Gaining a Competitive Advantage Through TrainingLast month, the Harvard Business Review published an article entitled ‘Three rules for making a company truly great.’1 The rules, based on the results of a 44-year-long study of over 25,000 companies, are: 1. Better before cheaper 2. Revenue before cost 3. There are no other rules

Arguably, these rules are not that surprising as they are based on business fundamentals that we are all aware of. Unfortunately, they are also too often forgotten, as is the role of human resources in implementing them.

You could get 50% off trainingNZTE BUSINESS CAPABILITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMEDoes your business have 50 or less employees? You may qualify for vouchers to help pay for services such as training workshops, courses and coaching that build the management capabilities within your business.

New Zealand Trade Enterprise (NZTE) Capability Development Vouchers are only available through Regional Business Partners around New Zealand. To qualify, businesses must come under defined criteria.

What benefits do you get?A network of 14 Regional Business Partners work to support business growth and innovation in their regions. The partners work with local businesses and provide a range of advice and access to funding and support for assisting you to grow your business.

For further information, contact Craig Garner EMA Regional Partner Assessor: em: [email protected]| ph: (09) 367 0907

The value a firm places on human resources is significantly related to its probability of survival.2 This is not only due to the fact that there is a connection between human resources practices and employee turnover and productivity, but also that a high quality, highly motivated workforce creates a competitive advantage that competitors find difficult to replicate.3

The benefits of training your staff cannot be over-stated. In addition to the competitive advantage, it shows staff that they are valued, and the acquisition of new skills and knowledge through training can lead to improvements in productivity. However, to be effective, “training needs the full participation and commitment of staff at all levels.”4

One of the dangers leaders can face is an inability to keep learning.5 Robert Kaplan, Professor of Management Practice at Harvard University, explains that leaders have to work to overcome isolation and make a conscious effort to keep learning.6

EMA Tertiary courses are a great way of helping leaders succeed in this goal. In doing so, they will be in a better position to implement the above three rules and maintain their company’s competitive advantage.

I invite you to join us in building a prosperous future for New Zealand.

Warm regardsKevin Chambers

EMA Tailored Training delivers workshops fully customised to reflect your workplace... at your workplace.

Answer: Management!Big changes for health and safety in the workplace are on the horizon, which will be based on recommendations from the Independent Taskforce on Workplace Health and Safety that was established by the Minister of Labour in June 2012. This group was charged with assessing whether the workplace health and safety system in New Zealand is fit for purpose and to recommend practical strategies for reducing the rate of workplace fatalities and serious injuries.

In all likelihood …“The Taskforce’s recommendations will be structured to support the Government’s role in influencing the health and safety system. The Government can pull on three broad levers to influence the attitudes, understandings and behaviours of employers, workers and others in the system: Accountability, Motivating, and Knowledge.”

This means that management will be required to be more involved and held to a higher level of accountability.

Organisations will be more closely scrutinised, penalties will be increased, and businesses may be rewarded for better health and safety performance through a levy regime.

Is your organisation ready? Here is one practical step that you can take immediately.

MANAGING HEALTH & SAFETY RISKThis programme is for all managers, supervisors, and team leaders. It will be customized for your organization based on its policies and practices, and the participants’ level of knowledge of health and safety regulations. Included may be:
