Transcript July 8 and 9, 2017 Galatians: Live Free | A Promise, the Law, and a Rescue Jake Barker | Galatians 3 Now before we dive into the sermon I want to celebrate something that happened last weekend. Last weekend was the first weekend of July, and every month on the first weekend we have baptisms. And baptism for us is our outward expression that we received the gift of grace and we’re going all in for Jesus—that we’re no longer living for ourselves, but we’re going to be living for God. Last week we opened it up for anyone to respond. Across three campuses and nine services we had 50 people go all in for baptism. That’s amazing—so, so, cool. And if that’s you, we celebrate with you and we want to be alongside you as you begin your journey with Jesus. That is the first step of so many, and we could not be more enthusiastic with having your back and seeing you grow in your faith. Over the last couple of weeks and over the weeks to come we are in a series called Live Free. We started a couple of weeks ago when we introduced the idea that freedom ought to be one of the primary descriptors of Christianity. Contrary to popular belief, and maybe contrary to the overall perception of Christians in the world, freedom is supposed to be one of the hallmarks of the faith—freedom from an old way of thinking, an old way of living, and an old way of understanding God. In order to really dive into that idea, we’ve been studying our way through a book of the Bible called Galatians. We’ve taken one chapter a week and asked the questions: What does this teach us about God? How should it change the way we live? In week one, our campus pastors rolled out to us that there were some people in this church in Galatia, a town called Galatia, who bought into some fake news. They bought into the idea that the good news wasn’t enough, that Jesus wasn’t enough, and they needed to add religious ritual on top of their faith in Jesus to really be loved. But we found out it’s actually Jesus plus nothing equals everything. And then last week we learned that, as Christians, we are free from the chains of hypocrisy and legalism. We can be confident in our salvation and patient with our growth as we become the men and women God intended us to be. So if you missed those previous weeks, I encourage you to go online, or into our church App and catch up. But today we’re going to dig into the next chapter. So if you have a Bible or a Bible App, I’d love for you to join me in Galatians 3. That’s where we’re going to be hanging out today. If you don’t have a Bible, it’s no sweat. The verses will be on the screen next to me.
