Part A) Introduction and Appeal and Author Info

The Little Prince was written by Antoine de Saint Exupéry and published for the

first time in 1948 (our version of the book was published in 2000 in Orlando, Florida by

A Harvest Book Harcout Inc). Saint-Exupéry was born in Lyons in France, and died in

1944 in a plane crash. Since the first time he flew at the Ambérieu airfield, he became an

aviator. He learned to fly while serving in the military and flew several years for private

airlines. In 1928, he became the director of the remote Cap Juby in Rio de Oro, Sahara

where he developed his love for the desert. Before publishing The Little Prince, he wrote

Southern Mail and Wind, Sand and Stars1. However, Saint Exupéry’s The Little Prince

become a classic of French literature translated in more than 150 languages, and often

used in classes by teachers. The book presents universal themes, characters and symbols

which are easily understood by a great number of readers. Partly written during the

Second World War, The Little Prince is based on Saint Exupéry’s homesickness and

desire to return to France (his home)2. The book relates to Saint Exupéry’s life

experiences, and thoughts about love, compassion and human nature. For instance, the

desert and the little prince’s journey in The Little Prince are a major link as well to Saint

Expuéry’s plane crashes, one in the Libyan desert and one in Argentina, and his quest for

returning home either during World War II or his walk in the desert after his crash. “The

Little Prince was a boy without a planet; Saint Exupéry became a man without a country.

Like the Prince, the author longed to return to his homeland-France.” 3

We decided to create a LES (learning and evaluation situation) with The Little

Prince because it is a classic of children’s literature. We found that the morals and values

conveyed are appealing to students. Moreover, we choose The Little Prince because it is a

book about life and human experience that can make the students reflect on their values,

experiences, and on the importance of certain things in their lives. We also found that the

book could influence the way young readers perceive life and certain morals.

In our opinion, The Little Prince is very touching, and the morals that are exposed

made us appreciate certain things in our lives just like the little prince values his rose.

Additionally, it made us look at things differently by using our imagination the same way

as a child would do in order to better appreciate what we see or encounter. Just like the

little prince finds out that his rose is the most important thing to him, we also learned to

focus on what is important in life for us, and appreciate the way it is by being responsible

and taking care of it. Moreover, the little prince’s pursuit of a goal and the motivation to

achieve the goal certainly influenced our way to pursue our own goals. From what we

experienced by reading The Little Prince, we found that the book was appropriate for

young adults because it would wake up the readers’ conscience about life values and

human reactions to life challenges in order to foster a stronger and better identity.

We believe that this book would please the students because it is about life

experience, the pursuit of happiness, the achievement of goals, the importance of setting

values in our lives and finding out what is really important (in our hearts). From this

point, the book can contribute to build students’ identity, and teach them friendship, love

    and humanity. (609 words)

Part B) Short Literary Analysis about the Book

The story is about a pilot who crashes in the Sahara desert. This pilot is also the

narrator. He meets a little boy who claims to be a prince from another planet. The little

prince tells the pilot about his planet, his adventures and his trips. Through the tales of his

new friend, the pilot reconnects with his imagination and learns to see the important

things, those that can only be seen with the heart. The pilot learns to see the world from a

child's perspective while the Little Prince learns about the importance and uniqueness of

what he left behind, his precious rose. He also learns to be responsible for the things he

    cares about.

Friendship is a recurrent theme in this story. The readers witness the growing

friendship between the Little Prince and the pilot, the Prince and his rose and the Prince

and the wolf. All the protagonists get something out of their friendships with one another.

The Little Prince learns to care and be responsible for the things he loves; the pilot learns

  • 3

to see things differently and gets his imagination back. The flower found someone to love

her in spite of her vain habits but mostly she learns that she may not be all that strong

after all. The fox gets tamed by the Little Prince and by doing so; he separates himself

from all the other wolves. All these relationships flourish through the story and get

stronger as the characters learn to care for the important things in life.

This story calls to the child in every grown-up. It is about the importance of

imagination and the need for grown-ups to see the world through children's eyes. The

author stresses the importance of not losing this naive view of the world as things are not

always as they seem. Grown-ups should remember to keep an open-mind, like children

do. The pilot used to be narrow-minded, but spending time with the Little Prince helped

him get rid of his grown-up ways. In this story, adults are seen as castrated since they

cannot imagine nor draw as children's imagination flourishes.

