As spring approaches, thoughtsturn to festivals, parades andmarkets. March brings out theIrish in everyone with thepopular St. Patrick’s Day Paradeat Washingtonian Center. Celticdancers, bagpipe bands, firetrucks, and more delight thou-sands who don their green forthis family event. Four-leggedfamily members get their ownspecial daywith the annual Pawsin the ParkDogWalk and Festivaleach April, a fun-filled afternoonthat features walks, games and a“flea-less”market.

Spring also marks the arrival ofone of the City’s fastest growingevents, the Gaithersburg BookFestival. Literary enthusiasts fillthe grounds of City Hall in May,meandering from tent to tent enjoyingreadings and presentations, live music,and meet & greets with their favoriteauthors during this annual celebrationofthe writtenword.

As the weather warms, outdoormarketspop up across the City with healthy,fresh produce, local crafts and hand-made items, flea market bargains, and

more. The Main Street Farmers’Market intheKentlandsfeatureslocal artisans and handcrafteditems amongst its offerings offresh grown veggies and fruits,herbs,bakedgoods,meats, jams,and jellies. At the Fulks CornerFarmers’Market, located inOldeTowne, you’ll find deliciousspecialty items like cider, fruitbutters and applesauce, alongwith theproduce.

Once a month from May toOctober, the City Hall parkinglot turns into a lively streetbazaar with the Olde TowneMarket, where you can shop,eat, and bargain hunt to yourheart’s content. Unique shop-ping opportunities don’t endthere. You’ll find great deals ongently-used and new baby andhousehold items at the City’sBabyBazaars and FleaMarkets,taking place at the Mont-gomery County AgriculturalCenter, outdoors during theseasonal months and indoorswhen the weather turns colder.

Music fills the air with the arrival ofsummer as the City Hall ConcertPavilion comes to life with the Gaithers-burg Outdoors entertainment series.Experience uplifting gospel music withchoirs, choruses, dancers, and singers atJubilation Day in June. TThroughout its history the City and its leaders have helddear the notion that a healthy community must respect andprotect the environment. Not only is there a lot of openspace and parkland in Gaithersburg, through policy,regulation, education, and creative partnership, the City hasadopted a number of initiatives designed to ensure theprotection of our community for future generations.

• The City has enacted rigorous green building requirementsfor both residential and commercial development.

• Gaithersburg offers single stream recycling, whicheliminates the need for residents to separate materials,making recycling easy and efficient. Both 18 gallon bins and65 gallon wheeled recycling carts are available to residents.

• Rainscapes Rewards provide residents with educationalresources and financial incentives for natural drainageprojects, including the use of rain barrels and conservationlandscaping techniques.

• In partnership with the Izaak Walton League, we piloted aprogram to eradicate invasive plants by using herds ofhungry, grazing goats.

• The City’s trucks, buses and other heavy equipment usebiodiesel fuel, primarily made up of soybean oil.

• Gaithersburgmonitorsandmaintainsover24milesofstreamsand more than 400 stormwater management facilities. Wework in partnership with others to implement streamrestoration and stormwatermanagement retrofit projects.

One of the things that makes Gaithersburgsuch a highly livable community is the varietyof housing options. You’ll find historic singlefamily homes built before the turn of the 20thcentury alongside brand new apartments andtownhouses with urban amenities andeverything inbetween. Andwith somuchnewdevelopment now underway, thousands of

Construction of the in-frastructure for roadwaysand utilities for the first two

of six neighborhoods at Crown, just off ofI-370, is nearing completion. Buildings willstart goingup soon. LLook on a map of Mont-gomery County and you’ll findGaithersburg pretty close tothemiddle. Long thought of asan “upcounty” community, itno longer feels that way withthe advent of so much de-velopment between Gaithers-burg and Frederick. As thecrow flies, it’s just 13 milesfrom Gaithersburg to north-west DC.

But sincewe’renot crows,we’vegot to navigate the met-ropolitan traffic scene some-how. Live, work and play righthere in Gaithersburg and allyour trafficwoeswill disappear.If that’s not an option, there areplenty ofways to getwhere youneed to go.

are the norm during weekday kid’sperformances. As dusk approaches, grab ablanket and some popcorn as the Citybrings family-favorite movies outdoorsand under the stars to local neighborhoodparks. Weekend evenings beckon withtribute bands and Family Fun Nights, agreat way to wind down the work week.

A tradition since 1938, summer un-officially comes to a close with the annualLabor Day Parade. Marching bands, cos-tumedcharacters, fire engines, clowns, andmore wind their way through Olde Towneas young and young at heart come out forthis quintessential community event.

Nothing says fall like a festival. For over 30years, residents and visitors have cometogether for the annual CelebrateGaithers-burg in Olde Towne street festival. Withheadlining music acts, delicious food, arts,and amusements it’s nowonder thousandsjoin in every year to celebrate all that isgreat about Gaithersburg. And the

festivities don’t end there.Authentic Bavarian food andbeer and the sounds of Germanmusic lure festival goers everyfall to Oktoberfest at the Kent-lands, which also featureshorse-drawn wagon rides,pumpkin painting and chil-dren’s activities.

As the air gets crisper and the trees getmore bare, the City gets brighter withthe annual Winter Lights Festival atSeneca Creek State Park, featuring over380 illuminated vignettes and 65animated displays. This 3.5 mile drive-through light show also invites visitorsto experience the lights during a 5KRun/Walk, a dog walk, and trolley ridesending in yummy s’more making. TheCity rings in the holiday season withJingle Jubilee, getting you into theholiday spirit with hot cocoa and sing-alongs while you witness a magical treelighting at City Hall.

ments and 18,000 square feet of retail space. The firstapartments will begin renting in the summer of 2012. At theintersection of Girard Street and Goshen Road you’ll find the300-unit Hidden Creek Apartment Homes, which will alsobegin leasing soon.

The Watkins Mill Town Center/Parklands development to thewest of I-270 is amulti-year project beingbuilt in phases. TheParklands project includes over 400 residential units in acombination of single-family detached homes, single-familyattached and two-over-two stacked townhouses, over 30% ofwhich are completed and occupied. The TownCenter portionof the project, with retail and commercial use,will come later.

Spectrum atWatkinsMill to the east of I-270 is envisioned as a40-acre mixed use urban village, combining restaurants,retail and commercial uses with lively public spaces and res-idential living, all with convenient access to transportation.Construction of the infrastructure is underway and thebuilder will soon be breaking ground for 224 apartment unitsand ground floor retail.

Also under construction is SummitHall Reserve. Backing up tothe wide open spaces of Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm,this complex, next to the recently built 315 multi-family unitproject, Highland Square, will feature a combination of 81townhomes and two-over-twos.

The stacked condominium townhouse phase of TheVistas atOrchard Ridge Drive is completed. The overall developmentincludes 13 single-family detached houses, 38 townhouses,and 32 multi-family condominium units. Six of the singlefamily units are completed and some of the townhouseshave begun.
