TEAM NOTES PREPARED BY REGAN BARTEL OF AM 1150

• Tonight’s Preview: The Rockets host the Spokane Chiefs in a weekend home and home series. The two teams meet tomorrow in Spokane. This is the third meeting of the season between the two teams. On opening night the Rockets were a 4-3 overtime winner. Dillon Hamaliuk scored the game-winning goal. Back on November 9th, the Chiefs were a 6-1 winner. The Chiefs fired 55 shots on goal. Mark Liwiski opened the scoring before the Chiefs scored 6 straight. Tonight’s game marks the return of ex-Rocket Leif Mattson to Prospera Place. The 20-year-old was dealt to the Chiefs December 5th for a 2020 3rd round WHL bantam pick. Mattson played 203 games with the Rockets after being acquired from the Brandon Wheat Kings on October 6, 2016, for a 9th round pick. Mattson was the Rockets Humanitarian award winner last season.

• Broadcasters Notebook: Pavel Novak is trying to do something one other European born player has accomplished with the organization. Novak leads the team in points. Vaclav Varada tied for the team lead in points (88) with Tacoma in 1994-95…After returning for one game after playing for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship, Nolan Foote has missed 7 straight games with an injury. The Rockets are 8 and 12 in 20 games without him this season. Foote did not play against the Chiefs in the season opener as he was still with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning….The Rockets are playing their 48th game of the season tonight, meaning only 20 games remain…The team has 13 home games left and only 7 on the road…..The Rockets are 8-4-0-0 against teams in the US Division….The Rockets are now 19-5-0-0 when scoring the games first goal…The Rockets have played in 24-1 goal games this season, the most in the WHL…The Rockets are 10-14-1-1 against teams in the BC Division…The Rockets are 6 and 1 in overtime with game-winning goals coming from Matthew Wedman, Dillon Hamaliuk, Nolan Foote, Kaedan Korczak (twice) and Liam Kindree….Head Coach Adam Foote coached in his 100th game last Sunday against the Vancouver Giants.

• Milestone Makers: Rockets 20-year-old Matthew Wedman is playing in his 298th game tonight. Nolan Foote is 5 games shy of 200 for his career. Defenceman Kaedan Korczak is one point shy of a career-high in points. The 18-year-old has 33 points heading into tonight’s game…Jake Lee is one point shy of the career-high 24 points he put up last season in Seattle…Goaltender Roman Basran is three appearances shy of 100 for his career.

CHIEFS BY THE NUMBERS Record: 25-17-4-1 (55 points) • 14-9-2-0 (home) • 11-8-2-1 (away) • PP: 33/162 (20.4%) • PK: 35/157 (77.7%) • GF-GA: 173-142

Ranking: 3rd U.S. Division, 4th Western Conference • Last 10: 5-5-0-0 • Streak: 0-2-0-0 (L-2)

AGAINST THE ROCKETS SEASON SERIES… Tonight is the 3rd of 4 head-to-head matchups between the two clubs this season and 2nd of 2 in Kelowna.

Nov. 9: The Chiefs turned in one of their best performances of the season, outshooting the Rockets 55-23 en route to a comfortable 6-1 win in Spokane. Six different skaters scored for the Chiefs despite the team going 0-for-7 on the PP. Ty Smith had 3A & was +4 while Jack Finley posted 1G & 2A and was +3.

Sept. 21: The Chiefs forced overtime in the second game of the regular season but Kelowna scored with one second left in the extra frame to claim the victory. Jake McGrew, Michael King and Filip Kral scored for Spokane. Dillon Hamaliuk led the way for the Rockets with 2G & 2A including the game-winner in OT.

FAMILIAR FACES… Tonight marks the first opportunity for former Rockets Leif Mattson and James Porter Jr. to play against their old team. Mattson played 203 games (61G-94A) with Kelowna starting in 2016 before being acquired by the Chiefs earlier this season. Porter appeared in 73 games with the Rockets over two seasons before being traded to Moose Jaw during the offseason, then acquired by Spokane in January.

LAST GAME

Jan. 29: Spokane (2) at Kamloops (4)

The Chiefs played the B.C. Division-leading Blazers close, pressuring down one goal in the third period but were unable to break through before a late empty-netter sealed it. Luke Toporowski continued his hot streak, scoring in his 3rd straight game. Filip Kral scored on a 5-on-3 for the Chiefs’ other goal. Two of the Blazers’ 4 goals game with the man advantage. Lukas Parik started in goal and made 36 saves in the loss. Spokane was very good in the faceoff circle, winning 45 of 71 (63.4%).

