"How much has summer rush changed since I was in the house?" This question is often asked, and the answer is that many things have changed. Many things will continue to change, but the most important things remain the same. One of the things that has remained constant since summer rush first started at OU is the need for quality rush chairmen who share the tradi- tional ideas and values of the Gamma Phi Chap- ter. There is also a need for broad-based alumni support through active participation in the sum- mer rush process and critical financial assis- tance. The chapter has taken the first step toward a successful rush in 2008 by electing another out- standing Rush Team: Head Rush Chairman William Prueitt (Cascia Hall '10); Assistant Rush Chairmen Ryan Buck (Dallas' 10); Peter Schmidt (Heritage Hall '11) and Caleb Green (Ardmore' 11); and Rush Secretary Matt Moel- lers (Cascia Hall' 10). Each year presents new challenges for the active members and alumni who support Gamma Phi's rush program. Last year, Gamma Phi's alumni responded enthusiastically to the call for help, and the Betas were able to host 16 rush functions in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Nor- man, Ardmore, Edmond, Dallas and Houston to name a few. These events allowed last year's rush team to get their foot in the door early and often, and were a key to signing another out- standing pledge class this past fall. This year, the rush team's goal is to have the opportunity to hold 20 alumni-hosted functions between the official start of summer rush on June 1, 2008 and the conclusion of summer rush in mid- August 2008. The team needs to host at least two alumni events each week during the ap- proximate 10-week period of summer rush, so many alumni volunteers will be needed. The present day format of summer rush re- quires extraordinary efforts on the part of the rush chairmen. Done right, a competitive rush campaign entails substantial financial costs. On April 3, 2005, Gamma Phi lost a dear friend and brother, Patrick James Frensley, to a tragic running accident.

Patrick was devoted to all aspects of his life; but especially to the great principles that form our brotherhood. He was be-friended by all and loved by many. As many can attest to, two of Patrick's favorite pastimes were running and helping others.

When the chapter began considering ways to honor their fallen brother, we quickly decided on a 5K run which would combine Patrick's passions and would be

fitting to his growing legacy. To honor the wonderful life of our fallen

brother, the chapter inaugurated The Pat-rick James Frensley Memorial 5k Run (the “Frensley 5K”). This year’s Frensley 5K was held on Saturday, March 29, 2008, with approximately 124 participating run-ners and 30 volunteers.

The proceeds go to The American Heart Association, Second Chance Animal Shel-ter, and The Frensley Foundation. The Frensley Foundation was started this year as way to carry on Frensley's legacy by

offering scholarships to applicable students at the University of Oklahoma

I would like to thank all of the alumni and other donors who have shown support. With your help we have made this event a tremendous success. Thank you again for giving us such wonderful support.

Alumnus and Brother, Summer seems to have come and gone way too fast, but with that comes great excitement for the return to 800 Chautauqua. From studying abroad in Ox-ford to warding off bears at a New Mexico Scout Ranch, it seems as if every Brother has

had quite an exciting summer. The up-coming Fall Semester looks to be a fan-tastic one as the house comes off a first place victory in grades last semester. The Rush Team has been hard at work and looks forward to the next few final

weeks. I want to thank you all for your continuing support throughout Rush; the barbeques I have attended this summer have all been exceptional! Be looking out for emails regarding the upcoming tailgates for this year’s football season. Finally, do not hesitate to contact me if you ever need anything or even want to tour the house. My email address is [email protected] and my phone number is 405-826-2794. I am excited for this year and look forward to seeing you at the tailgates!

House Staff

Essential to the smooth running of 800 Chautauqua are Irene Lambert (at left), who has served as the Cook since Fall of 2004, and Shelly Jones (at right), who has served as House-keeper since Fall of 2003.

Sue Overton Housemother since Fall 1997

Gamma Phi undoubtedly has the best fra-ternity housemother at the University of Oklahoma! Sue Overton has served as the Gamma Phi Housemother (a/k/a House Di-rector) since August of 1997. During that time she has been selected as House Mom of the Year at OU and has served as President of the OU House Directors Club.

A graduate of Wetumka High School and Oklahoma State University (B.S., Education), Mom Overton taught Home Economics at Oklahoma City's Classen, Central and North-east high schools. Her late husband Claudell Overton was an All-American athlete at East Central State College in Ada, a professional basketball and baseball player, and a success-ful basketball coach at Addington, Edmond, Drumright and Capitol Hill High Schools and Bacone College. Her son Bo was the high

school basketball Player of the Year in Okla-homa, a three-year starter on the OU basket-ball team, and an assistant to OU women's basketball coach Sherri Coale. Bo is now the General Manager and Head coach for the Chicago Sky of the Women's National Bas-ketball Association. Sue also has two daugh-ters, Dee Solomon and Cara Overton, and five grandchildren.

