GAME TIME: 2 p.m. SERIES:  St. Mary’s leads 11­2­2 SERIES STARTED: 2000 LAST SEASON: Last year St. Mary’s swept the series in Winona. Both games were close and were determined by two or fewer goals. In the opener, the Cardinals scored a goal in the second half of the second period and then added an insurance goal in the first minute of the third period to claim a 2­0 lead. The teams were practically even in every offensive statistical category with the Cardinals holding a 31­30 edge in shots. Neither team was able to outshoot their opponent by more than a single shot in any period. The difference came from the play of the special teams. The Cobbers went 0­for­8 on the power and conceded a game­changing shorthanded goal at the start of the third period. The second game went into overtime with SMU winning 2­1. The cardinals scored first before CC forward Hannah Impola netted the team’s only goal of the series midway through the third period. St. Mary’s then received the game­winner at 2:43 from Melissa Mondo. The Cardinals outshot Concordia 29­17 for the game.

GAMEDAY GAME RECAP St. Mary’s 3 at Concordia 6 – Jan. 19, 2007 Concordia finally ended their two month long road trip in style by beating St. Mary's 6­3 in Moorhead on Friday. The game was the home opener for the Cobbers who played their first 12 games of the season on the road. 

The difference in the game was black and white. Concordia went 3­of­6 on the power play and scored on their two­man advantage while the Cardinals were held scoreless in their six power play attempts and did not find the net on a pair of 5­on­3 situations. 

Mandi Samuelson was the scoring hero for CC as she scored a pair of goals in the team's highest offensive output of the season. The six goals scored for Concordia is also the most tallied in a conference game since they downed St. Kate's by a similar 6­3 score on Dec. 4, 2004. 

The win also helps the Cobbers end a five­game losing streak on the season and a 12­game winless skid against the Cardinals. The victory moves CC to 3­5­1 in the league and 4­7­2 overall. St. Mary's loses for the seventh straight game and falls to 2­4­1 in MIAC play and 2­10­2 overall. 

The game turned in the pivotal second period. After the two teams traded goals in the opening period, with Erin Johnson scoring her second goal of the year for the Cobbers and SMU countering with a shorthanded goal from Melissa Mondo, Concordia broke the game wide open with three power play goals in the middle stanza. 

Hannah Impola started the second period power play scoring spree by tallying a power play goal at 9:55. That came while the Cobbers were on a 5­on­3 advantage. Kelsey Puffe then put CC up 3­1 on the ensuing 5­on­4 advantage at the 11:00 mark. Samuelson finished off the trifecta of power play goals when she slammed home the first of her two goals in the game at 17:04. 

Alyssa Dahl then came up with the critical fifth goal for CC to put the Cobbers up by four at 5­1. Dahl's shorthanded goal just 31 seconds into the final period was her third of the season. 

The Cardinals then cut the lead to two goals by scoring at 5:06 on a goal by Rachel Harrison, and then again at 18:01 on Rebecca Jelenc's first score of the season. 

SMU then took a timeout and promptly pulled its goalie to try and cut into the 5­3 lead. That tactic last for over a minute before Samuelson scored her second goal of the game to seal the victory. 

The Cobbers had a decided 36­21 edge in shots on goal. Both teams took eight penalties in the game for 16 penalty minutes. 

CC goalie Maddie Haroldson stopped 18 shots to earn her second win of the season. St. Mary's started the game with Nikki Jung, who played all the way until the first Cobber goal in the third period, and was relieved by Amanda Gage who finished the game. Jung made 20 saves in the game and was saddled with the loss. Gage turned aside 10 shots in a little over 18:00 of play.

COBBER LAST GAME RECAP Concordia 1 at St. Olaf 3 – Sunday, Jan. 14 Concordia allowed a single goal in each period and lost 3­1 to St. Olaf in Northfield on Sunday. The Cobbers scored their lone goal of the series with less than five minutes remaining in the third period. 

With the loss, Concordia falls to 2­5­1 in conference play and 3­7­2 overall. The sweep allows the Oles to move to 6­1­1 in league play and take over the lead in the conference standings. St. Olaf is now 7­4­1 overall. 

Paige Stone continued her hot scoring touch for the Cobbers. Stone netted the lone goal for CC and has now scored a goal in each of Concordia's last three games. She has scored three of the team's four goals since the Christmas break. 

Concordia put themselves in a hole in the first two minutes of the game. St. Olaf got on the board at the 1:29 of the opening period when Tessa Christensen scored the first of her two goals in the game on the power play. Christensen also posted an assist on the Oles third goal in the game. 

The Cobbers then held the Oles scoreless until the final minute of the second period. The goal at the 19:35 mark proved to be the game­winner and was a huge swing in momentum for St. Olaf. The two teams traded goals in the third period. The Oles pushed the margin to three goals midway through the final frame on Christensen's second goal of the game. Stone then put the Cobbers on the board at 16:02 when she scored on the power play with assists going to Kayla Thorson and Brandie Dunn. 

For the game, St. Olaf outshot the Cobbers 29­27 in an evenly played game. Both teams were also 1­for­4 on the power play. Both squads were also even in penalties and penalty minutes. Each team took four penalties for eight penalty minutes. 

Concordia goalie Maddie Haroldson made 26 saves and fell for the fourth time this year. Shannon Herrick stopped 26 shots to earn her third win of the year for the Oles. 

CARDINAL LAST GAME RECAP St. Mary’s 0 at UW­Eau Claire 2 – Friday, Jan. 12 (Courtesy of SMU SID) When the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team played host to UW­ Eau Claire in their second game of the year on Nov. 7, the Cardinals surrendered five goals — single goals in the first and second periods, and three in the third — in a 5­2 Blugold win. 

Friday evening, the Cardinals got another shot at the Blugolds, and for the second time in two meetings, SMU gave up single goals in the first and second periods — but this time, they held UW­Eau Claire scoreless in the third. 

Unfortunately, while SMU's defense did a much better job of stifling the Blugolds' offense this time around, UW­Eau Claire's defense was down­right airtight.  Kaela Jobman stopped all 12 shots she faced as the UW­Eau Claire freshman handed SMU its second shutout loss of the season, 2­0 at Hobbs Ice Arena. 

"I thought, overall, we played better against (UW­Eau Claire) tonight than we did the first time around," admitted SMU coach Terry Mannor, whose team saw its season­high losing streak climb to six straight. "But we're still stuck in that same pattern — we play very poorly in the first period, we play OK in the second and we play good in the third.” 

"Eau Claire is a very good team, and for us to only play one solid period against them is a little frustrating," continued Mannor. "One way or another, we've got to figure out a way to put a complete game together." 

Martina Korinek gave UWEC all the offense it would need, scoring a powerplay goal at 11:51 of the opening period. The Blugolds dominated early, outshooting SMU 14­1 in the opening 20 minutes. It was more of the same in the second period, as Eau Claire threw 10 more shots on SMU goalie Amanda Gage, and got a second power play goal, this time coming off the stick of Michelle Stohr less than two minutes into the period.