NEWS & NOTES

POWER OUTAGE… The Chiefs’ power play has experienced a slump lately, going 6-for-38 over their last 12 games dating back to New Year’s Eve at Tri-City (despite going 3-for-3 at T.C. on 1/25). Spokane has been held without a power play opportunity four times this season.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY… Adam Beckman (18-game; 12/7-1/25) and Eli Zummack (17-game; 11/29-1/11) have each posted point streaks of 17+ games this season, marking the longest streaks by a Chief since Mitch Holmberg’s 17-gamer (18G-24A) in Sept.-Nov. 2013. Tyler Johnson also had a 17-game streak in 2010-11 (15G-18A). The franchise record is 27 games, by Ray Whitney during the 90-91 season.

MIDTERM RANKINGS… The Chiefs had two players NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings. F Jack Finley came in at 46th among North American skaters while F Bear Hughes was 80th. Finley was previously rated a “B” prospect while Hughes was a “C” despite starting the season unrated. Should either be selected, it would mark the 6th-straight year in which a Chief has been picked in the draft.

TOPPING OFF… LW Luke Toporowski has found a new gear lately, posting 3G & 6A during his current 5-game point streak and 18 points (8G & 10A) since returning from the mid-season holiday break (14 games). He has posted 8 multi-point games this season with 6 coming since Dec. 28, including a career-best 4 points at T.C. on Jan. 25.

HE’S ON FIRE… Adam Beckman recently snapped a WHL-best 18-game point streak (21G-12A) running from Dec. 7 to Jan. 25. He was named WHL Player of the Month for Dec. after posting 15G & 5A (+8) in 11 games, helping the team to a 7-2-1-1 record. His prolific month started a franchise-record 10-game goal streak, one-upping a 9-game mark that had been reached 5 times, most recently by Jaret Anderson-Dolan in 2018-19. Beckman earned WHL Player of the Week honors on Dec. 16 after posting 6G & 3A (+2) in 3 games for the Chiefs as the team went 2-0-0-1. He is the 2nd Chief to earn Player of the Week honors this season, joining Ty Smith (9/30-10/6) and first to secure Player of the Month since Mitch Holmberg (Sept./Oct. 2013).

TOP PROSPECT… Forward Jack Finley participated in the 2020 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game on Jan. 16 in Hamilton, Ontario. He was one of 13 WHL players selected. Notable previous Chiefs to participate include Ty Smith (2018; 1st round NJD) and Kailer Yamamoto (2017; 1st round EDM).

BRAD TO MEET YOU… Spokane picked up LW Brad Ginnell (00) from Winnipeg on Jan. 8 in exchange for two bantam draft picks (2020 4th, 2021 6th). Ginnell is a 214-game veteran of the league, playing with Portland and Winnipeg/Kootenay. He scored a career-best 16 goals and 25 assists for 41 points last year with Kootenay. His father Erin played in the WHL from 1985-87 and is a long-time NHL scout, currently with the Vegas Golden Knights. Grandfather Pat played in the league from 1957-61 before a long coaching career that earned 518 WHL wins (8th all-time) in 963 games (10th). Pat moved on to a 14-year tenure as a scout with the St. Louis Blues that ended in 2003.

DEADLINE DEAL… The Chiefs traded RW Connor Gabruch (01) to Calgary on Jan. 9 for a 2020 5th round bantam pick. The Saskatoon native scored 3G & 4A for 7 points in 36 games with Spokane this season.

WORLD CHAMP… Team captain Ty Smith secured a gold medal with Canada at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, wearing an “A” as an alternate captain. Smith returned to the squad after representing Canada last year as well. He finished with 3A in the tournament as the Canadians defeated the Russians 4-3 to secure their 18th championship.

INJURY WOES… The Chiefs placed G Campbell Arnold (knee) & D Matt Leduc (shoulder) on the long-term injured list on 1/6, marking the 2nd and 3rd players lost for the season after F Jake McGrew (SJS 6th 2017) suffered a knee injury in October.

CZECHING IN… G Lukas Parik represented his country at the World Junior Championship in his home Czech Republic. The Czechs lost to Sweden in the QF round. Parik started versus USA & CAN in pool play, making 39 saves in a strong performance against the Americans before exiting the game against Canada early with an apparent injury.

