For the most part, our execution was sound, but their athleticism was the difference in the game."Ohio State was limited to 37 shots from the floor after averaging nearly 60 per-game in itsfirst 10 contests. Delaware State 49UCLA 66Marcus Neal’s 15 pts. not enough

Delaware State men's basketball came across the country and into one of college basket-ball's great cathedrals, but were unable to pull the upset falling 66-49 to UCLA on Sundayafternoon at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, California.

"We started off well, but when we went to the bench, we weren't able to keep it going whenour starters checked back in," said head coach Greg Jackson, whose team took on the Bru-ins for the second time in his tenure at DSU. "I think we got out of rhythm, and in our sys-tem we have to possess the ball, but some bad shot selection and some quick shots didn'thelp us."

The Hornets senior combination of shooting guard Marcus Neal and forward Frisco San-didge led the charge once again for the red and blue. Neal posted 15 points on 6-13 shoot-ing, including 2-5 from three point range. Sandidge aided a Hornets run in the second half, notching 10 of his 12 points in the closing stanza, including eight in a row.

It was also a breakout day for freshman forward Terron Stowe, who had career highs withboth nine points and five rebounds in just 12 minutes of action. The five boards were themost by any Hornet on the day. "Terron Stowe did a nice job for us today," said Jackson."Once he gets in shape, I think he'll be a great fit in our system and what we're trying to do."

Freshman forward Reeves Nelson led the Bruins with 21 points on 7-8 shooting. UCLAwasable to beat DSU on the glass 35-25, and converted 26-50 field goal attempts to keep theHornets from getting any closer than 15 in the second half.

Jackson's charges get back to Memorial Hall for the first time in nearly a month on Wednes-day when they take on Lehigh at 7:30 pm for the final non-conference tilt of the season.Check back with DSUHornets.com for all the information on Delaware State basketball thisseason.

Lehigh 73Delaware State 66Sandidge Double-Double Falls Short

Dover, Del. (Dec. 30, 2009) --- It was a thrilling finish down the stretch, but not the result thehome team was looking for as a duel of furious comebacks went to the visitors as DelawareState fell 73-66 in overtime to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at Memorial Hall on Wednesdayevening. The loss spoiled the second double-double of the season for senior forward FriscoSandidge, who had 17 points and 10 boards to lead all Hornets in both categories. Fellowsenior shooting guard Marcus Neal chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds as well. It wasalso an excellent performance for point guard Jay Threatt, who picked five assists and foursteals to add to his 3.0 steals per game average, which placed him 5th in the country en-tering today's game.

DSU (4-7) played to their strengths in the first half, winning the possession battle by forcingeight Lehigh (7-6) turnovers while only conceding three themselves. Sandidge would leadall scorers with six points on 3-4 shooting, and also was the high man with six boards in theopening period. With five minutes left in the second half, the Hornets would lead at 56-49and seemed to be in control, but a 10-0 run by Lehigh would swing the momentum in theother direction. The scoring binge was capped off by a Dave Buchberger three pointer thatgave Lehigh their first lead of the second half at 57-56, and he followed with a layup off aHornet turnover to give Lehigh a 59-56 advantage with a minute remaining.

But Jay Threatt ensured the Hornets would not go down quietly. After the teams exchangedpossessions and Lehigh called timeout, Threatt stuck a clutch three pointer off a baselineinbounds play to tie the score at 59 with 9.2 seconds remaining. After another Lehigh TO,Threatt forced a steal in the Lehigh backcourt and had a path to the basket, but couldn't fin-ish the contested layup, and Neal's follow attempt went wide as well to send both teams tobonus basketball.

In overtime Greg Smith would keep the Hornets in the game by making two big threes, hisonly six points of the contest, to keep the pressure on the Mountain Hawks. But after aDSU press down by one with under a minute left, Zahir Carrington would be all alone underthe basket with the ball and no one near him. The crowd was stunned when he missedthree straight opportunities under the rim, but he was able to convert the fourth attempt andget fouled by Trevor Welcher for the crucial old fashioned three point play and a four pointadvantage with 23 seconds left. From there a Threatt jumper would be rebounded byLehigh, and with the Hornets forced to foul Lehigh would pull away.

Winston-Salem St. 48Delaware State 49Odd’s layup with 0.9 secs seals win

Dover, Del. (Jan. 9, 2010) --- A dramatic layup from freshman guard Alibaba Odd layup with0.9 seconds to go for his only basket of the night was the game winner as the DelawareState Hornets beat the Winston-Salem State Rams 49-48 on Saturday afternoon at Memo-rial Hall on the campus of Delaware State.

With starting forward leading rebounder, and second leading scorer Frisco Sandidge side-lined by injury, the Hornets (5-7, 0-1 MEAC) needed other players to step up, and got stand-out performances and career highs at multiple positions. Senior guard Marcus Neal had acareer high 20 points, including 6-13 from 3 point range, and freshman Terron Stowe pickedup career highs with 12 points, 10 rebounds for the first double-double by a Hornet that was-n't Sandidge this season.

"That says a lot about our character," said head coach Greg Jackson, who picked up his145th win as the leader of the Hornets. "I tell our team all the time when you fight to the end,you give yourself a chance to win ball games like this. I thought our kids did an excellentjob in not giving up."

With a charged up Memorial Hall crowd behind them, Greg Jackson's charges would not godown quietly. Down 37-30 with 10 minutes to go, DSU would cut the advantage to one be-hind four straight points from freshman point guard Jay Threatt and a jumper from MarcusNeal. But a mini run from the Rams extended their advantage back to six. The Hornets fi-nally pulled even for the first time all day with a Neal three pointer with 2:43 remaining. Itappeared to be for naught however when WSSU's Paul Davis found the right end of a wildtip-in with 35 seconds left off a missed perimeter jumper for a four point Ram advantage.

Following a Winston-Salem timeout and down 48-44, point guard Chad Wilson, playing dou-ble digit minutes for the first time all season, fired up a three pointer for his first points of2009-10 and to cut the lead to one with 28.4 to go. With DSU forced to foul, Andrew Jack-son stepped to the line and missed the front end of a one and one to give DSU the ball backwith 9.6 to go, and 94 feet from victory.

Wilson brought the ball up and used his speed to get to the lane off the left wing, and foundAlibaba Odd cutting baseline for an almost uncontested layup with 0.9 to go. The last sec-ond heave from the Rams would go wanting, giving DSU their first victory since beatingDelaware on Dec. 1st.
