Kansas City holds a 54-46-0 (.540) all-time advantage over Denver in the 100 previous meetings between the two clubs (99 regular season, one postseason). The 54 Chiefs wins against the Broncos ties for the club’s highest win total against any individual opponent as the Chiefs have also beaten AFC West foe Oakland 54 times. The Chiefs recorded a 44-24 victory at INVESCO Field (1/3/10) and are looking to win back-to-back games against the Broncos since taking four straight from ’99-00. RB Jamaal Charles set a franchise single-game rushing record with 259 yards with a pair of TDs. LB Derrick Johnson tied an NFL record, becoming the third linebacker in league annals to record two INT return TDs. The win snapped an eight game losing streak in Denver and marked the Chiefs fi rst victory at INVESCO Field. Denver won the most recent meeting between the two squads at Arrowhead by a 44-13 margin (12/6/09). Kansas City’s most recent season sweep of Denver came in 2000 while the Broncos last swept the Chiefs in 2007. The Broncos have won four of the last six contests in this series.

The Chiefs last back-to-back road victories against the Broncos came when Kansas City posted a 23-22 victory (9/24/00) and a 16-10 decision (12/5/99). The Chiefs overcame an eight-point fourth-quarter defi cit to claim a victory in the club’s last visit to Mile High Stadium in 2000. In total, the Broncos have won 11 of the last 16 regular season meetings between these two clubs in Denver. The Broncos produced a 14-10 victory in the only postseason meeting between the two teams, a ’97 AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Arrowhead (1/4/98).

The Chiefs and Broncos will square off for the 100th regular season installment of this division clash when Kansas City visits Denver on Sunday (11/14). The Chiefs are seeking to register back-to-back wins at Denver for the fi rst time since ’99-00. Dating back to the Chiefs last visit to Denver, Head Coach Todd Haley’s squad has won six of its last nine contests. KC is one of eight AFC clubs with fi ve or more victories and is seeking to stay atop the AFC West the standings. All three of the Chiefs losses have been by 10 points or less. Kansas City is looking to rebound after suffering a 23-20 OT loss at Oakland (11/7). The Broncos enjoyed a bye last week after a 24-16 loss vs. San Francisco in London (10/31), marking the club’s fourth consecutive setback. Denver hasn’t dropped fi ve in a row in the course of a single season since ’90. The Chiefs racked up 317 rushing yards in their last visit to INVESCO Field (1/3/10), including a franchise-record 259 yards from RB Jamaal Charles, as KC registered a 44-24 victory to close out the 2009 regular season. The Chiefs currently lead the NFL, averaging 179.6 ypg thanks to Charles (719 yards) and RB Thomas Jones (570 yards), who are on pace to become just the seventh tandem of teammates in NFL history to each top the 1,000-yard rushing plateau in a single season. The Chiefs have piled up 842 rushing yards in their last four games, a total higher than 12 teams have accumuated all season. Kansas City ranks eighth in scoring defense, permitting 18.1 ppg. The Chiefs are one of seven clubs that have held six of their opponents to 20 points or less this season. The Chiefs have pitched back-to-back shutouts in the fi rst half of their last two contests and are seeking to accomplish that feat for the fi rst time in three straight games since 11/4/73 - 11/18/73. KC’s defense also ranks ninth in both rushing defense (98.4 ypg) and third-down effi ciency (35.9%). LB Tamba Hali is tied for third in the NFL with 8.0 sacks. WR Dwayne Bowe has caught a TD in four straight contests and would match a franchise record owned by E Chris Burford (9/8/62-10/12/62) and WR Otis Taylor (10/23/66-11/20/66) if he posts a TD catch for a fi fth consecutive game. Bowe is on pace for 14 TD catches which would surpass the single-season club record of 12 was set by Burford in ’62. Bowe has 17 receptions for 268 yards with six TDs over his last four games, the most TD catches in the NFL during that timeframe. Next week Kansas City is home vs. Arizona (11/21), while Denver travels to San Diego (11/22) for Monday Night Football.

