lo-cated in Cape Canaveral, Fla., inNovember 2012. Three monthslater, she also served her bakedproduct in a lunch hosted by theUnited Nations where its Secre-tary-General Ban Ki-moon waspresent including the Bolivianpresident Evo Morales. The UNdeclared 2013 the InternationalYear of Quinoa.

Although quinoa was only

eaten in native highlands com-

munities and poor urbanneighborhoods in the past, currently, the United Statesis the main buyer. Boliviais the world’s top producerof quinoa, producing51,000 tons a year, most ofwhich is exported. Ac-cording to the Bolivian In-stitute of Foreign Trade, quinoa fetched $3,000 aton in 2012.

Chipana was born inBolivia and arrived toUnite States with her hus-band Ramiro 14 years ago. Herfirst jobs were cleaning housesand taking care of children andthe elderly. After her training inreal state, import and exportproducts, vegetarian food, nutri-tion and administration, shemanages her own food business,Wara Quinoa.

“The reason that NASAwas interested on my participa-tion was because the United Na-tions declared 2013 as the‘International Year of la Quinoa’and the invitation from the Boli-vian government,” Chipana saidrecently. “According to NASAchefs, they consume quinoa intheir diet; they do not need fur-

ther explanations because theyknow it very well and appreciateit.”

The U.S. market is stockedwith several varieties of quinoa.Although Chipana has madeseveral quinoa recipes, she alsorecommends trying Pop Quinoa,Quinoa Soup and “Pito deQuinoa.”

Modern technology is also

part of Bolivia. This South

American country launched its

first telecommunication satel-

lite on Dec. 20, 2013, and it will

help reduce communication

costs for Bolivia and will im-

prove television and internet for

those living in rural areas, ac-

cording to Bolivian Space

Agency.

The Bolivian satellite

launched in China's southwest

Sichuan province from Xi-chang Satellite Launch Centrewas named Tupac Katari, whowas a Native Aymara hero thatfought against Spanish Colo-nizers during the 18th century.

Crowds gathered in thecentral square in the capital LaPaz, also, and thousands of Bo-livians around the world fol-lowed via television to see thelaunch of the satellite and thepresence of President EvoMorales.

Reports indicate that Bo-

livia financed the telecommuni-

cations satellite with a $302

million credit from the China

Development Bank.

Bolivian satellite Túpac

Katari concluded all stages of

testing and is ready to start

commercial operations in

April, said the Minister of pub-

lic works, Vladimir Sánchez,

who said the implementation

will lower Internet rates by 60

percent and mobile phone rates

by 20 percent.

If roller derby is an attractive sport, the Tall City Roller Betties team is moreattractive because it represents Midlandand Odessa in the current Women’s FlatTrack Derby Association.

The TCRB team is also known asBombshell Betties. Its players started toput on skates, pads and helmets to skateback in April 2010.

“We want to develop a family-ori-ented league of unique, strong, independ-ent and beautiful women where mothers, wives, students, career women and derbysisters can inspire other women andyoung ladies to push beyond theirdreams,” states the TCRB’s missionstatement.

The Betties placed third in theUnited States of America Roller Sports,Regional Tournament and they foughthard in the USARS National Champi-onships that took place in Tulsa, Okla.

The Betties are known for their in-volvement with several local charities in-cluding the West Texas Food Bank andhost fundraiser bouts for local programs. They are looking for a permanent TCRBfacility to hold their practices and bouts;it would allow them to invite otherleagues to compete from all over thecountry.

“Having our own practice facilitywould also allow us to become more in-volved with the community,” TCRBteam says. “Involving the community isimportant to the Betties because it takesthe help of everyone to make a successfulroller derby league.”

The Betties did a successful presen-tation in Lubbock on March 15. The at-tractive travel team scored more pointsthan the local team. The rematch Bomb-shell Betties vs. West Texas Roller Dollz

is scheduled for April 12 at Commemo-rative Air Force main hangar located be-tween Midland and Odessa.

“The Dollz are a strong team, and itwas a great start to our season. We'vehad some changes in players and are in-corporating many new skaters, so theMarch bout was a good way for us togauge where our playing was at thattime,” said Hanna Carter, the leader ofthe Betties.

The Betties practice every Tuesday

and Thursday night from 7-9 PM. Thefirst Tuesday of every month is their"Open Recruitment Night" and they areat the rink from 6:30 to 9 PM. Although the U.S. Men's National Team played with newly de-signed uniforms, the friendly match in Arizona was an indication ofwhat improvements should be done before the World Cup in Brazilfrom June 12 to July 13.
