In the band, he’s the frontman of a rock group. Solo, he’s country. It’s solo time again and unlike his last such tour, he comes to Harrah’s Philadel- phia Saturday night with a band behind him, not just lugging his acoustic guitar. “Now that I have a record out and a sec- ond about to be delivered, it’s time to start playing the way they sound on the record,” he said in a phone interview. “I always felt odd having a record out and never playing the way they sounded.” The acoustic route came long before Lewis recorded any of these songs. He added other instruments little by little, in- cluding a Dobro, a pedal steel guitar, de- signed to enhance the country flavor. The upcoming album leans more to tra- ditional country than the previous one, Lewis said. Think George Jones country. “My inspiration is not new country. It’s Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, stuff my grandfather listened to. That is the country soaked into my whole being. It’s intertwined into all my childhood memo- ries,” he said. In addition to original music, fans can look for two country covers over a 90-min- ute show. In 2011, Lewis released “Town Line,” a country EP. Lewis will release his first full solo album, “The Road,” in September. Its debut single, “Endless Summer,” has made the country charts. When you front a popular rock group, it’s difficult to change directions as a solo artist, especially in another genre, Lewis said. But he’s adamant about this element of his career. “I leave so many songs on the table that people really want to hear,” he said. “I’m choosing not to play them in fa- vor of the new country stuff. I’m commit- ted to country. It’s tough if you don’t want to hear the new material.” In a 15-year career, Lewis has enjoyed Top 10 and No. 1 hits. “I can play an entire set of big radio songs and get a huge response, but it’s not serving the purpose of what it is I do now,” he said. “I want to break into and be em- braced by the country genre.” The response has been great so far. “We play huge country festivals out- side, and it’s crazy when I play them,” he said. “It’s a natural crossover without me even knowing it.” He hopes the country music establish- ment accepts him as one of its own. “I want to get the industry to dismiss thoughts to whether I’m committed to country or just dipping my toes in the water to see how cold it is. I try not to care, but I do. I want to get recognized,” he said. To those fans who don’t want Aaron Lewis, country star, fear not. “I will be back with an acoustic and with Staind. IF YOU GOFastball will perform Aug. 3 at Sammy’sBeach Bar at Bally’s Atlantic City, ParkPlace and the beach. Show time is 10 p.m.Admission is free. The band also performsat the Party Pit at the House of Blues inShowboat, 801 Boardwalk. Show time is 11p.m. Admission is free

If theycould,Fastballwouldchange itsname to something else, somethingwith alittle more spark to it.

“We couldn’t get together for a goodname. We picked a name from a list,” saidTony Scalzo, a founding member of theAustin, Texas,-based trio.

Still, the name got them a gig at thefirst ESPY awards, playing to a packedhouse of celebrities at the sports eventyears ago. On Aug. 3 and 4, the band, which had two hits in “TheWay” and “OutofMyHead” in the late1990s,will play toasmaller crowdwith a pair of free gigs, thefirst at Sammy’s BeachBar, the second atthe House of Blues Party Pit.

The band hasn’t decided what it willplay where, said Scalzo, the lone non-Tex-an in the group.

Fastball will deliver the hits and othertunes that will sound familiar to concert-goers.

Look for at least a third of the sets de-voted to “Little White Lies,” Fastball’smost recent record (2009). Look for somecovers, aswell. The band likes to performDylan songs, especially those that aren’tas well known.

“We’ll mix it up stylistically, but stillwithin therealmofpoprock.Wehavea lotof fun. We’reenjoyable towatchandlistento. We don’t take ourselves so seriously.”

Scalzo, who grew up in Tustin, Calif.,hasperformed inbands sinceage14, play-ing keg parties and high schools in theearly days.

His interest in music stemmed fromhis mother and grandmother, who playedinstruments.Anunclewent to high schoolwith guitar legend Duane Eddy.

“Mom got me into it early. I played pi-anowhen Iwas 6. I learnedmusic theory.”

His rock tastes ran from Yes to FrankZappa to punk.

Fastball was formed in 1994 by Scalzo,Joey Shuffield andMiles Zuniga.

They released their first full-length al-bum, “Make Your Mama Proud,” in 1996.A secondalbum, “AllThePainMoneyCanBuy,” released in 1998, included thecatchy, “The Way.”

Songs such as “Sooner or Later”, “FireEscape” and “Out Of MyHead” followed, and the band toured the world.

