StoryLazarus Croft, the dictator of Arcadia reigns over four nations, but now he’s lying on his deathbed with no son behind. Therefore, he orders a dramatic battle among the four generals, which decides who will win the throne and complete power over the whole empire. The battle takes place at Cloverfield, a place covered by rocks, deep blue lakes and grassy fields.

IntroductionThe rules are based on reality, thus the power of different units and most of the possible actions too. And just like in a real war, everything which is not forbidden is allowed. Discover all hidden tricks, let’s go!

MissionThe goal of the game is to bring home the flag or to collect 3 medals. There’s no elimination, if someone runs out of all units and golds, can still collect gold by rolling the dice. The game can be played in 2V2 team formation too. In team mode, medals cannot be collected and the flag has to be taken to the carrier’s base.

Building the Battlefield1. Join the 5x5 cell sized modules forming a large rectangle, then put the 2x3 sized mini-module in the center of the map.2. Shuffle the standing rocks, then put the 6 flag holder rocks on the mini-module and place common rocks on all shadowed fields on the map.3. Players select colors, place their bases onto corners and get 10 gold coins per person.4. Appoint starting player, fix the flag in that middle rock which is further from starting player’s base.

ActionAction can be moving across fields, shooting or using a skill. Actions are identical, their order can be varied freely and they can be divided between player’s units. Actions are always optional, it’s not a must to use all of them, but the rest is wasted. Actions can be bought too, each extra action costs 1 gold, but a player can have no more than 4 actions in a turn. Action can be made forward-backward and left-right but not diagonally.

StartAfter choosing colors, each player places his base in the nearest corner of the battlefield and gets 10 gold coins. Who starts can be decided in several ways; by throwing dice, by raffling rocks or by agreement as well. First turn begins with throwing dice, buying some units and executing as many actions as shown on the dice. Order between purchases and actions can be varied freely, gained gold can be spent anytime within a turn and skills of acquired units can be used immediately. Placing a new unit on the base requires no action. Moving units must enter the battlefield from the base. Once the actions are out, the next player follows.

DiceNot a usual one as sides are numbered with 1-2-2-3-3-4. There’s no bad side, because if a player throws 1, gets an extra gold for free.

MovingA basic principle is that any movement can be realized only by soldiers. Vehicles are immobile on their own; they need to be driven by a soldier. For example, if a player wants to start with a tank, then he needs to buy a tank with a soldier, put the soldier into the tank and place them on the base afterwards. Fields covered by rocks or water block the movements by default.

ShootingCosts 1 action, independently from the range. Soldier can only eliminate another soldier with his rifle. But the bullet of specialist or tank destroys everything on the target field, except base, anti-tank barrier and flag. Tank can shoot over several fields, if there’s no rock or vehicle in the way. Each eliminated unit is returned to stock, exploded rocks have to be mixed with the rest.

BuildingSkill of soldier. After purchasing, bridge, rock or anti-tank barrier can be built onto a neighboring field, also from vehicle.

Swimming and ClimbingSkill of soldier with no equipment or flag. He can swim across water fields and climb through rocks, but cannot stop there at the end of turn. Swimming and climbing are movements, thus cost 1 action per field.

DiscoveringSkill of specialist. Using his detector, can reveal any neighboring rock for 1 action. Also from vehicle.

Quick OperationOperations within a field are quick, therefore they do not cost any action. Taking up or putting down an equipment or the flag, boarding or leaving a vehicle, picking up gold coins or medals from the battlefield are all quick operations for example.

Game Items

BaseEach team has an invulnerable base in one corner of the map. New items can enter the battlefield only from here.

FlagInvulnerable item which can be picked up only by soldier, even on the top of a rock. Once a player gets the flag to his base, means instant victory for him. If the flag carrier is killed, then the flag remains on the current field.

