• Nicholls added seven FBS transfers to the squad this season. Joining the team are OL Alex Anderson (Tex-as), DB Jerrion Burton (New Mexico St.), RB Kendall Bussey (Texas A&M), DB Alonzo Craighton (Minne-sota), DL Emanuel Dayries (Arizona State), WR Gabe Fuselier (UL-Lafayette), and TE Bry’Kiethon Mouton (LSU). Four saw action in the win at Kansas (Ander-son, Bussey, Dayries, Fuselier).

• Bussey was named SLC Offensive Player of the Week for his play at Kansas where he rushed for 123 yards and scored a touchdown.

• The Colonels led the Southland Conference with a total of 14 players named Preseason All-Southland, and had the most first-teamers with 10. Ten of the selections were automatic from being named All-SLC last season.

TABARY NAMED TO WATCH LIST FOR CFPA PERFORMER OF THE YEAR• Senior quarterback James Tabary has been named one of 36 athletes to make up the 2018 CFPA FCS Per-former of the Year watch list.• A preseason all-conference selection, the New Orleans native is in his third and final season as the starting QB for the Cowboys. He’s one of three players from the Southland Conference to be named to the list (Sam Houston State wide receivers Davion Davis and Nathan Stewart).• Tabary spent time working and learning at the Manning Passing Academy over the summer.

JT ON THE VERGE OF REWRITING SCHOOL PASSING RECORDS• Already the school career record holder with five 300-yard passing games in his career and is a co-holder of a single-game record with five TD passes in a game, Tabary is well within striking distance of career record such as passing yards, touchdowns, completions and attempts.• His 355 passing yards at HBU last Saturday moved into fifth on the school’s career passing yards list with 6,108 while his 32 pass attempts moved him into sixth with 823 in his career.• He’s thrown for 200 yards or more in 16 of his 24 games played as a Cowboy, needing three more to tie and four to break Blake Prejean’s career record of 19 games. • He ranks 2nd and 3rd on the list for most passing yards in a game - 384 at Northwestern State on Oct. 22, 2016 and 376 yards vs. Nicholls on Oct. 1, 2016. HEAD COACH

He’s a mastermind of the defense. One year after relinquishing his defensive coordinator duties while taking over as the McNeese head coach, Lance Guidry reassumed those duties in year two of his head coaching stint and brought the Cowboys’ Defense With Attitude to the FCS mountaintop. The2017seasonforMcNeesewasabittersweetone.TheCowboysfinished9-2ontheyearbutwereleftontheoutside when it came to the FCS postseason playoffs. That despite being ranked in the nation’s top 25 polls for most of the season. Guidry spearheaded a defense that ended the season ranked No. 1 in the FCS in rushing with a school and SouthlandConference record 54.5 yards per game allowed. That average is also ranked as the seventh-lowestamount allowed in the history of the FCS. The Cowboys also ranked 13th in scoring defense (17.1 ppg) and were 17thinpassefficiencydefense(109.69).

In the Southland Conference rankings, Guidry’s defense ranked No. 1 in eight statistical categories and second in three others. That is the No. 1 thing to me. When you come to work, you must come with a positive attitude. Hap-py people are usually successful. “Compete.Wewillcompeteonandoffthefield.Toughness. We will never quit and will have great pride. Number four is preparation. You have to know what to expect, and when adversity hits, you willknow how to respond. Accountability. We will always be prompt and dependable. We will set goals for ev-ery task, and every task will be met. “The last thing to me is team unity. We are a family here at McNeese. It will always be family here.” McNeeserepresentsGuidry’sfirstfull-timeheadcoaching job at the collegiate level.