The hits stopped coming after that.“We had a meteoric success and

burned out in three years. We worked toohard and listened to toomany people whowerespreadingus thin,”Scalzo saidabout

those years.Ego among the two songwriters didn’t

help. What keeps them going without astring of hits is that they play in otherbands in between Fastball gigs.

“Miles and I after 2004 went on a na-tional tour as an acoustic duo, including(playing) the North Star in Philadelphia.”

Gigs at casinos offer a better paydaythan a string of club dates on the road, hesaid.

“It’s too expensive to tour in support ofan album. If there are no guarantees, it’snot worthwhile,” he said.

And the three guys get along betterthese days.

“We work together a lot better now. We’re planning an EP with three songs.”

After all, Donny and Marie Osmondhavehad theirownTVvarietyshow.Theyhave a long-running show in Las Vegas. And now the act comes to Atlantic City as“Caesars presents the Donny and MarieShow’’ Tuesday through Aug. 5. After theNew Year, they will tour Europe.

While Donny andMarie have soloed inAtlantic City, they haven’t done AtlanticCity as an act.

Those who saw Donny & Marie in LasVegas can expect something different inAtlantic City, Marie said in a phone inter-view.

“Of course, there are elements of that.People want to see the standard acts. Ev-eryone comes from the last place they re-member you. Theymay love newer songslike ‘Meet Me in Montana’ or ‘Soldier ofLove.’ ”

Or songs they did on their TV show inthe late 1970s. Look for Donny to reachback to his early days with the OsmondBrotherswith songs suchas “OneBadAp-

ple.”Donny and Marie still do the little bit

country and little bit rock ‘n’ roll thing. And audiences can expect a lot of laughs, she said.

“We’re unique. Not many acts can saythey worked for five decades. I hope peo-ple leave and have awonderful time,” she

said.As for the sibling act’s re-

surgence, Marie said, “We al-ways knew we’d do some-thing together again. We hadno idea itwould be somethingso lovely. Donny has the topbilling. But I get the lastword.”

Indeed, Marie has a lifebeyond her brother.

She will be launching anew talk show on the Hall-mark Channel. “I’m takingMartha Stewart’s time slot.”

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS LIVE LINEUP

Guy Allison – Keyboards/vocals; John Cowan – Bass/vocals;Tom Johnston – Vocals/guitar; John McFee – Guitar/Strings/vocals; Tony Pia – Drums; Marc Russo – Saxophones; PatSimmons – Vocals/guitar; Ed Toth – Drums

A double bill pairing Chicago with theDoobie Brothers makes good sense. Andthe two iconic rock bands perform togeth-er Aug. 4 at the Borgata.

“We’ve been friends for 40 years. Wecomefromasimilar era, sowearecomple-mentary to eachother,” saidDoobie found-ing member Patrick Simmons.

TheDoobieBrothers go on first, and af-ter the Chicago set, the bands share thestage, playing each other’s songs, Sim-mons said.

Most people coming to the show knowwhat to expect from the Doobie Brothers— singles like “China Grove,” “Listen tothe Music,” “Black Water’’ and “LongTrain Runnin.' ’’

“We play rock prettyhard and do some acous-tical things,” Simmonssaid. “Most of the songspeople are familiar with.We play stuff from thedifferent eras. We’ll doan oddball tune peopledo not expect to hear, al-bum tracks people maynot be as familiar with.”

Thebandalsowill playacoupleof tunesfrom its 2010 album, “World Gone Crazy.”

The 2012 incarnation of the band hashad to adapt, particularlywhen it comes tosongs once sung in the distinctive voice offormermemberMichaelMcDonald, nowasolo artist. “We do one ofMike’s tunes, paytribute to him as a member,” Simmonssaid.

“Taking ItTo theStreets” is a likelycan-didate, more so than “What a Fool Be-lieves,”asongverymuch idenfiedwith theformer frontman.

Simmons can’t believe the DoobieBrothers have lasted all this time. “We’repretty fortunate. I never would haveguessed that after 40-plus years, we’d stillbe doing gigs. It’s a little surreal.”

Simmons learned piano and then guitaras a child growing up near San Jose, Calif.

“I played all through grade and highschool.At15, I startedgettingpaidandget-ting gigs. I still get paid for something Ilove doing. It’s a dream come true.

“As long as we can play and do it well,we’ll continue to do it. The band is tighterthan ever. And we’re singing well.”

