GAME TIME: 2 p.m. SERIES:  St. Thomas leads 10­3­2 SERIES STARTED: 2000 LAST SEASON: Last year the two teams split the series in St. Paul. The Cobbers pulled off the big upset in the first game when Concordia goalie Jenna Johnson made 40 saves to earn a 1­0 shutout win over the sixth­ranked Tommies. For St. Thomas, it was their first MIAC shutout loss in four seasons. Hannah Impola had the game­winning goal for the Cobbers at 11:34 of period two as the Cobbers halted a six­game losing streak vs. UST. St. Thomas outshot Concordia 40­22. In the second game, the Tommies struck for six goals in the second period en route to an 8­1 revenge­filled victory over CC. UST took a 1­0 lead into the decisive middle period before erupting for the sextet of goals. They scored five of the six in the first seven minutes of play in the period. The shots on goal in the game were a lot more even than the final score gives credit. For the game, UST outshot CC by a narrow 36­34 margin. Only one of the Tommies’ eight goals was scored on the power play. UST went 1­for­5 on the man­advantage situations while the Cobbers were 0­for­5 in their power play chances.

LAST NIGHT’S GAME RECAP MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/09/07)­­ The thermometer outside read a crisp ­9 degrees, but the temperature inside the Moorhead Youth Hockey Rink on Friday was a balmy 95 degrees as Concordia heated up the cold February night by blanking perennial league power St. Thomas 4­0. 

The shutout win is the second straight for the Cobbers and is also the second time in the past three games against the Tommies they have recorded a shutout. More importantly, the victory keeps Concordia in the thick of the MIAC playoff hunt. CC is now 5­7­1 in league play and 6­9­2 overall. The Tommies fall for the fourth time in the past five games. It is also the third time in the past five games they have been shutout. They entered the game in second place in the MIAC and will hold steady as they fall to 9­4­0 in the conference and 11­9­0 overall. 

Four different Cobbers scored in the game, but in the end, it was the outstanding play of Cobber goalie Maddie Haroldson that proved to be the difference maker. Haroldson turned aside all 31 shots to post her second straight shutout. She was in goal for the Cobbers' 2­0 win over Bethel last Saturday. 

The game started in dramatic fashion for Concordia. They were able to get the jump on the Tommies in the first minute of play when Erin Johnson slammed home her third goal of the season just :39 seconds into the contest. 

St. Thomas was still reeling when the Cobbers struck for the second goal of the game. CC senior Hannah Impola was allowed to skate out of the right corner unattended and fire a shot past Tommie goalie Katie Jetland who had dropped to her knees to make the save. The score at 8:30 kept the Cobbers on edge for the entire first period as they outshot UST 11­3 in the opening frame. St. Thomas had more jump in their skates in the second period. Both teams were able to get quality shots on goals but it was Concordia that came away with the only goal of the period. Mandi Samuelson scored from close range at 14:22 on the power play to give the Cobbers a surprising 3­0 lead. 

That would score would hold up until the final three minutes of the third period. St. Thomas pulled Jetland with just under five minutes to give themselves a 6­on­4 situation after Cobber forward Alyssa Dahl was whistled for a hooking penalty. The Tommies were unable to get the puck past Haroldson in the two­minute, two­man advantage and then Dahl stepped out of the penalty box, the puck found its way right to her stick and she happily slid it into the empty net. 

The only thing left to determine was whether Haroldson would hold onto the shutout. She gave the emphatic answer in the final seconds of play when she stoned Kara Ledel who was wide open just in front of the crease. 

The Tommies had a commanding 19­5 edge in shots in goal in the final period as CC tried to protect their lead. For the game, UST held a 31­26 advantage in shots on goal.  Concordia took five penalties in the game and went 1­for­3 on the power play. The Cobber penalty kill once again lived up to its top two billing in the conference. St. Thomas went scoreless in their four power play attempts.

COBBER LAST GAME RECAP Bethel 0 at Concordia 2 – Saturday, Feb. 3 The saying goes, "better late than never," and that's what happened for Concordia in their 2­0 victory over Bethel on Saturday. The Cobbers were finally able to beat Royal goaltender Beth Spurrier after Spurrier held Concordia scoreless for three straight games and over 188 minutes of play. A pair of Cobber players helped push the team over the edge and back into the win column. Senior forward Brandie Dunn scored both CC goals and freshman goalie Maddie Haroldson made 29 saves to earn her first collegiate shutout. 

The end to Spurrier's shutout streak came without a spectacular play or outstanding individual effort. In fact, it came off the stick of Dunn, who had not scored a goal all season. The straw that finally broke the camel's back came at 8:02 of the first period while the Cobbers were on the power play. It was a routine shot from the point that found its way onto Dunn's stick and caught Spurrier out of position. Dunn was able to put the puck into the net before Spurrier could recover. 

Having finally found a way past the Bethel netminder, Concordia added to their lead 10 minutes later when Dunn notched her second goal of the game, and the season, at the 18:35 mark on an assist from Ceara Bergsrud. 

Sparked by the two­goal outburst in the opening period, the Concordia defense tightened up and refused to allow the Royals any quality chances around the Cobber goal. The teams then skated scoreless for the final 40 minutes to give CC their fourth league win. 

In the end, Concordia held a decided advantage in shots on goal, outshooting the Royals 40­29. CC went 1­for­5 on the power play, while Bethel was held scoreless in their five attempts. 

TOMMIE LAST GAME RECAP UW­River Falls 4 at St. Thomas 1 – Wednesday, Feb. 7 (Courtesy of St. Thomas SID) Amber Lindner stopped 20 of 21 shots in goal and Abby Sunderman had a goal and an assist to lead visiting UW­River Falls to a 4­1 victory over St. Thomas in non­conference women's hockey play Wednesday night in Mendota Heights. 

The Falcons (12­5­4) also received two assists by Cassie LeBlanc and goals from Stefanie Schmitz, Kelly Jensen and Jennna Scanlon. They avenged a 3­2 home loss to the Tommies incurrred Jan. 9. 

Freshman Jill Kobow scored with 4:23 to play for UST to avert a shutout. Freshman Lauren Bradel had 23 saves in goal. 

St. Thomas 1 at Gustavus 0 – Saturday, Feb. 3 Marie Omann's short­handed goal seven seconds into period two stood up as the game winner as the visiting Tommies stunned No. 2­ranked Gustavus 1­0 in Saturday's MIAC women's hockey game in St. Peter. 

The Toms (11­7 overall, 9­3 MIAC) avenged Friday's 8­0 home loss to the Gusties (17­2, 11­1). UST was outshot 39­18, but freshman goalie Lauren Bradel stopped 39 shots in the shutout win. 

Breana Scavo had 17 saves for the Gusties. 

Omann, a freshman from Rocori, now has two collegiate points ­­ both short­ handed goals. She had a short­handed tally to open the scoring in a 3­2 win over Bethel in December. 

The Toms halted three long Gustavus streaks ­­ a 17­game win run on the season, a 33­game MIAC unbeaten streak, and a 34­game home ice unbeaten streak. The Toms also ended Gustavus' bid to become the first conference hockey team to finish 18­0.