FOUR IS THE NUMBER… The Chiefs are 21-3-1-0 when scoring 4+ goals this season and 4-14-3-1 when scoring 3 or fewer.

QUICK STARTS… The Chiefs are 19-2-1-0 when scoring first this season and 14-0-2-1 when leading after the 1st period. They are 19-2-2-0 when leading after two frames.

MIDDLE FRAME MAGIC… The Chiefs have outscored opponents 66-42 (+24) during the second period this season.

BEAR IN MIND... Rookie forward Bear Hughes ranks 5th in overall WHL rookie points (36) & 8th in goals (14). He was named WHL Rookie of the Month for November after posting 12 points (5G-7A) and a +12 rating in 12 games as the Chiefs went 7-3-2-0. Hughes recorded at least a point in 8 games, with 4 multi-point efforts. The last Chief to win rookie of the month was Adam Beckman (April 2019). The Post Falls, ID native scored 2G as a late-season AP call-up last year after spending the majority of the season with the Spokane Braves (KIJHL), with whom he earned league Rookie of the Year and division MVP honors. Hughes was originally put on Spokane’s radar by former Chief and current Tampa Bay Lightning forward Tyler Johnson, who noticed him at Frontier Ice Arena in Post Falls during offseason skates. Prior to being listed, Hughes played primarily house league hockey in the Spokane area.

A NEW LEIF… The Chiefs acquired forward Leif Mattson from the Kelowna Rockets on Dec. 5 in exchange for a 3rd-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft. The overage forward is coming off back-to-back 20-goal seasons, including a 22+41=63 line last year. Mattson earned the Rockets’ Most Sportsmanlike (17-18) and Humanitarian of the Year (18-19) awards during his 203-game career in Kelowna, posting 61G & 94A for 155PTS. He is a player ambassador for the Hockey Gives Blood non-profit society.

MAC-ING AN ENTRANCE… The Chiefs signed & added D Mac Gross on Dec. 26. Gross, a former 3rd-round bantam pick (2017) had been playing with the SJHL’s Kindersley Klippers (1G-9A in 37 GP) and was invited to participate in the CJHL Top Prospects Game as one of the top 40 NHL draft prospects from the CJHL.

TERRIFIC TRIO… The Chiefs have a player in the hunt for top 5 of all three of the WHL’s scoring leaderboards, including overall (Beckman, 3rd), defensemen (Kral, 6th) and rookie (Hughes, 5th). The last time the Chiefs had a representative in the top 5 of all three categories for a full season was 1999-00 (Tim Smith, t-5th overall… Scott Roles, 5th defense… Roman Tvrdon, 1st rookies).

CANADA-RUSSIA… Chiefs captain Ty Smith and forward Adam Beckman both competed for Team WHL at the 2019 CIBC Canada-Russia Series. It marked the second time Smith – who served as captain for Team WHL – participated in the event while Beckman made his debut. Smith recorded 2A in the series-clinching final game.

THE SWARD IS MIGHTIER… Rookie D Graham Sward was selected by Hockey Canada to compete in the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Sward was one of 66 players selected by Hockey Canada for the elite event; Canada fielded three teams to take on the U.S., Russia, Sweden & Finland. Sward and Canada White earned 4th place.

VIVEIROS AT THE HELM… Manny Viveiros heads the Chiefs’ coaching staff after serving as an Assistant Coach on the Edmonton Oilers staff for the 2018-19 season. He has a demonstrated track record of success in the WHL, serving as head coach and director of pplayer personnel in Swift Current for two seasons (2016-18), posting a combined 87-40-9-8 regular season record. The Broncos won 48 games for 103 points during the 2017-18 campaign before their thrilling championship run, defeating Everett to secure the Ed Chynoweth Cup. He was the 2017-18 WHL Coach of the Year.

MEET MAGLIO… Associate Coach Adam Maglio boasts 5+ years of coaching experience, mostly as an assistant (2015-17) & head coach (2017-19) w/ the P.G. Spruce Kings (BCHL). The Spruce Kings went 33-17-4-4 in 2017-18 to earn a Mainland Division title before a deep playoff run that ended with a loss in the league finals. They posted 39 wins and 84 points last year (39-13-0-6) before a dominant postseason run, going 16-1 on their way to the BCHL Championship. They won the annual Doyle Cup trophy (BCHL vs. AJHL) with a 4-2 series win over the Brooks Bandits before narrowly losing to the hosting Bandits in the finals of the NJAC.