New Jersey’s official tall ship, the A.J.Meerwald, has docked at Historic Gard-ner’s Basin to the delight of weekend andwannabe sailors, and visitors can set sailon various excursions through July 29.(For a complete schedule, visitwww.ajmeerwald.org.)

The ship, built as an oyster vessel in1928, heads out the inlet into the ocean andthe route depends onwhichway the windsare blowing as it reaches speeds of 6 mph.

“People like to get out on the water. There’s a romantic image of historic tallships,” saidJanisTraas, outreachprogram

coordinator of the Bayshore DiscoveryProject.

TheMeerwald has sailed each summersince it was restored in 1996. The Meer-wald travels to ports all over the state tooffer anyone the opportunity to sail. Atlan-tic City offers exposure to a wide crowd,Traas said.

Each sail comeswith a history lesson ofthe boat, including its time as a fire boatduringWorldWar II and its days as a clam-mer. The vessel carries a lot of local histo-ry relating to the oyster industry.

The A.J. Meerwald is a Delaware BayOyster Schooner, one of hundreds con-structed in an erawhen oyster fishingwas

one of the backbones of the region's econo-myand culture. The vessel, commissionedby the Meerwald family of South Dennis, consists of oak planks laid on oak frames.Just as in the original specs, theMeerwaldcomes with a small engine for emergen-cies or to leave the dock and return.

“This is the only one still sailing of thatgroup,” Traas said.

It was on the brink of being scrappedwhenMeghanWren, founderof theBaysh-ore Discovery Project, got control of theboat in 1987. She and others in the preser-vation group based in Bivalve, Cumber-land County, restored the Meerwald to itsoriginal condition as a sailing vessel.

Micah Harris sees stardom in his fu-ture.TheGallowayTownshipdisc jockeyknown as DJ Micah begins a weekly gigas one of a stable of DJs on Jamie Foxx’sSirius XM network, Foxxhole Radio inAugust. He gets a 3 p.m. slot on Wednes-day.

“Last yearwhen Jamie came toAtlan-tic City, I did one of his events. His pro-gramdirector called twoweeks later. Hesaid ‘I like what you do. Make a mix.’ Imade the mix. Then it was one of those‘we’ll call you.’ Ten days later, I calledthem.”

The Foxx team emailed Micah andasked him to be part of the crew. Heheard his first mix on the air.

When Foxx brought his programbackto Atlantic City this year, Micah workedlive events on Thursday and Friday. Hesays there’s a huge difference — andsome similarities — between the live ap-pearances in Atlantic City and else-where, and being on the air in the studio.

“You deal with people listening athome, in the car at work or on the com-puter. At a nightclub, you see people andtheir reactions. It’s personal on bothends,” Micah said

DJMicah— actually short for micah-phonechecka— began his career as a DJon the radio, taking over for his olderbrotheron thehighschool radiostation inDelaware.

In his time slot on the air, he playedR&B, hip-hop and reggae. After highschool, he attended the Broadcast Insti-tute of Maryland, where he interned at a

big band station. From radio gigs, he gravitated toward

spinningrecordsatnightclubs,andatwed-dings and other events. He expanded toPennsylvania and South Jersey.

“Now I mix everything from rock ‘n’roll to house to old school to funk. It’s allconnected in one big musical puzzle. I puttogether what goes where. I play hip-hopone minute and the next minute a rocksong,” Micah said.

Onarecentweek,MicahworkedatNar-di’s on LongBeach Island, Sammy’s BeachBar at Bally’s, the Royal Jelly BurlesqueClub inRevelandabrewpubinManayunk.“I’ve been fromNew York to D.C. I’m stilltrying to make it to Florida.”

At Nardi’s, he featured mostly ’70s and’80s music. The beach bar focused on Car-ibbean with a lot of Latin and reggae mu-sic. Royal Jelly was high energy.

“You’re walking into a party atmos-phere,” he said. “The brewpub is also highenergy, but slightly different. In Manay-unk, it’s more college kids looking for aplace to party. It’s more hip. Revel is moreopen and more diverse. You have to be ontop of playing everything to get thecrowd’s attention.”

Micah puts in long days. At Sammy’s hestarted at 7 p.m., alternating with a livebanduntilmidnight, whenhe took over un-til 3 a.m. “The crowd wanted to stay.”

Micah considers himself old schoolwhen it comes to technology.Hehascratesofvinyl records. “Iuse turntables, butwithlaptop programs compatible with it. De-pending on the event, I sometimes bringmy own setup. Other times, I just plug inmy laptop,” he said.