THE FIRST FAMILY OF FOURTH DOWN

On Sunday Kansas City P Dustin Colquitt will face his brother, Denver P Britton Colquitt, for the fi rst time in an NFL game. It will also mark the fi rst known occurrence in NFL history that two brothers have punted against each other in the same game. The Colquitts are no strangers to the NFL and the Haley family. Their father, Craig Colquitt, punted eight seasons in the NFL, including seven campaigns with Pittsburgh (’78-84). The elder Colquitt was drafted in the third round of the ’78 NFL Draft by Dick Haley, who served as the Director of Player Personnel of the Steelers for 20 seasons (’71-90) and is the father of Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley. The younger Haley worked in many capacities for the Steelers. His many duties included fi elding punts from Craig Colquitt in pregame warm-ups. Colquitt earned Super Bowl XIII and XIV rings with Pittsburgh. All three Colquitts, as well as a cousin, Jimmy Colquitt, handled the punting duties at the University of Tennessee.

It was a record-setting day for a pair of former Texas Longhorns as RB Jamaal Charles set a franchise single-game rushing record with 259 yards and a pair of TDs. Meanwhile, LB Derrick Johnson tied an NFL record, becoming the third linebacker in league annals to record two INT return TDs. Kansas City’s 44-24 win knocked Denver out of the playoff chase and gave the Chiefs their first-ever victory at INVESCO Field. The Chiefs quickly marched 86 yards on their first possession as QB Matt Cassel opened with three straight completions including a 50-yard pass to WR Terrance Copper. FB Mike Cox dove in from one yard out on the drive’s fourth play to give the Chiefs an early 7-0 lead. On Denver’s next possession, Chiefs DE Glenn Dorsey sacked QB Kyle Orton for a one-yard loss and the Broncos were eventually forced to punt. Charles broke off a 52-yard run on KC’s third possession, setting the Chiefs up at the Denver 35-yard line. Two plays later RB Tim Castille attempted an ill-advised throwback pass to Cassel that was intercepted by CB Andre Goodman at the Denver five-yard line. Denver responded with a 10-play, 95-yard drive. A pass interference call in the end zone gave the Broncos the ball on KC’s one-yard line. RB Knowshon Moreno punched it in on third down, evening the score at 7-7. After exchanging punts, K Ryan Succop’s 20-yard FG put the Chiefs up 10-7 with 5:03 left in the second quarter. Denver answered when K Matt Prater knocked through a 25-yard FG with 0:27 left in the first half to knot the score at 10-10. WR Quinten Lawrence opened the second half with a 26-yard end around. A 15-yard run, plus a pair of Denver penalties, would set the stage for a five-yard TD run from Charles to give the Chiefs a 17-10 lead. Denver answered quickly as Orton hit WR Brandon Lloyd for 44 yards set up a one-yard Moreno TD to knot the score at 17-17 with 8:25 left in the third quarter. Kansas City’s next drive stalled and Succop hit a 36-yard FG to give the Chiefs the 20-17 lead. Johnson kept the Chiefs momentum rolling as he intercepted an Orton pass on Denver’s first play of the next drive and returned it for a 45-yard TD to give the Chiefs a 27-17 lead. CB Ty Law put the Broncos back in business when he returned an INT to the three-yard line. Orton hit WR Brandon Stokley in the end zone to make the score 27-24. Kansas City extended the lead to 30-24 with 12:57 left in the game on a 47-yard Succop FG. Johnson haulted Denver’s next drive with a 60-yard INT return TD, extending the Chiefs lead to 37-24 with 9:52 left in the game. After another Broncos punt, Charles scampered for a 56-yard TD on the second play of the drive, making the score 44-24 with 6:25 left. CB Brandon Flowers brought down Kansas City’s third INT of the day as he grabbed an errant Orton pass in the end zone with 2:50 left to play, effectively sealing the Chiefs win.