In addition to planning and hostessing for various social events, including Parents' Weekend, Homecoming and alumni func-tions, Mom Overton oversees the house kitchen (managing the house staff, planning meals, purchasing food and supplies, etc.), provides etiquette instruction to members and pledges, co-ordinates repairs and house main-tenance with the Corporation President, and counsels members and pledges when re-quested.

ber of highly qualified rushees from out-of-state (especially Texas), and the chap-ter's rush efforts can no longer focus on Oklahoma alone. Historically, our rush chairmen have been required to recruit the major metropolitan areas in Oklahoma and also the smaller Oklahoma cities and towns, which have consistently sent qual-ity young men to the Beta House at OU. In recent years, Texas has been added to the mix for summer rush, and the chapter must become more active "south of the border" to compete with the other top fra-ternities. Every year there has been an increase in enrollment of Texas freshmen at OU, and more and more Gamma Phi legacies from Texas choose to attend OU. Dallas-area rush events have become com-monplace, and the chapter held its first "official" rush party in the Houston area in 2007.

To continue to build on successful rush efforts of the past several years, this year's rush team needs three things: (l) referrals of qualified young men who may be par-ticipating in fraternity rush in 2008 (please include, at a minimum, name, high school, telephone number, high school GPA and ACT/SAT score); (2) financial contribu-tions to fund the many expenses associated with rush, which begin with phone bills in the early spring and end with new pledge t-shirts handed out on bid night in late Au-gust; of course, fuel costs have drastically increased the price of quality rush; and (3) volunteers to sponsor alumni-hosted events during the summer.

Most alumni understand the necessity for referrals and financial contributions,

both of which are desperately needed and greatly appreciated. But I am often asked, "What is involved in hosting a summer rush function?"

The first thing you should know is that they do not remotely resemble the "beer bashes" of earlier generations. For exam-ple, IFC rules strictly prohibit the service of alcohol and the presence of women at these events. Today, these events are more reserved affairs. They are typically casual "backyard" or "poolside" barbeques that take place on an evening selected by the host, generally between Wednesday and Saturday. The functions start around 6:30 p.m. and are usually over by 9:00 p.m. The host typically serves something sim-ple, like burgers or barbeque, although some of our alums have used catering ser-vices. Attendees include 10 to 30 rushees who live in the host's area, the rush team, a few other active members, and any other alumni the host chooses to invite. These functions offer a chance for the young men to meet and greet and allow the rush team to interface with many more young men than they could otherwise. They also can be a good excuse for alums to get together with their Beta friends and re-live the "good ol' days" at 800 Chautauqua.

Considering that nearly 1,000 young men go through rush each year at OU, it would be impossible for the rush team to meet, much less get to know, even a frac-tion of the rushees without the benefit of alumni-hosted gatherings.

The alumni-hosted functions usually require lead time and co-ordination. Obvi-ously, the rush team would prefer to sched-ule events so that travel distances and

times are not un-reasonable.

If you think you might be interested in supporting rush by hosting a func-tion next summer, please contact me as soon as possible.

Rush Advisor’s Report (cont.)

Bryan Luff Named General Fraternity Leadership Consultant The Beta Theta Pi General Fraternity has

announced that Bryan Luff ‘09 has been selected to join its team of Leadership Consultants for a two-year term beginning in the 2009-10 academic year. Luff, from Oklahoma City (P.C. North), has been among the Chapter’s most valued leaders, having served as House Manager, Treas-urer and founder of the Annual Patrick Frensley Memorial 5K Run. He also initi-ated the formation of The Patrick James Frensley Foundation, a 501(c)(3) founda-tion which is now the beneficiary of the

Frensley 5K. Leadership Consultant appointments are

very selective, as the General Fraternity views them as Beta’s key ambassadors. As a Leadership Consultant, Luff will as-sist Beta chapters in a designated national region in a broad range of leadership, edu-cational, recruitment and developmental matters. He will also have important re-sponsibilities relating to the establishment and development of new Beta colonies. These activities entail working directly with students, alumni and universities to

advance Beta Theta Pi’s initiatives. Remarkably, Luff is the third Gamma

Phi to be appointed as a Leadership Con-sultant by the General Fraternity over the last four years. Joe Kokojan ‘06 (Hinton) and Brad Brown ‘07 (Tulsa Cascia Hall), both former Chapter presidents, also have been selected to serve as Leadership Con-sultants. This is a strong testament to the respect Gamma Phi enjoys nationwide for the men it recruits and develops at 800 Chautauqua.

Beta Theta Pi Foundation of Oklahoma, Inc. has reached an early milestone in its short history. Our endowment now ex-ceeds $100,000 due to the latest major gift made by a Beta family. Mark (‘73) and Anne Harris established the Harris Family Scholarship earlier this year. As an alum-nus, Mark has served as a Trustee of the Beta Theta Pi Corporation and he super-vised the repair and restoration of the Chapter House from 1999 through 2001. At the same time, Anne served as a very active and innovative Parents’ Club Presi-dent from 1997 through 1999. Their sons Ryan (‘99), a prior President of the Chap-ter, and Tyler (‘01) are members of Gamma Phi.

When thanked for the Harris family’s generous contribution to the Foundation, Mark responded for his family, saying: “The experience of being a Beta at OU was so meaningful for my sons and me that we are excited to be able to help other young men who might not be able to man-age the obligations of the fraternity with-out financial assistance. We also want to encourage future Betas to excel academi-cally and in chapter and campus leadership roles.”

As previously mentioned, the purpose of the Foundation is to provide financial as-sistance in the form of scholarships which

may be awarded to address financial need or to recognize outstanding academic achievement and/or exemplary leadership. The individual or individuals who create an endowed scholarship will have the op-portunity to input their desires regarding the purpose of the scholarship.

The Harris Family Scholarship repre-sents the third permanently endowed scholarship established with the Founda-tion. The other two are the Patrick James Frensley Memorial Scholarship and the Class of 1959 Scholarship. Last fall, the first of these scholarships were awarded to T.J. Hutchings (‘09), who received the second annual Patrick James Frensley Me-morial Scholarship, and Tyler Nunley (‘10) was awarded the first Class of 1959 Scholarship.

We hope those scholarships are only the beginning. Please consider establishing an endowed scholarship for Gamma Phi or join with your pledge class in creating a class endowed scholarship. If you need any information or assistance in this re-gard, please feel free to contact me, Zach Allen (‘85)(Corporation President) or Hank Ryan (‘72)(Archivist).

Even if not yet contributing to an en-dowed scholarship, please make a donation to the Foundation, because general contri-butions will be used for “Gamma Phi

Scholarships.” Anthony DeGiusti (‘09) and Koby Harrington (‘09) were recipients of those Scholarships last fall.

Thank you for your support of this very important program for the benefit of mem-bers and pledges of Gamma Phi Chapter.

2008 Beta Golf Tournament The 8th Annual Beta Theta Pi Alumni Golf Tournament

was held on Saturday, August 16th at the Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course in Norman. This year's event was composed of 21 teams and 89 golfers representing class years from 1952 to 2011

The event was chaired by tournament co-founder John Hillis ’82. Co-founder John Ritz ’71 focused on his game this year. Organizing and managing the tournament requires a significant amount of time and effort.

We would again like to thank Bret Chandler '82 and the Rib Crib Corporation for their continued sponsorship of the tournament as the lunch sponsor providing a complete barbe-cue spread for all participants and volunteers. The tourna-ment would not be the same without Bret and Rib Crib's gen-erous support for the 8th consecutive year.

Beverage sponsor was Link Barr ‘85. After Party Sponsor was SNB of OKC (Matt Pollock ‘02). Tee sponsors included Landon Publishing (Jim Langdon

‘73) and The Tolson Betas. Many thanks to all of the tournament sponsors! We look forward to the eighth annual tourney in summer

2008.

WOOGLIN ON CHAUTAUQUA

2007-2008 was another great year for Gamma Phi. Of course, cele-bration of the Chapter’s Centen-nial was the high-light of the year, as noted in our last newsletter. But Beta also closed out the spring on a strong note by decisively

winning grades with a 3.248 overall Chap-ter GPA - one of the highest in its history.

Our 2007-2008 Beta Donors campaign was also a huge success. That campaign raised $62,024 from 326 donors. This is a truly outstanding testament of support from our alumni which will do wonders to help us not only preserve but improve the Chapter House. We are continuing our efforts to make the House an even finer facility in many respects, and it wouldn’t be possible without this wonderful alumni support.

The Class of 1985 takes the honors for having the most donors, with 21. Kudos to the following Classes for having ten or more donors:

Class Donors 1985 21 1963 12 1971 12 1958 11 1972 11 1974 11 1979 11 1982 10 1984 10 1988 10

This year, we are focusing our improve-ments on the back yard area. The most important addition will be new stainless steel charcoal and gas Hasty-Bake grills, thanks to the generosity of Greg Wallace ‘78 and Hasty-Bake Corporation (founded by Earl G. Hastings, Jr. ‘41). Other reno-vations will include a paving stone patio around the grill area, new sidewalks, added landscaping and new decks near the bas-ketball court. Once complete, it will be a recreational venue second to none among other OU Greek houses.

Finally, as the OU football season ap-proaches, the Chapter looks forward to hosting our alumni on game days. In fact, the Chapter encourages alumni to make 800 Chautauqua their primary tailgating destination. An open bar will be again provided on each game day, together with

plenty of great food. If you come to Nor-man for a ball game, please do make time to visit the Beta House.

Yours in _ kai _,