Many symbols are used to emphasize the moral of the story. First, the flower

represents the essential things that can only been seen with the heart. She represents what

is tamed and what should be cared for. The Little Prince represents the point of view of

children, full of imagination and curiosity. The pilot starts off as being a typical grown-

up, who conforms to society's conventions. In fact, he is the “product” of a world full of

adults: he has been deprived from his creativity and imagination. At the beginning, he is

only concerned about things of consequences but he grows to understand that there are

more important things that cannot be seen but with the heart. The fox represents wiseness

and cleverness. He knows the secret of life and teaches it to the Little Prince. The desert

is a symbol for challenging situation. It is in the desert that the pilot and his new friend

must face their destiny (Sherry, 2002). (535 words)

Part C) Four Activities and One Long-Term Project

All our activities are aimed for secondary four and five students from the ages of 15 to 17

attending to regular English as a second language course. We have four activities:

Morning Routines, Crossword, The Missing Sentence and The Perfect Planet, and one

long-term project named What is important?.

    Morning Routines

  • 4

Since the Little Prince has a planet to tend to, he needs a meticulous morning

routine. As part of the Broad Areas of Learning, this activity teaches students the

importance of a morning routine. The health and well-being section of the Broad Areas of

Learning aim to “ensure that students adopt a self-monitoring procedure concerning the

development of good living habits related to health and well-being” (MELS 5). The

students are asked to answer questions about their morning activities to get them to

reflect on their routine. With these answers, students write a complete description of their

morning routine. Students will then be asked to share their routine in their teams of four.

This activity is related to the first and third competencies; to interact orally in English and

to write text. By doing this activity, students will become conscious of their morning

routine and might even find ways of being more efficient with their time, bringing them

to a healthier lifestyle. This activity is intended for secondary 4 and 5 students, from the

    ages of 15 to 17.

Morning Routines! Part 1: The Little Prince had a meticulous routine in the morning. On page 15, he explains:

“When you've finished washing and dressing each morning, you must tend your planet. You must be sure you pull up the baobabs regularly, as soon as you can tell them apart from the rose bushes, which they closely resemble when they're very young. It's very tedious work, but very easy.”

Just like the Little Prince, we all have a morning routine. Answer the questions below to help you discover your morning routine. Then, write a short paragraph using your answers. Question 1: At what time do you get up in the morning? ________________________________________________________________________

Question 2: What is the first thing you do when you get up? ________________________________________________________________________

Question 3: What is your beauty routine? (taking a shower, shaving, brushing your hair, putting on makeup, etc..) ________________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

Question 4: Do you have breakfast in the morning? What do you usually eat? ________________________________________________________________________

Question 5: At what time do you leave home for school? ________________________________________________________________________

Question 6: What mode of transportation to you take to get to school? ________________________________________________________________________

    Part 2:

Write a small paragraph (150 to 200 words) about your morning routine using the

answers above. Remember, these answers are just a guideline, if there are more things

you do in the morning, add them to your paragraph! Be prepared to share your answers

    in your team.

    Crossword

Students are asked to complete the crossword with terms taken from the Little

Prince. This activity will help them learn some essential vocabulary for the understanding

of the story. This activity is related to the second competency, to reinvest understanding

of oral or written texts. Upon the reading of the book, students should be familiar with the

definitions of these terms. Students will need to reinvest this vocabulary in other

activities such as the written production in the long term project and in the evaluation.

This activity is intended for secondary 4 and 5, ages from 15 to 17.

  • 8

    Missing Sentences

The activity Missing Sentences is a Jigsaw activity which aims to develop MELS

competency 1: “To Interact Orally in English”. Each student has a sheet with pictures and

sentences taken from The Little Prince book. The goal of the activity is that each student

describes a picture that is missing a sentence in order to get the sentence from his partner

and vice versa. For example, student A describes the picture under letter G. Student B

listens carefully to the description and finds the picture in order to tell back the sentence

that his partner is looking for. The objective of the activity is to have the student interact

in English, and at a certain point reinvest the vocabulary that they learned in the previous

activities. The activity also develops listening skills because each student has to

concentrate on their partner’s depiction to understand which picture is being described.