GoldGold is the only accepted currency in war, for which the player on move can buy action, soldier, vehicle

or other items from stock. New units need to enter the battlefield immediately, it is not allowed to keep them in reserve. It’s very possible that something is out, in this case players need to wait until it returns to stock, like a tank is being exploded for example. Once a unit is bought, there’s no money-back, but players can make deals or donations between each other.

MedalSome rocks hide medal. Having 3 pieces means instant victory. Otherwise, a medal can be exchanged to 2 gold coins anytime.

Stock Units

Soldier Can shoot another soldier with his rifle, can drive bus or tank, can build bridge, rock and anti-tank barrier. Without a backpack, he can cross rocks or water fields too.

BusFast vehicle, which has 1 field free move in each turn, even if the driver boards after a few actions for example. Its seats are identical, driver can sit anywhere. Bus has no weapons, but the crew can use all of its skills, consequently can shoot out as well.

TankThe bulldozer of the battlefield; it can flatten out or explode almost anything. The shooting range is 2 fields by default, but it cannot shoot over rocks and other vehicles.

EquipmentA symbol of anti-tank rifle, detector and developed skills, but useless on its own. If a soldier takes it on his back, he becomes a specialist. An equipment can be bought from stock or may be found on the battlefield. Soldier in vehicle can be upgraded too.

SpecialistMore qualified and more equipped soldier. His anti-tank rifle destroys everything on the target field and his detector reveals any neighboring rock. Due to developed vehicle handling skills, a bus can have 2 free moves instead of 1 and a tank can shoot in 3 fields range instead of 2.

BridgeCan be built on water by a soldier. Passage for any unit.

Anti-tank BarrierInvulnerable item and impenetrable barrier for vehicles. Can be built by soldier. Placing it under a vehicle means it’s blocked forever.

RocksRocks are dangerous covers. Soldier can climb over, tank or specialist can explode them. Once exploded, the bottom of the rock should be checked as it can hide gold, medal or skull too. In case of good stuff, the rock should be replaced by a gold or a medal disk, which can be gained by any player who reaches that field. Skull means a sudden explosion, thus everything gets destroyed within 3x3 fields area around the rock. Surrounding rocks should be revealed at first, because chain-reaction is also possible. Only gold coins or medals inside other rocks survive explosions, as well as invulnerable items of course.

Same FieldThe next table is the heart of game rules, because it illustrates which items can share a field and what quick operations are possible between them. Column on the left shows what unit arrives on a field, where the item from the top row is already there. If there are several colors in a cell, then the player on turn can choose from the options.

Soldier without backpack can go through tank rock or water, but cannot stay there after turn. Any item can occur on base and bridge but rock.

Questions and Answers

What counts 1 round?- If each player had his turn, so the dice made a full round.

What is backpack?- Common name of equipment and flag.

Climbing with flag?- When a soldier picks up the flag on the top of a rock, he is unable to climb anymore. The only exception is that he can leave the rock.

Exchange- It is not allowed to move any item across fields without action. And only soldiers can execute movements.

Rules of the road- Vehicles cannot share one field and no item fits next to the tank.

Leaving the tank- Since no item fits next to the tank, leaving is possible only to neighbour-ing fields, which counts as movement and costs 1 action.

Shoot the driver!- Both tank and bus are armoured vehicles, thus it is impossible to hurt the crew from outside.

Background StoryThis box is the outcome of a group of four which has made the decision to create a game in their free time that not only brings fun to the life of each generation, but it also has tons of fascinating situations just like reality does. The first prototype saw the light in the early 2000’s to reach its final form as a complete game after university. This is Men in Tanks©, a board game, demanding the perfect mixture of strategy and luck for the glorious win.

From bus to bus- Free movement is a property of the vehicle, therefore by changing bus-es, free movement can be used several times, but only once per vehicle within a turn.

Vulnerable?- With the exception of invulnerable items (base, flag, anti-tank barrier) practically everything can be destroyed, attacked by the proper unit.
