Welcome to another addition of our newsletter. I hope you enjoy the new format. This is going to be a very exciting month, I am completely enthralled with the yachting as we are in the beginning stages of the 35th America's Cup with the formulae one of boats, the 15 metre ACC Class. Official racing began on the 26th May with the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers and the top Challenger will meet defending Champions Oracle Team USA beginning June, 2017. Can Emirates Team New Zealand with their revolutionary design take us for another exciting journey to America's Cup glory? . We have a big show on this Saturday night 3rd June. The Texas Rock night will feature hard drivin’ country rocker James Ray from the United States of America and his Southern and Texas rock band – Geronimo. James Ray is a Trans-Tasman Entertainer of the Year and the New Zealand Country Music Award Entertainer of the Year Songwriter multi-award winner. He holds the prestigious Academy of Country Music Awards for Best Original Song, Best Male Vocalist and the supreme award of Best Overall Performer. He is also the recipient of five top NZ Sun City Music Awards. Party-goers are encouraged to dress up in their best western-style attire and party the night away. Don't miss out - get your tickets now from the office to avoid disappointment.
The British & Irish Lion's have arrived on our shores with the sole objective to teach us a lesson or two about the strength of Northern Hemisphere Rugby. They have the most demanding schedule ever with mouth watering clashed versus all of our Super Rugby sides, the Maori All Blacks and the NZ Provincial Barbarians. Whether this schedule is a masterstroke move by Warren Gatlan or a recipe for disaster is up for debate.....only time will tell. All Saturday night games will be shown on the big screen at the clubrooms with plenty of fun and games, happy hours and raffles. Come and support our boys in black all the way!
(Sat 3rd June - the game will not be shown live at the club due to the James Ray Texas Rock Show Night)
I am not a dancer, in fact, my wife would freely suggest the last thing anyone would want to see are my dance moves, however, it is my understanding that there is an etiquette when using a dance floor, and from time to time this can cause frustration for participants. As I understand it - dancers that stay in the same place (that would be me) are best to be in and around the center of the floor and the dancers that wish to maximise the space can use the outside. I wish to reiterate that our entertainment nights are a social time and the dance floor is for everyone to enjoy at all levels and genres of dancing. Please be respectful of other dancers and appreciate that not everyone is professionally tutored. Just enjoy yourselves! As from 01 June, the Friday & Saturday buffet price will be $26.50 for members and $29.50 for non-members. The Sunday carvery will be $20.70 for members and $23.00 for non-members. Thank you for your slogan submissions. We received 25 slogan options and the Executive Committee are currently in the process of short listing and hopefully selecting the best fit. Watch this space! Are you a friend! From time to time as part of our responsibility of duty of care, the bar team will refuse service if they believe someone has consumed too much alcohol. Please respect the decision made by the on-duty staff and do not be coerced into supplying further alcohol to the person in question. Thank you and stay safe.
Finally, I have come across an article (letter to the editor, BOP Times) written by Todd Muller, MP for the Bay of Plenty and a member of the club. I was very taken by the sentiment of this article and thought it worthy to repeat in our Newsletter. Please read below and have a great month with all the action ahead, cheers Andrew
RSA's encapsulate the best of service I was asked by the Mount RSA to attend the opening of Munro's, a family-oriented cafe named after the extraordinary Les Munro, our local dam buster pilot during World War II. It was a special occasion that gave me pause to reflect on the value RSA members give their community. As a nation, and as a community, we focus on their service to our country in foreign fields in both hot and cold theaters of war. Their sacrifice was selfless and it's right that we honour them as we do with our solemnity on ANZAC morning. . However, I think we should also honour the service they rendered upon their return. My local Mount RSA was built in 1943 from the returned servicemen's labour along with those who stayed behind. The war generation was the personification of helping a
neighbour in need, quietly, understatedly, and their culture of service thankfully pervades our community still. As I looked out of the crowd listening at the RSA, I was struck by the years of service and the multitudes of "little differences" their collective acts of kindness and volunteerism have made to our community. Indeed Les Munro's life upon returning to NZ was filled with service including many years as a local mayor in Te Kuiti. . When we salute our returned servicemen and women we should salute their culture of ongoing, all of life service that they still exemplify today. Can I commend you to visit the Mount RSA - or its equally impressive Tauranga branch. It is a welcoming place with extraordinary history covering its walls, from flags, to the names of the fallen, to portraits of the great and good of both those we lost and those who have lived a full life. But as with all poignant memories, they live only in the recollection of the living. For no matter how I impressive a portrait, how striking a regiment flag, they remain silent artifacts lost in history if they are not ob-served, recollected and remembered by us all. That's why for me, our RSA's are so special. Increasingly family-orientated, getting the mix right of remembrance and relevance that is the true test of any RSA club. Above all, it's the people. Club people, service people who continue to breathe life into our history and our today. Lest we forget; lest we strive to emulate. Todd Muller (MP for BoP)

Mt RSA COUNTRY MUSIC CLUB An absolute bumper crowd turned up last Sunday
afternoon for our Monthly concert. There was a
special moment in the show when one of the audi-
ence, Dennis August, an icon of NZ Country music
was invited to join them on stage. Dennis wowed the
crowd with backing vocals from Chris and Russell.
All through the afternoon the band of Lyndsay, Ron,
Hans and Gary were just superb. To close the after-
noon Chris and Russell paid tribute to the late Sir
Howard Morrison, by singing “How great thou art“. it
was a wonderful end to an amazing afternoon. So
don’t forget our next concert 1pm Sunday 25th June
where we have an up and coming Country Music
star in 10 year old Jade O'Brien from Rotorua .