  • 9

The Missing Sentences Part 1 For the first part of the activity, you will have to find out what are the

missing sentences under certain pictures on your sheet. Each student has to

follow the steps below to find the missing sentences.

    Steps:

    1. Describe orally the picture with the missing sentence to

your partner. You can use the following examples of

sentences to help you describe your picture.

    “In my picture, there is...”

“We can see… in my picture.”

    2. Write down the correct sentence that goes under the

picture that you described to your partner.

DO NOT copy the sentences. Describe your pictures orally, and

listen to your partner in order to write the sentences down.

    Part 2

With your partner, discuss the order of the images. Put the images and

    sentences in the chronological order.

“You are a funny creature, no thicker than a finger.”

I showed to the grown-ups my masterpiece, and I asked them if my drawing scared them. They answered, “Why be scared of a hat?”

My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. Then I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so the grown-ups could understand.

“Where are the people?” The little prince finally resumed the conversation. “It’s a little lonely in the desert…”

If you come at four in the afternoon, I’ll begin to be happy by three.

What a peculiar planet! It’s all dry and sharp and hard.

A geographer is too important to go wandering about. He never leaves his study. But he receives the explorers there. He questions them, and he writes down what they remember.

He carefully raked out his active volcanoes.

The second planet was inhabited by a very vain man. “Ah! A visit from an admirer!” he exclaimed…

And he felt very unhappy. His flower told him she was the only one of her kind in the whole universe. And here were five thousand of them, all just alike, in just one garden!

And he sat down because he was frightened.

Here is the best portrait I manage to make of him, later on.

    The Perfect Planet

The Perfect Planet activity intends to develop students’ writing skills and the

competencies 2 (to reinvest understanding of texts), and 3 (to write and produce texts) of

the MELS program. Students have to create a planet that they would own just like the

Little Prince owns his planet. Students also have to compare their planet to the Little

Prince’s planet at least 2 times which develops their reinvestment of what they learned in

the book. In addition, they have to use modals which use is also a reinvestment because

they will have done a grammar activity on modals. The activity is also intended to

prepare the students for the final project which consists of a written production.

  • 19

The Perfect Planet In a short text (150 words), describe what the perfect planet be would to you. Like in

“The Little Prince”, talk about the most important things that your planet would have.

Talk about three things that you would own, and what you could do on your planet. Be

imaginative, and create a planet that you would be proud of. Use modals. Make links

with the book, and compare at least 2 things about your planet with the Little Prince’s

    planet.

Example: Unlike the Little Prince’s planet, my perfect planet would have only one

    tree.

    Long-Term Project

This is a written and oral production about the students' most important things.

Each student will find what is most important to them, just like the Little Prince finds that

the flower is his most important thing, and write a text about it. Then, they will share with

the class, in an informal manner, what they came up with as their most important thing.

The goal is for the students to reinvest the life lesson included in the Little Prince. This

activity is intended for secondary four level students.

As a pre-activity (10 minutes), students will re-read the part that explains the

importance of the flower in the eyes of the little prince. They will find this passage on

page 63. Then, they will reflect individually and write down a list of what is important in

their life. From this list, they will decide which of all these items has primary importance.

Next, they start writing a draft. This part should last about 45 minutes. They

should aim for a 250 to 350 word text. The last 20 minutes are used to correct and spell

proof their text. In the next period, give the students 40 minutes for the final correction

and the final text. For the remaining time, ask each student to share what they came up

with: “What is your most important thing?” “Why is it so important?” “Since when has it

been your most important thing?”. This is an informal sharing of information so that

    students learn about each other.

like you. But my rose, all on her own, is more important than all of you

together, since she’s the one I’ve watered. Since she’s the one I put

under glass. Since she’s the one I sheltered behind a screen. Since she’s

the one for whom I killed the caterpillars (except the two or three for

butterflies). Since she’s the one I listened to when she complained, or

when she boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing at all.

    Since she’s my rose. (63)”

Reflect on what is important to you. What is the most important thing
