2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 | July 1, 2015 vs. FC Dallas | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes

Sporting Kansas City resumes their 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign in the Round of 16 against MLS rival FC Dallas on Wednesday at Sporting Park. The matchup will be the third competitive meeting between Sporting KC and FC Dallas in 2015, with both sides claiming a league victory on home soil. The winner between Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas will earn a berth in the tournament quarterfinals and will meet the victor from the Houston Dynamo-Colorado Rapids matchup. If Sporting KC advances, the quarterfinal contest would be played at Sporting Park on July 21/22. The clubs have squared off just once all-time in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. In the 2004 quarterfinals, Kansas City topped Dallas 4-0 en route to the team’s first Open Cup championship. Sporting KC progressed to the Round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over St. Louis FC (USL) on June 16 in front of a standing-room only crowd at Sporting Park. That same evening, FC Dallas advanced with a 4-1 win over OKC Energy FC (USL) at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium on the campus of Texas Christian University.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Coming off a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, Sporting KC (7-3-6, 27 points) is riding a six-game home winning streak in all competitions since the start of May. During that stretch, the club has posted five shutouts and outscored opponents by an aggregate score of 13-2. Sporting KC’s three losses are two fewer than any other MLS team and they remain the only side not to lose consecutive league matches in 2015. Midfield playmaker Benny Feilhaber has led the way with five goals and 10 assists (all competitions) and an MLS Player of the Month award for April. First-year forward Krisztian Nemeth has spearheaded the attack to the tune of seven goals, two assists and June’s MLS Player of the Month award. Dom Dwyer, the club’s leading scorer in 2014, has added five goals of his own, making Sporting KC the only MLS side to have three players with five or more league goals. In defense, club captain and U.S. international Matt Besler has anchored a defense that has posted shutouts in nine of 17 matches across all competitions. Sporting KC has posted seven shutouts in 10 home games this season, including six of the last seven (all competitions) at Sporting Park. Goalkeeper Tim Melia leads MLS with a 0.63 goals against average and boasts a 6-1-2 record in all competitions since taking the starting role in early May.

FC DALLAS One point behind Sporting KC in the Western Conference standings, FC Dallas (7-5-5, 26 points) snapped a six-game winless skid in MLS competition with a 2-0 win over in-state rival Houston Dynamo on Friday. It was the first home match at Toyota Stadium for Oscar Pareja’s side since May 15, coming on the heels of a five-game road trip that yielded three losses and two draws. Forward Fabian Castillo leads FC Dallas with a team-high six goals and six assists in all competitions, including a goal and an assist in his club’s 3-1 win over Sporting KC on March 14. MLS veteran Blas Perez has added five goals of his own, while Argentine midfielder Mauro Diaz has recorded five assists. FC Dallas raced out to the best start of any MLS team in 2015, winning their first three matches and drawing their fourth during the month of March, a stretch that included three shutouts.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has been held annually since 1914 and is open to all amateur/professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest-running open soccer tournament. Similar to other domestic cups worldwide, the U.S. Open Cup is a knockout-style tournament with home field determined by a coin toss. Sporting KC has twice lifted the Dewar Challenge Trophy as champions of the competition in 2004 and 2012, while FC Dallas won the title in 1997. Now in its 102nd edition, the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was headlined by the largest field in the modern era (1995-present) with 89 teams in contention when the first round began in May. Sixteen teams remain ahead of the Round of 16 (Fifth Round) to be held June 30 and July 1. The 2015 champion will win $250,000 in prize money, while the runner-up receives $60,000. The furthest-advancing team from each lower division league receives $15,000, including the NASL’s New York Cosmos and the USL’s Charlotte Independence who are competing in the Round of 16. The tournament winner qualifies for the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

ABOUT THE LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP

Sporting KC and FC Dallas have met twice already during the 2015 MLS regular season and are set to meet once more on Sept. 18 at Sporting Park. In the two previous clashes, both sides recorded convincing wins on home soil.

FCD 3-1 SKC -- March 14 at Toyota Stadium Sporting KC suffered their first loss of 2015 in a 3-1 defeat at FC Dallas. SKC 4-0 FCD -- May 29 at Sporting Park Sporting KC stretched the team’s unbeaten run to six games, the longest active with a 4-0 victory over FC Dallas Sporting Park. Krisztian Nemeth scored the game winner in the 19th minute with his team-leading sixth goal of the season, while Benny Feilhaber, Kevin Ellis and Graham Zusi all added goals of their own in the second half. Manager Peter Vermes earned his 100th coaching victory in all competitions since taking the role in August 2009.

Amateur teams comprised 42 of the 89 entries and entered the competition in the play-in and first rounds. The remaining 47 participants encompassed Division I, Division II and Division III professional clubs, who entered in the second (USL PRO), third (NASL) and fourth (MLS) rounds, respectively. A new, geographically-based random draw has resulted in a fixed bracket from the Round of 16 onward. The 16 Fourth Round winners were divided geographically (regardless of league affiliation) into groups of four, and a random draw determined the pairings within each group. See page 5 for the 2015 schedule, bracket and results.
