I wrote the following article for the local newspaper in Shawnee, Oklahoma in February of 2008. I thought it fun and appropriate to share with you since we are in an elec-tion year. The article is gently edited for length, not content. By the way, we still have the vacuum cleaner. It runs great! I bought a new vacuum cleaner last week. You would be impressed by the amount of research I conducted before making my purchase. I checked with Consumer Reports as well as several websites that offer evaluations of different products to learn the strengths and weaknesses of the vari-ous brands, models and types of vacuum cleaners. Once I decided on the particular vacuum cleaner I was looking for, I went shopping online and on foot. I checked several stores and visited the major shopping websites and finally found the price I was looking for on the machine I wanted. My car-pet could not be happier. Do we put that kind of time and effort into researching the positions, beliefs and convictions of political candidates? I hope we do. My father was a staunch republican. Even Barry Goldwater was a little too liberal for my Dad. My parent’s political con-versations around our dinner table centered mainly on what a disaster LBJ was and what a swell guy Nixon was. When I came to Oklahoma and registered to vote they asked me whether I wanted to register as a republican or a democrat.

I never thought about that before. Nobody ever asked me. I had voted before, but I always voted for a candidate, never for a party. “What am I?” I wondered, “a republican or a democrat?” As I stood there filling out my voter registration papers I had to make a decision; would I take up the party of my father, or would I declare my independence and register as a democrat? I’ll never tell. What I will say is how important it is to take the time to re-search the views and records of each candidate so a truly informed decision can be made. This information is relative-ly easy to find and available from a variety of media. The wellbeing of our nation rests on a well-informed electorate. Some voters may be inclined to support or reject a candi-date based on the candidate’s race, gender or religion. Oth-ers may be tempted to simply adopt the politics of parents or other influential people. A better criterion, I think, for making a wise decision at the polls is to ask which candidate best represents my views and vision for the country, state, or city. Let me encourage you to do your homework whenever you vote. Good information empowers us to make good choic-es.

Dr. Bob Searl

Here we are in September already. I can't believe, once again, how quickly the year is flying by. All of our music programs are running well and we are beginning the prep-arations for Christmas! But before Christmas, we have the Memorial Concert for 9-11. The Sanctuary Choir, along with several other church choirs from the area, are work-ing to present Faure's Requiem on Sunday afternoon on September 11 at 3 pm. This is a free concert for our com-munity. An offering will be taken to help pay for the or-chestra and soloists. I hope you will share this information with the community. This is a wonderful way to get people who won't ever come to church to walk through our doors. We never know when they will find their way back. Please use this as a potential outreach to your neighbors and friends and family. The Holiday Schedule will be coming to you soon! You will want to place all the holiday dates on your calendar! Treasure Coast Community Singers is working on their first concert of the season. On October 8 and 9, 3pm, they will present a concert of songs from Broadway musicals! Tick-ets are available in the church office. They are $15 in ad-vance and $20 at the door. Thank you for supporting this choir and the community endeavors they make to bringing people to musical events in our church.

We never know what God will use as a point of entry into His world. Keep singing!
