Season No. 121The University of Maine football teams enters its 121st season of intercollegiate football in 2011 with an all-time record of 493-468-38 for a winning

percentage of 51.2 percent.

Coming Off a Top-10 SeasonThe Black Bears are coming off one of the best seasons in program history, going 9-4 and advancing to the NCAA Final Eight. Maine finished the season ranked #8 in the national polls, the highest-ranked team in the Colonial Athletic Association.

The 1,000th GameMaine’s first game of the season against Boston College will be the 1,000th game in program history.

The 100th GameThe Black Bears’ Homecoming Game against New Hampshire will be the 100th in the storied rivalry between the two sides. The Wildcats hold the series edge 48-43-8. The last four games have each been decided by four points or less. Furthermore, three out of the last four contests have had conference and/or division championship implications.

Boston College The FBS OpponentMaine’s Division I Football Bowl Subdivision opponent in 2012 is Boston College. The two squads last tangled on Sept. 30, 2006, with the Eagles winning 22-0. Maine and BC first met in 1913, with Maine taking the 6-0 win. The Black Bears would again beat the Eagles the next season, this time by a 26-7 score and would also take the 1915 meeting, 14-0. The Eagles would get revenge and take the next three in the series by scores of 42-0 in 1929, 56-0 in 1967 and the 22-0 win in 2006. The series stands at 3-3. The Black Bears are 1-9 all-time against schools from the FBS, with the 9-7 triumph over Mississippi State in 2004 counting as the win.

Returning All-CAA PlayersMaine returns six players who were named to All-CAA teams. Wide receiver Maurice McDonald and offensive lineman Chris Howley were named to the First Team while tight end Justin Perillo, offensive lineman Josh Spearin and defensive lineman Michael Cole were named to the Second Team. Cornerback Kendall James was named to the Third Team. McDonald and Howley were also named to the New England Football Writers Association All-New England Team as well. In addition, Howley was named an ECAC Second Team All-Star.

Return of DonteThe Black Bear linebacking corps, already returning five players who saw significant time (Troy Russell, Arron Achey, Troy Eastman, Sam Shipley and Shawn Bodtmann), will get even better as All-CAA backer and 2011 Preseason All-American Donte Dennis returns. Dennis redshirted last season due to injury but will be 100% healthy and should make the linebacker unit one of the best in the CAA.

Pair of Seniors and SophomoresMaine should have good depth at wide receiver in 2012. All-CAA selection senior Maurice McDonald will lead the contingent while fellow senior Derrick Johnson returns after starting the first three games last season before suffering a season-ending injury. Sophomores Damarr Aultman and Arthur Williams saw a lot of action after Johnson went down, and even more when McDonald missed the last four games. Aultman and Williams performed admirably, each finishing the season with more than 500 yards receiving.

Looking for 3rd Playoffs in 5 Years The Black Bears are looking for their third NCAA Playoff appearance in five years in 2012, which would be a first in program history. Maine advanced to the playoffs in 2008 in addition to last season, and an appearance in the 2012 playoffs would give Maine its second back-to-back playoff run dating back to 2001-02.

Challenging ScheduleMaine finished last season playing the 11th-most difficult schedule in the country and third in the CAA behind Villanova and New Hampshire.

Wasilewski the QBJuniors Marcus Wasilewski and John Ebeling battled it out in spring and preseason practice before Wasilewski was named the starter. Ebeling will still see plenty of playing time though, as he is currently first on the depth chart for slot receiver.

Experienced O-LineComing into the season, the four returnees on the offensive line (Chris Howley, Jeff Gakos, Josh Spearin and Garret Williamson) have a combined 101 career starts in their tenure at Maine.
