PatDiNizio is cominghome.Afterninemonths living in theRivieraHotel &Casi-no in Las Vegas, enduring the heat of thedesert, the lead singer of The Smither-eens will return to his native New Jerseyat the end of the month.

DiNizio spent those months in a one-man show called “Confessions of a RockStar,’’ which he performed six days aweek.

“I do a lot of Smithereens songs, talkabout the history of rock ‘n’ roll. I encour-age people to remember their roots. There’s a lot of humor in the show, whatit’s like to live the life of rock ‘n’ roll,” Di-Nizio said in a phone interview this week.

But, , it’s pureSmithereensat theGold-enNuggetSaturdaynight, a two-plushourshow of non-stop rock ‘n’ roll from morethan a dozen albums.

The genesis of “Confessions’’ began asa series of living-room concerts, acousticshows in private homes, some lasting aslong as three hours.

Dinizio was ahead of the curve on liv-ing-room shows. “I flatter myself that Ihelped pioneer the concept. I would goanywhere people wanted me. But it’s notenough to just do the songs,” he said.

Andy Choy, an executive of the Rivi-era, caught The Smithereens show at RedRocks Resort Las Vegas, tracked DiNiziodownandheard about the house concerts.“Hemade an offer I could not refuse,” theScotch Plains native said.

But ninemonths is a long time to live ina hotel.

“I’m anxious to get home to New Jer-sey,” he said. “I’d love to do a show likethis in Atlantic City if someonemakesmeoffer.”

Whether that happens or not, “Confes-sions’’ and The Smithereens remain twodifferent animals.

“Ninety percent of those who come tothe one-man show do not knowme or TheSmithereens. It’s rewarding to make be-lievers out of them, though,” he said.

On the other hand, The Smithereensshow is a sold-out event attended by peo-ple who grew upwith the band. “They gotmarried to our songs. We’ve been part oftheir life a long time.We look intomirror, they look like us, speak like us, dress likeus. We owe them everything,” DiNiziosaid.

Formed in 1980, The Smithereens per-form 30 to 40 shows a year. In addition toDiNizio, who sings lead and plays guitar, the group consists of Jim Babjak on gui-tar, MikeMesaros on bass and Dennis Di-ken behind the drums.

“We do faithful live renditions of oursongs, deep album cuts and fan favorites.Sometimespeoplerequestsongs.Wehaveno planned set list; I only know what westart off with. That way we keep it freshand alive. It drives engineers crazy.”

“We approach every concert as if it’sthe lastconcertwedo together.Wehave tobe twiceasgoodandwehave to rockhard-er than we ever did.”

When Jen Kirkman auditioned as awriter for Chelsea Handler, she walkedaway thinking there was no way she gotthe gig.

“I thought I blew the interview,” shesaid in a phone interview last week.

“Chelsea asked if I am a lesbian and Isaid ‘No, but if you need one I’ll try mybest.’ She stared at me. I had sneakers onso maybe she thought I was a lesbian,”said Kirkman, who appears on a doublebill with Josh Wolf at Borgata June 22.

To her surprise, Kirkman landed thejob and not only writes for Handler, butappears on both of her shows, “ChelseaLately” and its spin-off, “After Lately.”

Kirkman, who grew up in Massachu-setts, always had an interest in comedy. “Iwanted to be a rock star but that did notpanout. But Ididn’t thinkIwas that funny.More like a crabby dramatic person.”

But when Kirkman was older and liv-ing inBoston shewanted togive comedyatry.

So she attended open mic nights. Andon her first night, she scored laughs.

“My first timewas great. I felt like— Iam not crazy. I knew I could do this. I gotcocky.”

Then the laughs stopped. “Almost ev-eryone does well the first time on stage. Then they start bombing. Failure was

very validating,” she said.Nowadays, Kirkman handles the ups

and downs.Even on a half hour set, some jokes do

not land. “That does not bother me any-more. If I bomb, I had a bad day at work. Iknow what I did wrong,” she said.

Comics such as Sam Kinison, GeorgeCarlin, Bill Cosby and Joan Rivers pro-vide the inspiration, but not the influence.

“No one influences my style. I need towork as hard as that person. ,” said Kirk-man, who is now a regular on the Los An-geles comedy circuit where she can beseenregularlyat theUprightCitizensBri-gade Theatre, Largo and the HollywoodImprov.

Kirkman’s story-telling humor re-flects her personal life. “I could spend 10minutes on the same topic, telling tons ofjokes.”

She also believes in integrating the au-dience. “They can have interesting situa-tions. Like thecouple in the front rowcud-dling and holding hands. Turns out theywere divorced and just started datingagain. People can say something funny orweird like that,” she said.

Jen Kirkman who will perform at the Borgata, landed a job not only writing for ChelseaHandler, but appearing on both of her shows, ‘Chelsea Lately’ and its spin-off, ‘AfterLately.’ DANMAURIO
