SCOUTING ALABAMA22 Alabama welcomes the Lady Tigers to Tus-caloosa sporting a 2-0 record. The Crimson Tide rolled past Kennesaw State 7-1 in the season opener and outlasted Samford 2-1 in game two of the season.22 The Crimson Tide returned eight starters and 16 letterwinners from the 2010 squad that fi n-ished 8-8-2. 22 Freshman forward Laura Lee Smith leads Alabama with three goals thus far. Six players have accounted for Alabama’s nine goals.

INSIDE THE SERIES22 Alabama and Memphis meet for the sixth time on Friday. The series began in 2006 with Ala-bama taking the fi rst match 1-0 in the Bluff City. Memphis is unbeaten in the last four meetings with a 3-0-1 mark with the lone tie coming in the 2008 meeting. Overall, Memphis leads the se-ries 3-1-1 and has outscored the Crimson Tide 9-3 in those fi ve matches.

SCOUTING SAMFORD22 Samford sports a 1-1 record on the season prior to a Friday matchup at UAB. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 2-0 victory at Belmont before falling short at home against Alabama on Aug. 21. 22 Samford returns eight starters and 13 letter-winners from last year’s squad that fi nished 13-6-3 overall. 22 Three different players have provided the three goals for the Bulldogs thus far. In net, Alyssa Whitehead has 12 saves on the young season and has allowed just two goals in the two games.

INSIDE THE SERIES22 Samford and Memphis meet for the fi fth time and the second-straight season. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 3-1 after claiming the fi rst three games in the series. Memphis is 0-2 at Samford having been outscored 3-1 in those two matches.

MEMPHIS IN ROAD OPENERS22 The U of M has posted a record of 7-9 all-time in the road opener of a season. The Lady Tigers dropped their fi rst seven road openers in school history, but have won fi ve-straight dating back to the 2006 season.

LADY TIGERS START 2-022 Memphis opened the season with a 3-1 vic-tory over LSU at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Christabel Oduro, Kelley Gravlin and Kaitlyn Atkins provided the scoring for the U of M and Elise-Kuhar Pitters made three saves to seal the win. 22 Freshmen would again key a victory in the second match of the season as the Lady Tigers topped UALR 3-1 on Sunday. Melissa Smith, Kylie Davis and Taylor Isenhower provided the goals and three freshmen added assists in the match. 22 Memphis starts the season 2-0 for the third-straight season and eighth time in program his-tory. The Lady Tigers have started a season 3-0 just one time in program history (2010).

AUGUST RUSH22 As the summer winds to a close, the U of M may be sad to see the calendar fl ip past August. In 16 seasons, Memphis is 16-5-1 all-time in the month of August and is unbeaten in the last 14 matches in the month of August dating back to the 2003 season. 22 Since their last loss in the month of August (8/31/03-Ole Miss), Memphis has outscored its opponents 54-5. 22 The August 19 season opener was the earli-est in the 16 year history of the program. Last year, Memphis set the earliest with the season opener on August 20.

ROAD WARRIORS22 The sign of a good team is its play on the road and the Lady Tigers have had some great suc-cess playing away from the Bluff City. In the last four seasons, Memphis is 24-6-3 in road games. The Lady Tigers are 9-3-0 in non-conference road games since the 2007 season.

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS22 Since the 2007 season, the Lady Tiger de-fense has helped the U of M to a 62-4-5 record when opponents score one or fewer goals. In that same span, Memphis has 44 shutouts.

THREE...IS THE MAGIC NUMBER22 When scoring three or more goals in a match, the U of M carries a 79-6-1 record all-time. Un-der Head Coach Brooks Monaghan, Memphis is 58-3-1. FRESH FACES22 Of the 31 players on the 2011 roster, 15 have yet to play in a collegiate game. With the ex-ception of Kelley Gravlin, a redshirt-freshman, 14 newcomers join the Lady Tigers for the 2011 campaign. eight freshmen saw minutes in the fi rst two matches of the season with Gravlin, Kaitlyn Atkins, Natalia Gomez-Junco, Olivia Borkenstein and Carly Cassady earning a start-ing nod in both matches.

DOWN BUT NOT OUT22 Last season, Memphis went 2-4 when op-ponents scored fi rst. The Lady Tigers posted comeback victories over Alabama and Ole Miss. In the last two seasons, Memphis is a combined 3-10 when opponents score fi rst.

The Lady Tigers had one 10-plus win season in the fi rst nine seasons as a program, but Mem-phis has won 11-plus games in each of the past seven seasons. PRESEASON AWARDS22 Senior defender Lizzy Simonin was selected the Conference USA Preseason Defensive Play-er of the Year by the leagues 12 head coaches. Simonin is the reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Year after moving from forward to defend-er last season. 22 Simonin was tabbed as one of 30 candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The award focuses on the total student-athlete and encour-ages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their com-munities. Simonin is the second Lady Tiger in the last two seasons to earn the honor. 22 Simonin was ranked 73rd in TopDrawerSoc-cer.com’s Preseason Top 100 Upperclassmen. The top 100 upperclassmen list will be updated throughout the season. 22 The NSCAA Top-25 Preseason Poll was released Aug. 9 and the Lady Tigers received votes. It is the second-straight season the U of M has opened the season in the polls whether ranked or receiving votes.

CLEAN SHEET22 Last season, Memphis posted 11 shutouts, tied for the second-most in school history. Just in the last two seasons combined, Memphis has kept opponents off the scoreboard in 23 match-es. In that span, the Lady Tigers have posted shutouts in three-straight games three times and back-to-back shutouts eight times.

IN THE POLLS22 Memphis entered the top-25 rankings this week as the NSCAA ranks the Lady Tigers 25th in the country. The U of M began the season receiving votes and enters the top-25 after a 2-0 start to the season. ONE FOR THE THUMB22 Redshirt-seniors Elise Kuhar-Pitters and Me-lissa Smith have the unique opportunity to win a fi fth championship this season. The pair has en-dured various injuries throughout their respec-tive career and is headed into the 2011 season as winners of four-straight titles.

CANADA...EH?22 If you take a look at the Lady Tigers roster you will see seven players from various provinces of Canada. Various Canadians have played a ma-jor role in Memphis claiming four-straight C-USA Championships. Of the seven Canadians on the current roster, fi ve of the seven have a com-bined 14 championship rings. Alex Craig and Kylie Davis are the newest members of Lady Tiger Soccer from Canada.
