The Galloping RangersDecember 2012/Janurary 2013

Page 2: Galloping Rangers - December/January

The Special Needs Department provided quite a treat for staff and students on October 31 as they hosted TSD’s first Disability Awareness Fair. Students of all ages attended the event and had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience related to a variety of disabilities. Activities included wheelchair races, using a cane to navigate an obstacle course while blindfolded, using a Brailler to type your name, experiencing various communication devices, blindfolded navigation through a tactile house, and more. Monica Kurtz was the Chair of the Disability Awareness Fair, and she worked with a team of folks in the Special Needs Department to put on an educational and inspirational event. Ms. Kurtz explained, “We decided to do

the Disability Awareness Fair to create a way for students and staff to experience what it might be like to have a variety of disabilities. It was a group effort, with help from a lot of different people from TSD and the community.”

Volunteers from TSD, an Army group called Heroes Night Out, and Round Rock High School came together to provide students with an experience they won’t soon forget. Sponsors and partners of the Disability Awareness Fair included Sertoma, Teatro Vivo, the Vortex, HEB, and Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Teachers and other specialists (vision, speech, and OT/PT) who work with students with special needs led the various activities. Connie Potersnak, a teacher in the

Special Needs Department, hosted a booth where students could experience what it might be like for people with Autism when they are faced with a variety of stimuli. She commented, “The students showed up with a positive attitude, shared their experiences, and asked relevant questions.”

In retrospect, Debbie Andries, a TSD Curriculum Specialist and volunteer at the event commented, “I was thrilled that so many students and staff took the time to attend the Fair and engage so deeply in each of the activities.  I truly felt that the intentions of the event were met--the students seemed to gain new awareness about a variety of disabilities while having fun doing so.”

Amy Johnson is a Senior at TSD. She attended the fair and shared, “Before experiencing what it is like to have a disability, what people envision life [as] is very limited, but after having the experience, what one envisions is something much bigger, [and they gain] a much better understanding of what it is like.”

This year, TSD has undergone a merger between the 18+ and the SND Transition Program; they are now combined as one in what is known as ACCESS, which stands for Adult Curriculum for Community Living, Employment, and Social Skills. Jan Reed-Anderson, the Principal of the Special Needs Program, came up with the idea for the Disability Awareness Fair in response to the merger and what she described as a “need to start training and providing an awareness of [various disabilities] in a positive light”. She also summed it up best when she explained, “We hope to continue our merging into other departments based on knowledge, understanding, acceptance, and support from staff and students alike.”

The academic bowl team has been busy all fall preparing for their regional competition to be held in Salt Lake City, UT from January 24-27, 2013. The team practices three times per week and has weekly videoconference matches as a part of the Western Academic Bowl League.

This year’s team members are: Trevor Anderson, Braden Hamaker, Amelia Hamilton, Reno Jannett, Jasi Kennedy, Trevor Klemp, Maggie Kopp, Niko Lutes-Stein, Alexandria Rutowski, and Amanda Wolf. The team has also been busy preparing and hosting fundraisers to help with their travel costs, team uniforms,

and practice materials. They held their first fundraiser Sunday November 12th at Texadelphia Moonlight in Austin. Lots of friends and family came out to eat lunch and support the team.

Our biggest fundraiser is our soup supper and silent auction, happening on Friday December 14 from 5:00-7:30pm at TSD’s cafeteria. We would love to have you all join us. The flyer below gives all the details. If you have questions or would like to donate something for our silent auction, please contact coach Michelle Halvorsen: [email protected] hope to see many of you on Friday December 14th!

It's time for the Scholastic Book Fair!  It will begin Monday, November 26 and run through Friday, December 7. Holiday shopping anyone?

Reading classes will come at their normally scheduled time.  If you do not have a scheduled time, please contact me and schedule to bring your reading class.  Due to the unusual time constraints I have, classes will not be able to attend twice before it is over.  I will definitely have several  days with after school hours for students and staff to drop by to purchase.  Teachers can also contact me if students have brought

money and want to purchase books during school hours. As usual, there will be something great for everyone.  Holidays are on the way, and hopefully some free time for reading a good book!   Scholastic has promised a variety of items on many different levels.  Checks, credit cards, and cash will be accepted.   Please keep in mind that this event offers our library 25% profit from our sales, and 10% to choose from the shelves.

I'm  looking forward to seeing you all!