GAME NOTES• Kansas City’s 44 points were the club’s most at Denver since a 45-24 win (10/1/72).• Kansas City’s 317 rushing yards were the fourth-highest total in team history.• RB Jamaal Charles 259 rushing yards were the eighth-highest single-game total in NFL history.

THE LAST GAMERaiders 23, Chiefs 20 OTRaiders 23, Chiefs 20 OT

November 7, 2010 • Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum • 61,075

The Chiefs had a seven-game road winning streak at Oakland snapped as K Sebastian Janikowski drilled a 33-yard FG in overtime to give Oakland a 23-20 victory.

After a scoreless first quarter a defensive pass interference call put the Chiefs at the Oakland 14-yard line. On third and two, Cassel hit TE Tony Moeaki for five yards to the Oakland one-yard line. Moeaki’s catch was initially ruled a TD, but was challenged by the Raiders. The play was overturned, and QB Matt Cassel ran for an apparent TD on the next play, but a holding penalty moved the ball back to the 11. Cassel hit WR Verran Tucker in the back of the end zone for an 11-yard TD to put the Chiefs up 7-0.

LB Derrick Johnson forced a RB Darren McFadden fumble on the Raiders ensuing possession that was recovered by DE Wallace Gilberry at the Oakland 26-yard line. After failing to pick up the first down, Chiefs K Ryan Succop sent a 43-yard FG through the uprights to extend the Chiefs lead to 10-0. CB Javier Arenas appeared to give the Chiefs a 17-0 edge when he returned an Oakland punt for a 72-yard TD, but the play was nullified by an illegal block in the back.

Cassel hit Moeaki for 23 yards on a wheel route up the left sideline, pushing the ball to the Kansas City 47-yard line. On third and nine, Cassel connected with WR Terrance Copper for 20 yards. Cassel then found Bowe for nine yards, bringing Succop onto the field for a 41-yard FG attempt. A holding penalty negated the FG and pushed the attempt back to 51 yards. Succop then tried a pooch punt that rolled into the end zone.

On the Raiders next play, S Jon McGraw intercepted a QB Jason Campbell pass at the Oakland 45-yard line. The Chiefs had a golden scoring opportunity, but Cassel had a pass tipped into the arms of Raiders CB Jeremy Ware in the end zone.

On the second-half kickoff Oakland WR Jacoby Ford scampered for a 94-yard TD, making the score 10-7. Arenas then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Raiders recovered at the Chiefs 34-yard line. The Chiefs defense held and Janikowski’s 47-yard FG attempt went wide left, leaving the Chiefs lead at 10-7.

On KC’s next possession the Chiefs were able to knock through a Succop 25-yard FG to make the score 13-7 with 9:41 left in the third period. The Raiders answered with seven points of their own. Campbell found T Khalif Barnes, who had reported as a tackle eligible, in the end zone giving Oakland a 14-13 lead. The Raiders were driving again, but the Chiefs forced a 23 yard Janikowski FG to make the count 17-13.

The Chiefs went three and out but LB Demorrio Williams forced a fumble on the Oakland punt return that was recovered by Tucker at the Oakland 30-yard line. Facing third and 11, Cassel hit WR Dwayne Bowe in the end zone for a 20-yard TD, giving the Chiefs the 20-17 lead with 6:13 left to play in the fourth quarter.

After exchanging punts, Campbell hit Ford for 29 yards and a first down. Oakland spiked the ball and Janikowski kicked a 42-yard FG to tie the game at 20-20.

Kansas City got the ball to start overtime but went three and out, giving Oakland the ball at its own 38-yard line. On Oakland’s first play, Campbell hit Ford for a 47-yard gain to the Kansas City 15. Janikowski’s 33-yard field goal attempt split the uprights giving Oakland the 23-20 win.
