Ports Open 2009 Campaign

with Celebration!Where were you on the night of

September 14, 2008? Can you remember?

Were you among the Ports fans tied to the radio, listening to Zack Bayrouty call the final game of the California League championship series? Or were you at Clear Channel Sta-dium in Lancaster, Calif. watching the Ports capture their 11th California League crown? Wherever you were last September, you can definitely celebrate that 2008 title with the Ports on April 16 at their 2009 home opener against the San Jose Giants. In addi-tion to celebrating the opening of a new sea-son at Banner Island Ballpark, the Stockton Ports will be celebrating the accomplishments and achievements of the 2008 club, with an unveiling of the championship pennant, a championship ring presentation and a fire-works show.

The Ports are proud of all the great things that happened in 2008 in addition to the championship title—such as Chris Carter’s home run record, Archie Gilbert’s postsea-son MVP award, the single game attendance record set on July 3, and the success of the Anchor Fund, which donated approximately $16,000 and nearly $43,500 of in-kind dona-tions, including 8,600 tickets to local non-profit organizations, charities and schools..

The Ports also were one of two Oakland A’s affiliates (the other being the Triple A Sacramento River Cats) to capture a league championship in 2008—a fact the Ports will also commemorate on April 16.

Just as September 14, 2008 will be a memorable date for many Ports fans, April 16, 2009 will also be a night to remember for years to come. What better way to celebrate the opening of the fifth season of competitive professional baseball at Banner Island Ball-park than with a championship celebration?

But the party won’t just end with the April 16 post-game fireworks. The Ports will be hosting another exciting celebration on April 18 with their 2nd Annual Alumni Night. The Ports will be welcoming several Ports Alumni on April 18, and will honor their contributions to the history and legacy of the Ports in a pre-game ceremony.

The Ports will be giving away photos of Don “Hercules” Belton, the only pitcher in Ports history to lead the league in wins in back-to-back years, totaling more than 20 wins in 1946 and 1947. His dominance on the mound helped lead the Ports to back-to-back California League Championship titles in 1946 and 1947.

The Ports are proud to have been a part of our Alumni’s professional baseball career and are thrilled to welcome them to the 2nd An-nual Alumni Night. Their achievements have helped make the Stockton Ports a legendary team in California League and Minor League Baseball history.

In addition to all of the wonderful things going on Opening Weekend, the Ports will end the first homestand of the season in high style. On Wednesday, April 22, the Ports will be hosting their first of two Education Days. The Ports are excited to welcome area students to Banner Island Ballpark and to be their classroom for the day. On Education Days, students can participate in educational programs and enjoy a baseball game. Educa-tion Days features a soft drink, a hot dog, and a ticket for students, all for only $5!

The Ports will also be introducing a new promotion on April 22—Taking Care of Busi-ness Day. The Ports encourage area business men and women to spend their lunch hour at the ballpark! As a special deal, fans can purchase a ticket and lunch, and spend their lunch hour at an 11:05 morning game watch-ing top A’s prospects compete and defend their championship title.

The Ports will be starting off the season with a party, and hope to wrap up the 2009 campaign in the same way. So, if you en-joyed last September, be sure to stick around and see what happens this fall.

Q&A WithManager Aaron NieckulaInterviewed by Kristin Pratt

KP: What are you most looking forward to this season? AN: I am looking forward to a new challenge, managing in different ballparks, and most impor-tantly working with my coaching staff in getting our players ready to compete and have success at the big league level.

KP: You’ve worked with both Don Schulze and Tim Garland in the past, with Kane County. How will that past experience with them help as you go manage a new team? AN: Both Timmy and Don are excellent coaches, they are both very good teachers of the game. Having worked with them before certainly will help in my transition to managing in a new League. And with Timmy having coached 2 years in the Cal league, his knowledge and experience will certainly help me in locating great places to eat!

KP: How will your experience in the California League and Oakland organization as a player will help you here as you work to instruct players? AN: First let me say that playing in and working for Oakland has been a wonderful experience. It is an outstanding organization both in player development and coaching development. There is a plan here. There is an organizational philosophy that we as coaches are expected to follow and up-hold. Every coach I have talked to enjoys coaching here. Just about every player that has played for Oakland says the same thing; that we care for the player and his development both on AND off the field. And having played in this league a few years back, I do possess some familiarity with ballparks, travel, weather, etc.

KP: How does your background as a catcher shape your perspective as a manager? AN: Being an ex-catcher has certainly helped me in handling my teams. As a catcher, I was involved in every aspect of the game from base running, to hitting, to defense, to handling a pitching staff as well as communicating with the coaching staff on a regular basis. this experience has helped me communicate with both the players and my coaching staff.

KP: What do you admire most about the Oak-land organization? AN: I love the fact that there is so much on empha-sis on coaching development as well as player de-velopment. The Oakland organization has a strong player development history that I feel begins with one, the players we draft and two, the excellent coaches, managers, and athletic trainers we have in this system.

KP: What time of the season do you get most excited for—Opening Day/Night, All-Star Game/Break, Draft Day or the postseason? AN: Opening Night for me is probably the most ex-citing, then the first game of the playoffs. Opening night is like new beginnings, a fresh start to a new season. Playoffs are the reward of all the hard work and due diligence of all the players and coaching staff, so of course, that is an exciting time too.

KP: Who has been a mentor for you? Have any of your coaches from your playing days been a role model for you as you became a coach and manager? AN: My first manager, Greg Sparks, has been a mentor for me. I have a lot of respect for him as an instructor as well as a person. Tony Larussa is certainly someone I look up to. I enjoy watching him manage and feel he may be one of the best in the game.

KP: What accomplishment, either as a player or a coach, are you most proud of? AN: If I had to pick just one personal accomplish-ment that I am most proud of it would be the day I signed my professional contract in June of 1998. It was a proud moment for both my mom and I. She is the one who busted her tail to send me to many different baseball camps throughout my youth, worked two jobs to send me to a private high school where the opportunities to succeed were more prevalent, and supported me throughout my playing days at the University of Illinois.

KP: What lesson, philosophy or values do you want your players to learn from you once the season’s over?AN: Players are the ones who are in control of their own destiny. We as coaches implement a sound and structured environment for them to improve their skills as individuals and as a team. But at the end of the day, when they look into that mirror, they have to be honest and say whether or not they worked hard enough and smart enough to make themselves better. But, I also want these players to become better men off the field as well. Respect the game, Respect the World!
