Page 11: Galion Board of Education Presentation

Howard & Merriam, Columbus

The building is one of only a handful of structures in Galion known to have been designed by an established, urban architectural firm

The Galion High School building is the only known grade-level academic building ever designed by the firm

Architecture

Neoclassical styleThe exterior of the building is richly decorated with Adamsesque swags, oval cartouche, and a pediment featuring paired winged griffins or lions facing an urn.

Vision

Page 15: Galion Board of Education Presentation

¼ of all meetings held in conference facilities have less than 100 attendees

Another ¼ have between 101 and 200 attendees

78% of all off-premise meeting and conferences are for corporate purposes

Smaller conference centers have been successful in targeting the “SMERF” market-social, military, education, religious, and fraternal organizations

Galion Conference & Training Facility

“a mandatory need”

“absolutely needed”

“definitely, we have nowhere to meet”

“we need a hotel and a training facility”

“the highest priority for this area”

“it’s high on the list, for certain”

“we don’t have a central gathering place for 500-1,000”

“our organization would use it on a regular basis for training”

Galion Conference & Training Facility

Vision from study from Galionite Susan Vandermaas:

•Conference Center with Auditorium

•Completely wired for Internet access

•Multiple computers for training sessions and remote education lectures

•Banquet facilities for over 500 people

•Other stakeholders stated they would like to see more arts and cultural uses in Galion

Galion Conference & Training Facility

Stakeholders are nearly unanimous in prioritizing the need for a conference or “events” center in Galion that could serve the larger region. The meeting conference industry is growing long term and meeting planners are looking for closer, cheaper locations for smaller group meetings than in the past. The Mansfield/Galion market lacks large, modern meeting facilities, especially those with state-of-the-art technological capabilities. A medium size conference center that targets corporate meetings and training sessions, remote learning, weddings, anniversaries and reunions, government and non-profit association meetings, and ‘SMERF’ markets should be successful. An event center would serve a civic function in bringing visitors from all over the state and beyond to Galion. Done right, the event center could be the crown jewel of the Tri-County region.
